Is it neccessary to stretch and colour-balance the subs BEFORE stacking or doy just stretch and balance the stacked image?:shrug:

Also, do you need to colour-balance the darks after converting from raw to colour and then setting up calibration?:shrug:

Stack the images first and don't convert darks to colour.

The numbers for the Converting to Color section can be gained by doing a G2V calibration. Google it.

Hi Robin,

MaxIm DL essentials,won't let me set up calibrate unless I have converted the raw darks to colour.

My camera is a one shot colour. The Orion Starshoot. I don't know why it only gives the option to take darks in black and white only.

My method.
1 combine at least 3 of your raw darks (median) do not convert to colour, use the result as your subtractable dark frame.
2. Take your light raw subs and do this to each in this order Subtract dark - convert raw to colour- make pixels square-colour balance.

3. Now stack all the colour subs.

If someone thinks this is wrong please let me know but it works fine for me.:thumbsup:

I can't subtract the dark until I have converted it to colour. MaxIm DL essentials won't let me.

Are you sure you have to colour convert?
All the calibration files should be applied in the raw file state.
I use maxim but not the version you have.

It doesn't make sense to me to colour convert. They are a register of false LIGHT, not false colour.

But for some reason, MaxIm DL essentials just will not let me combine images until the darks have been colour converted.

I feel like I am missing something somewhere.

I think I adress your situation below but i dont know if I have an answer

I usually follow this procedure with the same set up (ie DL Essentials) -

Capture lights (Light Raw 1x1) -> Capture darks (Dark Raw 1x1)-> Colour Convert Lights -> Colour Convert Darks -> Calibrate -> Stack

However I just tried some different procedures I think as you are questioning on some raw data from the weekend

I tried

Set up calibrate with dark raws (no colour) -> open light raw (no colour) -> calibrate -> colour convert -> stack

then

Set up calibrate with dark raws (no colour) -> open light raw (no colour) -> calibrate -> stack -> colour convert

and both worked - in fact i couldnt see the difference in the final product in all 3

I did have this problem early when I was imaging as light clour then darks in dark raw - that is why I colour convert the darks before calibration now even though I capture in light raw now.

As I said no answer mate but if what I have described above doesnt follow the process you are questioning let me know (in *** -> *** ->*** format) and I will see if it works on my set up.

On the original question. Definitely dont stretch and colour balance subs before stacking. The data rejection step needs normalised (equal brightness, probably an automatic step inside DL) unadjusted subs or it will screw up. CCD stack wont even try to do data reject unless the subs are fairly similar., its trying to eliminate not-common-to-all-subs noise, adjustment just adds unequal atificial noise.
