software to show saturn's moon positions?

Did some actual observing the other night. I've been so focused on imaging I haven't taken the time to smell the roses so to speak. Surprised to find that with my ED100 and a 4.5mm eyepiece I could clearly see Saturn's rings and I'm sure some moons, and some more with averted vision I've heard about. So I made a quick sketch of what I think I saw and the time/date, and now want to check to see if the moons were indeed in those locations.

So what would you use to check that?

Stellarium (http://www.stellarium.org/)will give you the answer, and it's free.

Just remember that you might have to flip the view on screen left/right and up/down to see what you are seeing through en eyepiece? Sorry, I cannot remember with a refractor but you'll work it out, I'm sure. :thumbsup:

Also don't forget to compensate for light speed
flag_light_travel_time = true
in the config.ini
otherwise you will see them as they are, not as they are seen some hour and a bit later from Earth

My sketching isn't /that/ accurate ;)

Just checked in Stellarium. What I saw and sketched was Saturn (obviously), Titan, Rhea, and Tethys. Cool.

I have a script for v0.10.1 showing Saturn and some moons.
It is a project for IYA 09 so I may need to code some amendments to suit your location and time frame.
It is available if you cam pm me. Sorry, I don't think I can attach a file with a .ssc extension to this thread.

I am all fingers and thumbs with anything but "cut and paste" stuff.
We solved the attachment problem by exchanging emails. I can handle that but that's about the limit.
I might have to learn to zip as I would like to code some more Stellarium v0.10.1 scripts (extension .ssc) and make them available to others on IIS who might be interested. Stellarium is still under development so it is one step at a time.

Ooo.. Gives you a chance to use JustZipIt in reverse.

SkyviewCafe(dot)com has an online app that has a Jupiter & Saturn moons feature.. you can change the time represented in increments from minute by minute through to year by year, and observe the relative motions of the moons through time.. all as appears at your location, (long'&lat' set by you).
