John,
I use AVG anti-virus Freeware version. http://www.grisoft.com/doc/289/lng/us/tpl/tpl01
The free version has slow servers for updates though, which isn't normally a problem.

Well, I've used AVG Norton & a few others...All of them let me down more than once by allowing viruses in. I downloaded 'Avast4' about 12 months ago & it's been great! But talk about updates. It's a real stickler for regular updates/upgrades etc.

John, I always use AVG Free Edition (link above in Robbies post) and find it excellent.
It has never let a virus through and this pooter is on the net 10 - 18 hours a day.
It automatically updates regularly and fairly quickly. Longest update I have ever had was about 2 minutes.

If you need a freeware virus scanner AVG is easily the best way to go.
All Norton products are bloatware and happily chew through resources :)

that's being kind, personally I wouldn't use Norton's products if they paid me.....
I use Nod32, you can download a free trial which works for 1 month (and again and again if your prepared to deinstall & reinstall). Nod32 ( www.nod32.com (http://www.nod32.com/) ) has a very good reputation (take a look at the accolades) is very gentle on resources. If you have multiple P.C's and have registered versions you can set up an admin version and mirror the dowload to other P.C's on your LAN. The Australian support guy is very helpful and will negotiate multiple licence (both users and number of years) pricing.
That said, AVG sounds good; I might try that on my other PC.
