Has anyone used a USB/Serial converter with the EQ5 Synscan controller ?
At present using 2 laptops, one with a serial port for guiding and the other (with no port) for imaging. The old Dell is needed elsewhere and I was thinking of using the one machine for both applications.

Cheers

It shouldn't be a problem. However you may find you get noise problems in your imagers with your your laptop don't both. Some people do and some don't.

On the EQ6 which I think is the same hand controller use a Aten brand (cheap as well) converter . Don't use the Belkin one (it has a slightly different chipset), it won't work with the controller.

I use an ACER with KEYSPAN USB>Serial adaptor ( the best!!), controls my LX200, HEQ5Pro and allows TheSky, CdC, AstroPlanner etc etc to be used.
Over the last couple of years I've had zero problems.
The KeySpan is the way to go!!!!!!!

Thanks for the advice gents. Have a converter on order and should get it next week. I did manage to repair the damaged lappy, but in the interest of power saving/less cables will still try the single one with converter.
