Hey Lismore Bloke,:)
THIS WEATHER @%^&^ SUCKS
Yes, I agree, I shall have a word with Dad (up there):D . I'll try to influence some fine, dry, still and clear nights out of him.:D;)
Can't promise anything. Dad meets with the weather gods today, should have an answer for you, tomorrow? :screwy: :screwy:.
Gotta go now, the nurse has summoned me to take my medication. I'm late.

Tut! Tut!
Such profanity. I am sure the weather in Lismore is good at some times of the year and you are so near the beach compared to Broken Hill. What we need is a register of country astronomers and coastal astronomers who would be prepared to exchange observatories for a few days a year.

Luxury, sheer luxury,
In my day we were so poor our boiled lollies were fryed, We used to live in carboard box in middle of road, and we only got one viewing night per year, on full moon, in a security lit underground car-park.
oh, hang-on, that's Brisbane I'm describing....

Don't worry, it'll clear up for the full moon.:(
You're not wrong there!!!
I've been living in Brisbane for just over a year and a half and I can honestly say I've not had one night of excellent seeing in that entire time. Not one. And only a few nights of fair to good seeing.
It's been dead-set crap! I never thought there'd be anything about Canberra I'd miss after the move...but I have to say I'd give anything for a few of those clear and crisp nights.
But at least it's raining again;)

Wouldn't mind some of your atmospheric moisture down here! I would even sacrifice some viewing nights for some real rain.

Hey Rider,:)
Luxury, sheer luxury,:lol::lol:
That was good. I agree with you.
----------------------------------------
Hey Matt,:)
I feel a little disillusioned by your statement. :( Is Brisbane that bad?
:newbie: I am out at Burpengary and hoping to experience some moderately dark skies come winter. :prey:I remember having seen the Milky Way some nights in the past. Pre scope days.
I'm inclined to sell all my gear and go fishing:mad2:
I saw sunshine for two and a half minutes this morning. So there's hope:lol:
I'll keep my scope. (Maybe just to harrass the Green Devil Woman)

strange, i guess its what your used to.
The amount of clear nights here, far outweighs the UK.
Well....it has been bad, Marty, in the short to medium-term past which is the only term of reference I have...but the good news is it can only improve and most certainly will. I'm sure it's all linked to the La Nina/ El Nino cycle. At the moment, we're getting a little reprieve from the dry. Swings and roundabouts, I guess.
Hang in there, mate. I am.:thumbsup:

I symphasise entirely with Lismore Bloke. The weather here has been sheer garbage, but it's not actually the weather that's causing most of the problems here, it's the freaking DSE (Defartment of Suckstainability and Enviroment) :mad2: A week ago, we had a string of clear nights right on new moon - ALL of them ruined by those stupid DSE burn offs :mad2:
Atm, I hate the DSE more than the weather. It seems like the only thing one can do is move to the middle of the desert to escape both the clouds AND the DSE.

Wow I got a mention.
Thx.
No sign of rain on the horizon ....sorry fella,s and gal,s.
But i can tell ya at least you can plan an observing night out here even if its cloudy through the day as they dissipate in the evening.
Good thing i,m not into astrophotography or everyone would get sick of my images being posted everyday.
Seriously tho hand in there clouds will go 1 day.
Cheers Kev.

Hi PGC Hunter. Difficult for us to say from up here, but doing burnoffs now seems like a sick joke in light of the recent bushfire tragedy. One hopes that sustained burns each season had been done to reduce forest fuel loads. The old Forestry Departments knew how to manage native forests better than the Enviro Nazis ... think back to what happened to Canberra and Mt Stromlo. A case of not learning the lessons of history.

