350D Problems

I am having problems with my new Canon, i installed the bundled software, took a few pics, all was fine.

Now when i connect to usb port, it is not recognized, and says that it has malfunctioned:doh:

I have uninstalled the driver, re-installed the driver, uninstalled all the bundled software, re-installed all the bundled software, and still it is not rcognized:doh:.

I have evn downloaded a new driver from Cano site, and this also doesn't work:confuse2:

I am at a loss what to do next, apart from placing a new thread in the "for sale" forum:bashcomp:

If anyone could help with this problem, i would be very gratefull, and willing to do a cloud clearing dance in the middle of Bourke street for your reward:prey2:

Are you using a usb hub or straight into the computer port? I've not used direct download from camera to computer for years because of that problem with my old Canon A10. For it, a large part of the problem was either not enough power in the camera battery or I needed a powered hub or both. My solution was to buy a card reader. Best investment I've made for downloading images. No more having to warry about fickle propriatory software.

Make sure the comminication mode in the camera is set to Compueter and NOT printer.

Many people have this problem as a lot of the camera come out the factory preset to printer.

The problem could be the PC and not the camera. It could also be a faulty cable. I would suggest taking the camera back to the dealer and seeing if they can read via the USB interface. Also your OS can make a difference. Win 95 wouldn't read USB without patches and was flaky even with the patches, 98 was a little better but not as good as XP. My EOS20D has no problems being read by the (XP) P.C. It's worth noting that some combinations of P.C., OS and drivers are fussy about which usb port is used, particularly with Win 98. I've seen cases with win98 where an item is installed on say the bottom USB port and won't work when plugged into the upper USB port etc and others where the device works fine then simply stops working and refuses to reinstall. If the problem turns out to be your P.C. you can buy a compact flash card reader for under $50 and simply take the flash card out and read it that way.

Are you plugging it into USB ports on the front of your computer? If you are try plugging it into the rear ports. I often find the front ports rather flakey.
I have 2 on the front of my computer and 1 gives that error while the other works perfectly

I might throw one more thought out there; make sure that when you are trying to do anything with USB devices that the device is NOT connected when you are installing drivers/software etc or you are going to have problems.

Try this if you havent already; uninstall the software, uninstall the drivers, disconnect the device, reinstall the software, reinstall the drivers and THEN plug the device back in. I have had similar problems with my Kodak P&S.

cventer, First thing done with the camera was changing this setting to P.C. Connection:thumbsup:

acropolite, I am running XP Pro, and had no problems with the driver to start with, now it's not working ?
I can connect my S45 without any problem to the same USB, and download images, i thimk the 350's gone mad. I will take the camera back to the dealer today and see if they can read it and assist me.

Howzat, I have tried all USB Ports on my PC, both fronts , both rears:confuse2:

Thiink, I installed the softwre exactly as the instructions set out, only connected the camera once the computer re-started, maybe i removed the USB plug before turning the power off on the camera after downloading images?????

Looks like i will be getting a card reader today, unless the dealer can help me.

It always manages to happen with any USB device... even my USB HDD and iPod will randomly just refuse to work.

For things like cameras, USB hdds and even card readers, they idealy should be plugged into the back ports, not the front ports.

Try restarting Windows, and trying it again. If not, uninstall the drivers for the device, re-install them and try again.

Hotplugging in Windows still isn't right. Some Linux distros do it better!

hehe - I have nevr had one single problem with any of the USB connections on both of my macs (my original G3 tower was one of the first puters in the world to come with usb ports - and firewire- long before PC's had them) in over 6 years of use - with three different digital cameras (including a 350D - now on my dual 1.8 G5 tower - usb 2) I have had not a single moment of problems - or with any other peripheals - all work/ed flawlessly :-)
btw the next gen of macs will use intel chips for the first time (new/designed to order for apple chips) after steve spat the dummy at motorola hehe they cant/wont build the chips any faster :-( anyway i have read reports that the near future new mac intel inside machines will boot up from and run xp on a seperate harddrive quite nicely thankyou very much - sweeeettttttttttt hhheeaaavvvvannn!!!! best of both worlds :-))))))))

EDIT: PS that will make macs a bit cheaper to buy to :-)) as the motorola chips are more expensive as well
PPS real hardcore mac users - would say, why would you want to run xp on your mac??? of course, but due to the lack of astro apps on macs - i would like that feature - and saves having to buy another machine (even if they are cheap)

Why buy a mac?
It's like buying a car that'll only go on 10% of the roads :)

Mac's operating system has a few CORE things going for it, but apart from the fact the vast majority of apps (and games, I'm a gamer :)) are Windows based, I can't justify buying one. I actually have an old Color Classic (Performa 250 is what it was sold as in Asia or something) that still works, and that's the only Mac I've ever owned (but not the only one I've ever used).

