Agh! Adobe, yuk!

Do yourself a favour and get foxit reader. Its a free pdf viewer thats lightweight, wont bog down your pc or nag you to download humongous updates every week.

What browser Anth? IE , Firefox?
You can reset your IE settings
http://www.windowsreference.com/internet-explorer/how-to-reset-internet-explorer-settings/

Or on the pdf right click, save target as, then if saved to the desktop, Right click, Open With: select Adobe Reader.

If you dont see it as an option to open the pdf with, you can browse to the program,

usually

c:\program files\adobe\reader\ or similar.

I agree with Starkler (Geoff), get Foxit. Its about 20 meg smaller, and much faster.

Geoff, I just made that horrendous mistake last night.
At 4am I wanted to read a PDF help file on the observatory PC
only to find I had no Acrobat on there .
The PC inside has all of those apps, dome PC is bare bones.

So I downloaded Adobe reader on broadband from the dome
and it was something like 50Mb, started extracting halfway through
the download. Took about an hour and a half before anything looked
like installing.
Then to find it decided to autoupdate itself, mess with your startup
registry and install all sorts of other garbageware without asking you.

Just to read a PDF!
Never again.
Thanks for the tip, I'll try your suggestion.

Yep Steve I got frustrated by how bloated and annoying adobe became just to do a simple job of viewing a PDF. If a piece of software becomes too offensive, someone will write a cut down alternative.

I got similarly jacked off with Real Player and lo and behold, a few minutes googling found a lightweight free alternative :)
