Now by trying to keep to the topic has anyone on IIS used or using PixInsight LE? I know that this is older software but it might have some use......

Being inquisitive I have thought about venturing on a few reprocesses of some of my old data to see if I can reap new life into most of my images.

I like the fact that you can process out your light pollution gradients, as well as other tweaking.

Looking on their forum I see that there is an article from David Pretorius for planetary image processing!

Prickly (David) has been tinkering around with PixInsight LE, I'm sure he will be up for some processing discussion.

As for me, I've really only used the Dynamic Background Extraction feature in PixInsight to fix vignetting.

good to hear Michael, be god to see how things worked for you and how you found the programme

G'day David,

Well, Im certainly no processing expert but I am gradually (slowly) learning more about pixinsight LE. There are some useful functions. The other good one is the system for removing noise (SGBNR).

Ive worked through a couple of pixinsight tutorials which was good fun and seemed to work. Good for a rainly afternoon.

Its good to know whos using the software because every so often it would be good to ask how to do something. If there are others out there using the software it would be good to get together a list.

I've found you can adjust the histogram curves to keep the peaks approximately lined up (adjusting each curve individually). This seems to help with the colour balance but Im saying this just based on observation rather than from any particular knowledge this is the right thing to go.

Wavelets are good too but it is a challenge to keep the image looking sharpened but natural.

Always keen to hear of any new tricks. Please feel free to share any

Cheers
David

thanks for the reply David, I take it you are only using the LE version and not have pruchased the 1.4 version, though that HDR processign looks a very big carrot as to the deconvolution processing.

I am yet to have a go at processing, i have downloaded the tutorials and will print them out to read and slowly follow. I would love to have found those ellusive PixinsightLE video tutorials but i cannot find a copy of them anywhere.

I watched the presentation tutorial for HDR processing of a single M42 processed image. Man this software is extremely powerful, and the noise reduction facility is amazing. A lot to learn, very steep but I think once the processes are mastered the results will be amazing.

Oh dear i think Houghy your out to spend some more money. Is there anythin you dont own yet. But you are right this software is quiet amazing. I used to use the LE version to play around with deconvolution etc. But there tutorials are quiet good.

Fahim, LOL i don't own a whopping big observatory with a 20" RC on a paramount ME in the middle of nowhere yet:rofl:, but i am working on that in my dreams.

I think you are right in the sense that PixInsight LE leads you straight on to the full version because the LE version doesn't have all the nice HDR and noise processing stuff within it. What i think is that i am wandering the processing software land trying to find some package that is comfortable for me to use - i may be in the wilderness for a long time  . the big thing is that i don't own a big CCD, nor really have the time to use one, i am lucky to use the DSLR - and when i do i like to get the most out of it that i can, so photons are sacred  The thing that I have seen is that you can stack in DSS (free) process in PixInsight LE (free but limited by some functions that are not there) or Iris (free) and you can finish off in GIMP (free). Or you can go down the different path stack and process in ImagesPlus, and finalise in Photoshop CS4, or stack and process in Astroart and finalise in photoshop CS4, or use PixInsight to stack and process and touch up in photoshop CS4. Note that every single package gives you vastly differing results, and have very complex and different processing methods. nothing is simple if you want the result:help:, but i need to find something i will be happy with.:D the thing about PixInsight is that it is the same in Windows as it is in Linux or the Mac, the others are strictly one operating system. SO this could be a Ruddy Expense for nothing if i get it :whistle:
