 The weather gods have done it again, lol...Normally I will step outside & see if it's worth setting up a scope or 2 just before dusk, which I did tonight..Yuk! wind blowing with nice cloud cover & rain imminent! Stepped outside just now & it's perfectly clear, no wind with good seeing conditions!!  Of course, I've been here before......Just as your finishing setting up, in comes the clouds again. I think it's another trick just to see me frantically setup..;) I'm not fallin' for it! hear me weather gods?? :P (quite often I'll tell them I won't bother setting up....but when their not looking...I will, just to fool them! hehehe! SHHH!):D

Yeah...That's another thing...It takes 4 hrs min for the newt to cool before I'll even bother to put eye to EP...I might just sneak the refractor out...I'm not going to use it of course!? I'll just set it up & look at it!

Mate you've got to look at fans for cool down! 4 hours wait is just to long to wait , but then again good reason to use an 80ED while you wait .

great pieces of glass though, have you tried throwing water on them to cool em down or do they keep trying to hump the scope?

That IS with a fan Louie! a 6" pedestial fan blowing on the back..I think I need a web-back mirror, not a full thickness one.

You know whats worse than setting up for nothing?
Forgoing a dark sky trip because your fears about the weather were wrong and you hear about what a great night you missed :(

yup me parkes scopes are pretty tough, but intelligent, bred em with a dingo under a full moon and as such, they get a bit crazy for the next 7 days

Turn it on!? Hmmm that's an option! I never thought of that! I was wondering what that button that said on/off was for?

4 hours!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I turn my little fan on and in 5 minutes it's ready! Mine is the one that come with the scope. It is just a computer fan fitted to the back end but boy it works great.
DOB: Definately Optically Brilliant

no no no no no.
buy a new fan, take out the blades, put the mice in and get them to run around the cage, their little tails wagging will create an air flow!

remember, like a woman, it is a thing of building passions, not a 5 minute quickie!
the subtle interplay of adjusting air temps, the anticipation of what you will see. the riding of the highs and lows. those cloudy interuptions, or even the lightning strikes, but at the end of 4 hours of ****** hard concentration, the end result is worth it.
...and then you get married and all it ever is are 5 minute quickies.
at least your parkes mirrors appreciate your fine, delicate & patient ministrations to control her temperatures!

It's very simple really: buy 2 thermometers, 1 outside, 1 on the mirror. Bang OTA in airconditioned room, turn aircon on. Get both thermometers reading the same, put OTA on mount. Turn mounted fan on & LEAVE on all night.
