DSLR's and Vista Focusing/Processing Software

Appears to be many threads on DSLR Software and VISTA and not many answers.

I tried MaxDSLR on VISTA and had no luck, the program loaded and worked, but I got errors everytime I tried to take an exposure.

Has anyone been successful with VISTA, and how did you get it working?

Im thinking of loading VMBox and loading XP as a last minute measure.

I guess the response just about sums it up Leinad. You could try the free Focusassist (http://www.xmission.com/~jstanley/focusassist/), but no guarantees and maybe some of the software from Stark Labs (http://www.stark-labs.com/) might work. I don't think (but can't swear as I wouldn't have Vista if it was given to me for astro apps) DSLR Focus (http://www.dslrfocus.com/) will work with Vista either.

You might want to have a look at Nebulosity 2 from Stark Labs, it is Vista compatable:

Good simple to use software, cheap and interfaces with PHD Guiding (free) from the same author.

Well personally, I use XP for all my stuff but I have just spent the last 3 nights watching a laptop with Nebulosity 2 and Vista working perfectly taking astro shots.......

Go figure :shrug:

OK John, lucky you. But I dont get why anyone would just bother at all with Vista. XP is just so easy, standard, no hassle. Not wishing to revisit the operating system war, if u want to just get on with it and not risk/fiddle (in Astrophotography) XP is a no brainer. I dont care about the pros/cons, XP works.

My recommendation : Reformat the harddisk drive , and install XP Pro SP2 instead of Vista , and
throw the disks for Vista in the whizz bin with all the other garbage.

Unfortunately trying to load XP on this laptop results in BSOD's during the process. Main cause being the drivers XP needs for the laptops hardware during boot/install. Sata /hdd I think being the main culprit.

VMBox is my only option for now, but I dont think it can provide all resources needed from the laptop when emulating the OS and running mem/video intense apps. I'll give it a shot sometime.

edit: The laptop came with Vista. I might contact Asus tech support and see what/if any advice they can provide with drivers and XP.

Vendors often offer a "downgrade" XP disk for nutcases that actually want to use their PCs/Laptops. I bet ur vendor can supply, hammer them.

I may not even need it. Silly me, I should have checked the BIOS options to change the SATA HDD to IDE mode. The options there! :doh:
Now to find that blasted SP2 XP disc.