My idea of sweet heaven: the new CPU technology that allows two operating systems to run at the same time. XP and Ubuntu here I come :)

People buy macs for lots of reasons - especially now with OSX being unix based (i wouldnt want an essentail system like in a hospital i was in running on xp/windoze ) - the most stable system known to man! games is a definate reason not to buy a mac. But that was deliberate on the behalf of steve jobs (who was a major player in developing atari before he created apple btw) - he didnt want HIS babies to be thought of as a/associated with toys LOL
mind you they have a few quality games available - even if they are out of date a fair bit by the time they are ported for mac and we get them! but they run sweet :-) Another big reason apple is bought - is by print/graphics people that want colorsync which allows them to see the colours on the calibrated screen exactly as they will print out - also number 1 macs are built from the ground up with soley photoshop in mind as the number one reason for their existance -
another reason is rock solid security - i have never even seen a virus/worm/ wateva on my macs - the many pc ones i have recieved via email as attatchments i actually open and click on and play with - just for a laugh
This is the reason the US military like macs too :-) bigtime! (especially os 9 - no type command interface even hahhahaha) their are lots of reasons - music industry use macs a lot - with osx as a base os - with pro tools on top - sweet as - i could go on? but i am way off topic

USUAL EDIT: btw i can run two different os's simultaneously on my macs - OS 10 and OS 9 - completely utterly different os's couldnt be more diff - mind you i prefer not to -slows chews cpu and ram

Iceman: Front ports tend to be pretty dodgy and generally poor for anything that requires it to work all the time without halting (ie a USB HDD, an iPod, etc). The back ports tend to be more reliable, unless your motherboard is cheap...
They're just genreally pretty poor. Also the motherboard USB ports are (obviously) on the motherboard which probably helps a fair bit, whereas front pannel ports have a lovely cable that then plugs into the motherboard.

The only reason I would consider a mac is if I was heavily into the graphics/video editing industry, but apart from that, I wouldn't use it.

About viruses/worms: Worms are created to infect as many people as possible, hence why they're worms. Who has the greatest bite of the pie? Windows-based systems. You just don't reach as many people on a Mac, because there aren't that many compared to Windows. Linux just doesn't let you play with vital system stuff unless you supply root access, and if you've made a virus that can smash through any Linux security device, you probably compiled your OWN version of linux from the groud up anyway! Can't agree about "toys" though; Windows XP is still (I can't believe I'm saying this) a workhorse system, albeit it has many flaws, but it's still popular for a reason, and that is it's a very general-purpose system. Macs seem to be very specialised in what they do, Windows can be made to do anything.

Also I hate having one company almost completely own me, even if they're going to use an Intel CPUs now (a step in the right direction).

I agree and realise thats the reason mate re viruses ect. - thats part of steve jobs reasoning why he didnt want to encourage games - gamers and the gaming scene are notoriosly connected with hackers/dark pyramid ect. as you know - same demographic ect. i actually am surprised how much i like xp - they have come a very long way with all that backwards compatibleness stuff (all the way back to dos lol)- seems they have copied apples ground breaking ideas well as usual - like they did in the beggining with a user friendly gui overlay :-) - similar edible looking gui interface - but is it a true multi tasking sytem like osx? btw arent you oWn3d by Bill the horned one?

Now that's a bit of a stereotype. Gamers and hackers aren't one and the same. Yes, serious gamers do have good skills with computers, we have to, as understanding how they work and what they do is vital for us to be able to push these boxes to their limit. However not all gamers are hackers, and not all hackers are gamers. We're not one and the same. The vast majority of gamers are against hacking, it's not fun to lose all your stuff thanks to a guy in Ohio who broke through your firewall.

