What's the grey and orange wires for?

What are those conductors connected to in the fluoro fixture, that's the key question.

Best guess at this point is that they are extra conductors provided for two-way switching, or maybe a separate ballast.

I have wired up dozens of lights and power points in the past. Only ever had two to three wires though. Want to know what these extra one are. Can I leave them out and just wire up the three as usual?

Baz i am a sparky. Check in the light if they are not connected to anything just cut then off.

Hi Baz,
I'm an electrician too.
It's possibly a 'maintained' fluoro fitting, they use these as emergency lights
and it's possibly got a battery pack and second tube and some electronics inside.
If that's the case, as Phil said, make sure you know what is inside, never
assume anything.
The extra connections are probably a second 'maintained' active and
test wires.
Just because you've wired up dozens of lights and power points doesn't
make you a qualified electrician...be careful!!
If in doubt, ask one! :)

Thank you Steve. Good advice.
That's exactly why I am online asking. I am humble enough to realise that I am not an expert at anything, however, having some common sense I know enough to protect myself and attemt these things in a safe and logical manner.

I am merely trying to get a feel for what these two wires may be before I go ripping apart a beautiful pair of lights. In many cases, these things can be simple and someone with the "right" knowledge, like a qualified sparky, may be able to give me a simple answer.

If, per se, the thing turns out to be too complicated or dangerous, then I will just get a sparky to do it.

I am always one to learn things and give them a go though. If I wasnt, I wouldnt have built an observatory on my own, learned to take astrophotos on my own etc

Well, I pulled it all apart and found out for myself.

It turns out there is a unit inside that can do all kinds of things like dimming, auto shut down, make coffee, etc. with full explanations printed on it.

All I had to do was NOT connect the grey and orange wires. I connected the three as per normal, threw the switch (with breaker fuse in mind) and all is good as expected.
