A question or two on Vista.

First let me start by stating that I hate Vista, from my perspective it's the most bug ridden and inefficient piece of crap Microsoft have had the nerve to serve up, right up there with Win ME.

:tasdevis: ........Now that I've vented..... I need to get more exposure to Vista as I'm more frequently running in to issues involving the OS in my day to day work. I find that I'm simply wasting too much time finding my way around sorting out bugs and discovering the intracacies of Vista.

I plan to install Vista Ultimate 64 Bit on a new PC I put together a few months ago (it's up to the task).

Will standard 32 bit apps run OK (office etc) and partcularly CS3.

Will 32 bit CS3 utilise the additional Ram that 64 Bit Vista can address.

Are there any other gotcha's that I should know about.

My understanding is that 32 bit apps will run but they won't utilise the additional RAM mapping, as far as I know Phil.

I've see Maxim using 6gig at times on this 64bit vista box. It used to cark it on 32 bit machines with insufficient ram.

As an old programmer, what I understand is the software requests ram from the O/S and the O/S manages the memory.

Since posting I've done some googling and that seems to be the case even with photoshop, apparently it's also necessary to register a couple of the 32 bit DLL's that PS uses.

I have CS3 running fine on Vista 64 + 8gb of ram, Photoshop regularly uses more than the 3.5gb a 32bit O/S would map.. Sometimes upwards of 6~7 depending on what i've got it doing... (LR deconvolution on 2x 100mb+ Tiff's at the same time)

I've never knowingly registered any dll's to get PS to go.
PS rockets under vista 64 on a quad core with a fist full of ram :)

Thanks for the info now it looks like the most difficult part will be finding a copy of Ultimate 64 bit at a good price.

Pity you have to go that way acropolite...

I know someone who works in a wholesale business bringing in windows products along with other things and they tried to order vista to restock and microsoft informed them, it is no longer available..to be replace by something else, now the big question is, is it xp with some improvements or are they going to stop new sales till 7 arrives...
I have no idea but was shocked to hear that they couldnt get copies anymore, I was told they only have about 3 months stock left...

maybe you might find that you have to learn another os real soon...:rofl:

XP is set to stop in August next year.

Phil, you may want to check Officeworks. Not sure whether they have 64bit version of Ultimate but they sell Ultimate boxes. I was surprised by their price on Premium to Ultimate upgrade. It seems that not many sell this upgrade in Australia. Before I checked Officeworks the best price I could find was $230. However oficeworks sells them for $189.