And these burnoffs were done on the sunny 32 degree days last week, hence my annoyance. It never occured to them to do it on the cooler cloudy days, when according to logic and general common sense, it is MUCH SAFER!!! As soon as the heat and sun disappeared, so did all the burnoff smoke. Go figure!!! :screwy: Don't forget, this is the same mob that set Wilsons prom alight in 2005 when their burnoffs got out of control on a 34C day with 100km/h winds. I still remember the flak they got from the public, and rightly so. Apparently, common sense is not part of the DSE's toolkit. :screwy:

It's a pity, because the Environment Departments do a great job of conserving wildlife, habitats and biodiversity, BUT, as you rightly say, plain common sense dictates that in forest systems in a country like Australia, burning off SHOULD be done regularly, when conditions are safe. The wife and I have travelled and camped in the bush a lot and even our untrained eyes can see the danger building up.

Chillie, hope you get some rain very very soon.
We went through the same recently, the creek was just a string of puddles and our dam was dry. No water for livestock and only a couple of feet of water in the tanks for us. It's not good living on the edge.

We had a glorious clear evening just to tempt me into setting up. By 8pm it was foggy and no stars to see. I haven't had a clear night in 2 weeks but only 8mm total of rain. I would rather it rained properly or clear up.
Having said that my tanks are essentially full and there is plenty of water for the animals. Just crap for astronomy.

Hey jjj, :)
Now what did I say, the moon is getting full and sky is now crystal clear.
What sky were you looking at?
True the sky was a nice clear-ish pale blue this arvo. I didn't hope too confidently it would last.
As day turned to night the clouds dominated. And I may add with a bit of speed.
I noticed a good view of the moon almost full. Aah! I'll take a pix, dash it green in Photoshop, post it on IIS and blame it on that Green sprite.
I ran in picked up the picture maker and aimed at, at,... CLOUDS.
Rats, foiled again.

The north coast gets an amplified version of what others experiance to the north .. brisbane ..and to the south off coffs ..
Two days rain = Three days rain here.. this year like last seems fairly similar to last if you look at the whole cycle... I 'm seeing a lot of wet
weather springs starting to run again this year:(.. It would be great to send some of this water down south where its needed .

Just came in from a couple of hours outside with the 12" dob. Cursing the mozzies, cursing the clouds that materialised, then went, then came back.
Lots of moisture in the atmosphere, tube was quite wet. Viewfinder fogged up, telrad even worse. Both mirrors clear as a bell though. Seeing was damn good apart from that grizzle about fogging. How do you stop a telrad from fogging, apart from blasting it with a hair dryer, as some guys do????
Had some good views of a few favourites, Eta Car, Omega, 5128, blue planetary etc. Saturn was excellent. Even used the 9mm GSO Plossl in the 2x barlow, so can't complain about the seeing. Quite steady all things considered. I just wish the weather patterns would change and dry out. Like most amateur astro's in the eastern third of Oz, I am suffering from scope deprivation!!!

Tonight has been fantastic. Clear and dark with the best seeing we've had in many months.
It's been great to connect with the Universe once again.
Lismore Bloke
15-04-2009, 11:08 PM
Yes, jjj,I was surprised at how steady the atmosphere was, and how much magnification it would stand. Especially after the recent lousy weather. We spent Easter with family at Hervey Bay, fortunately missed the worst of that dumping rain coming back. Lots of flooded creeks and paddocks. Better make the most of the viewing while it lasts!!!. Cheers, Paul.

Hey all, :)
I missed the opportunity. I checked the sky early and saw thin cloud.
Too Hazy. Retired to rejuvenate the nerve endings begging for the red liquid.
Looked outside. Damn! Bu... r... It was clear. Not Fair.
Tonight I take Her ladyship out for dinner. Clear sky again.
Here's hoping.
I visited York Optical. I may have to confess. Have to go.

Fall out from the Dust storms from out west have arrived on the coast today  .... maybe some of the moisture in the air again tonight will settle things down .
Just had 264 mm rain over the Easter period, and a week of cloudy skies prior to that. Poked my head out a few minutes ago and saw something twinkling ....Gotta go, it looks like some stars are showing.
