Hey Lismore Bloke,

THIS WEATHER @%^&^ SUCKS

Yes, I agree, I shall have a word with Dad (up there) . I'll try to influence some fine, dry, still and clear nights out of him.

Can't promise anything. Dad meets with the weather gods today, should have an answer for you, tomorrow? .

Gotta go now, the nurse has summoned me to take my medication. I'm late.

Cheers Marty

Tut! Tut!

Such profanity. I am sure the weather in Lismore is good at some times of the year and you are so near the beach compared to Broken Hill. What we need is a register of country astronomers and coastal astronomers who would be prepared to exchange observatories for a few days a year.

In my day we were so poor our boiled lollies were fryed, We used to live in carboard box in middle of road, and we only got one viewing night per year, on full moon, in a security lit underground car-park.

Don't worry, it'll clear up for the full moon.

You're not wrong there!!!

I've been living in Brisbane for just over a year and a half and I can honestly say I've not had one night of excellent seeing in that entire time. Not one. And only a few nights of fair to good seeing.

It's been dead-set crap! I never thought there'd be anything about Canberra I'd miss after the move...but I have to say I'd give anything for a few of those clear and crisp nights.

But at least it's raining again

Wouldn't mind some of your atmospheric moisture down here! I would even sacrifice some viewing nights for some real rain.

Hey Rider,

Luxury, sheer luxury,

That was good. I agree with you.
----------------------------------------

Hey Matt,

I feel a little disillusioned by your statement. Is Brisbane that bad?
I am out at Burpengary and hoping to experience some moderately dark skies come winter. I remember having seen the Milky Way some nights in the past. Pre scope days.

I'm inclined to sell all my gear and go fishing

I saw sunshine for two and a half minutes this morning. So there's hope
I'll keep my scope. (Maybe just to harrass the Green Devil Woman)

Cheers Marty

The amount of clear nights here, far outweighs the UK.

Well....it has been bad, Marty, in the short to medium-term past which is the only term of reference I have...but the good news is it can only improve and most certainly will. I'm sure it's all linked to the La Nina/ El Nino cycle. At the moment, we're getting a little reprieve from the dry. Swings and roundabouts, I guess.

Hang in there, mate. I am.

I symphasise entirely with Lismore Bloke. The weather here has been sheer garbage, but it's not actually the weather that's causing most of the problems here, it's the freaking DSE (Defartment of Suckstainability and Enviroment) A week ago, we had a string of clear nights right on new moon - ALL of them ruined by those stupid DSE burn offs

Atm, I hate the DSE more than the weather. It seems like the only thing one can do is move to the middle of the desert to escape both the clouds AND the DSE.

Wow I got a mention.

Thx.

No sign of rain on the horizon ....sorry fella,s and gal,s.

But i can tell ya at least you can plan an observing night out here even if its cloudy through the day as they dissipate in the evening.

Good thing i,m not into astrophotography or everyone would get sick of my images being posted everyday.

Seriously tho hand in there clouds will go 1 day.

Cheers Kev.

Burnoffs

Hi PGC Hunter. Difficult for us to say from up here, but doing burnoffs now seems like a sick joke in light of the recent bushfire tragedy. One hopes that sustained burns each season had been done to reduce forest fuel loads. The old Forestry Departments knew how to manage native forests better than the Enviro Nazis ... think back to what happened to Canberra and Mt Stromlo. A case of not learning the lessons of history.

And these burnoffs were done on the sunny 32 degree days last week, hence my annoyance. It never occured to them to do it on the cooler cloudy days, when according to logic and general common sense, it is MUCH SAFER!!! As soon as the heat and sun disappeared, so did all the burnoff smoke. Go figure!!! Don't forget, this is the same mob that set Wilsons prom alight in 2005 when their burnoffs got out of control on a 34C day with 100km/h winds. I still remember the flak they got from the public, and rightly so. Apparently, common sense is not part of the DSE's toolkit.

It's a pity, because the Environment Departments do a great job of conserving wildlife, habitats and biodiversity, BUT, as you rightly say, plain common sense dictates that in forest systems in a country like Australia, burning off SHOULD be done regularly, when conditions are safe. The wife and I have travelled and camped in the bush a lot and even our untrained eyes can see the danger building up.

Come and live on the west coast! We've had so much fine weather we're exhausted and begging for rain. Not one of our events have been cancelled this year. Thank goodness its easter and full moon so we can have a break!

Absolutely, the skies are crystal clear here. Now if I can find the launch key for the missile to blow up the moon all will be well .

I second that statement. Our water supplies are currently at 3.8%.