For example, I do have knolwedge of how hacking works, and how it is acomplished. Have I hacked? No. Does that mean I will hack? No. However I have applied that knowledge to security of my own system and home network.

Actually the word "hacker" has its roots in people who programmed software and things for computers. The word "cracker" was applied to people who purposely broke into other computer systems. Nowdays, crackers are considered people who break software protection, hackers are considered people who break through security, and script kiddies are the ones who break security on a home terminal simply to cause grief.

Hacker does not equal gamer, we're not the same demographic. There may be parrallels, but unless you actually understand "gaming culture", it might look like we are the same.

Windows is definately derrived from mac os GUIs, that's not secret ;)

What I was referring to with being "oWn3d" by one company, I was talking about hardware. If I want a mac, I had to buy a mac with whatever Apple put in it. With a PC, I can grab whatever hardware I want off the shelf from many different suppliers and build my system to my own specifications. A few brands I have in my case: MSI, Prolink, Intel, Kingmax, XG and liteon. Mac choosing to use Intel hardware is a good option, it's a smart move, hopefully it'll add diversity hardware-wise to the Mac. Software-wise, PC does have a broader selection. I could realistically use one of the many Linux distros out there and have nothing to do with Microsoft (sort of the same with Mac, at least it will be true once Intel's hardware becomes standard in those systems).

I know Soldant your right that was a broad statement - I dont mean all gamers - just some of the kids out to make a name on the periphery - but it is a fertile breeding ground for a few i would imagine. I have been a gamer since the first PS and played the original online version quake (was even in a clan LOL) when everyone was still on dialup towards the end of dialup :-) I mean no disrespect to your good self by my comments. i apologise if it seemed that way mate.

:thumbsup: Well i bought myself a 12 in 1 card reader, so even if i change camera brands, i wont have to worry about drivers reading through the usb's.

I took the camera back to the store, and tested the usb lead, it was definately faulty, and wouldn't work through their card reader, swapped it for a new on, installed the driver from the c.d., and bingo it worked on the card reader and my cam.

I was looking forward to resolving this issue with my nice new lead, but sure enough it still don't work:doh:

I have given up trying to fix this for now, as the card reader is the way to go, i can now download my pics again:thumbsup:

I'm glad you got good a result of sorts in the end TidaL :) now I dont know if this heresay i have heard, has a grain of truth in it - but i have heard from a couple of sources that taking the memory card out of the camera and putting it in a reader constantly over a peroid of time will damage/hasten the demise of the card - can anyone tell me if that is rubbish or not? TIA personally i plug the camera into puter

Team Fortress yes mate - loooveedd it - yer medic was one of my faves - they would trip out hehe - i was quietly jealous tho re mods and cheats - specially by the time you guys got to the Z version/update of it - i was restricted to basic binds like rocket jump and a few others on the mac (cant remember if the mac version ever got beyond a beta one hahahhaa j/k?) i wasnt an elite tho - but i still had a lot of fun
And your right, you dont need life like graphics to enjoy the frag i reckon - great minds think alike there :)

My iPod will work on them, but if I try to transfer large files (ie 100MB and over) there's a good chance it'll error out with an I/O error. The same issue doesn't occur when I plug it into the back of the motherboard. Then again, what did I expect considering the case came with a 400w PSU and 3 casefans :P

Soldant: my memories of TF are getting a bit vague and distant these days - but i remember it was one of the only games in town online in those days - not like now when it is diluted across a million games - thers an amazing new game almost everyday these days it seems? the thing i liked about quake/TF the most was shotguns - didnt need to be a great aim with them - yer medic was a wild character - fixing peoples health and giving the opposition tropical diseases with an axeblow - very out there! :) and it was a bit like an opensource thing with all these people adding their own maps and mods ect. the camaraderie as well - i find that is gone now - i dont remember being able to call in air strikes tho?

Dont accept this Camera. Take it back and get a new one.

If you leave it like this you wont be able to ever re sell it, plus it limits you from using focusing/aquisition software like Images Plus, Maxim DL and DSLR Focus which require the camera to connect to the PC.

I know its hard giving up your baby but your will regret it if you dont...
