I wasn't even aware this had been released.

How did I manage to miss all the release fanfare and hoopla?

Got it on my desk Matt. Still have to get around to installing it on my newly-bought 64-bit Quad-core machine. Should be noice!

Is it still 32bit software or is this the 64bit version?

CS4 is available (at least on Vista and XP) in a native 64 bit version. The only watchout is that any plugins you use may not be until their developers catch up.

I can't wait to have 64-bit versions of Photoshop and LightRoom running on my machine which has 8Gb of RAM to muck with and Vista Ultimate 64. Even though I haven't loaded CS4 yet, every other app that I have running concurrently doesn't seem to undertand that other apps are running at the same time - there's just no lag time in anything... snap, snap, snap!

That's a nice set-up you got there, Chris. Drool!!!!!!!!!!

Cheap as chips Matt. Seriously!

The "barebones" system I bought from a little guy in Crows Nest was only $1,497.00 - plus a bit more for the extra 4Gb of RAM. All up - including a 750GB disk and an OEM copy of Vista Ultimate 64. Not bad. THe Q9550 QuadCore is amazing. At 2.88GHz it isn't the fastest available (3GHz) - but were talking symantics at that stage.

Yeah. It's pretty amazing what you can get these days without spending tons of cash.

Who would have thought we'd reach the stage where 2 or 3GB of RAM, a 250 or 320GB HDD, 15.4" hi-res LCD screen, and all the other bells and buzzers would be considered 'standard' in a laptop! And all for $1000...or thereabouts.:)

i've got the Q9550 also but with 4gb of ddr3.
the Q9550 is a great overclocker too, im running mine at 3.6ghz

i might have to check out the x64 version of CS4

Does CS4 support GPGPU load balancing (I think its just 2D canvas rotate functions - not even Pixel Blender made it in - but may be added in the not too distant future)? Having 384 stream processors per each modern GPU process data fed from a single or dual CPU Quad core system would be very nice - that would give around a 35x speed up by my rough calculations (better still if you had 2 -> 4 Big GPUs) - then even your most complex manupulations - taking minutes now - would be real time, sub second rendering)!

Yes. It was my first personal computer too.

Came with 1kb RAM as standard...but you could splash out for a 16kb plug-in unit which was larger than a cigarette pack!

What a blast from the past. And it worked on BASIC.

It was really satisfying when my 8Gb system "came alive" after I sourced then assembled the parts, then hit the "on" button and began loading V 64 ultimate. Ive got CS3, and it starts almost instantly. Pity CS4 is so expensive, $999 USD, which at the AUD could almost see it cost more then my PC!

Yes 8GB ram with Vista rocks, you cant kill it or even slow it down :)

Yep - and that's just for the upgrade. The premium production suite here in Oz is nearly AU$2,800, and the whole shebang "Master Collection" is AU$4,100

To be fair, the thread is entitled "Photoshop CS4", which on its own (without the rest of the standard suite) is around the AU$1,150 mark, or AU$299 for the upgrade.

I agree that Vista 64 screams on a decent machine. Everything I do on mine is now almost instant. I've never seen Photoshop or Lightroom (22,000 images) fire up in two seconds from start before.

If Paint Shop Pro does the job and you're happy, then that's all that counts.
I sometimes use PSP7 to do simple stuff, some of it's features are easier to use than PS and I love Animation Shop.

Can't wait to try CS4, I use CS3 but for some quick work I go into CS2 instead.

Uhmm... nope David! :) In the advertising/graphics trade I know of, well, there are no installations of PaintShop that I can put a finger on - except maybe a couple here and there which are used for conversion of PSP native files that come in on occasion to Photoshop. As Andrew says though - if it works for you and you're used to it then there's probably little need to go to full-hog Photoshop.

Hey, all!

I belive a few of you may be using CS4 now so wonder what your thoughts are compared to CS3?

I am interested about its use for Astro work (when compared to CS3) but welcome thoughts on general use.

I have CS3 Extended Student Edition and was considering upgrading to CS4 Extended, again at Student prices.

cheers,
