gday all

looking for info on replacing my "Series 500" 15mm ep for a televue 15mm ep

would that be a good choice for my Dob (@ f5) 12" GSO
(i mean would the 15mm tv suit my scope ive read in a previous post some where that certain eps dont work too well in in a fast scope?((i may have misunderstood the post?))

bottom line: i dont want to spend a lot of dough (in my case anyway) for a ep that wont work too well in my particular scope :)

any thoughts :)

:D ;) ;) :confuse2: :help3: :wink2:

I have had the TV 15mm PL for about one month now. I've had it out about 6-7 times under light polluted skies (20km from CBD), and only now am I starting to appreciate some differences between the TV & the GSOs. I have 9 & 25mm GSOs, so focal lengths are not comparable. I'd be inclined to say that the differences are not great, but I suspect the TV has better contrast (but can't be sure until I can compare with a 15mm GSO). The big difference is the price: GSO: $39 from Andrews, TV: $145 from Bintel. I'd say the $104 price diff is probably not worth it, if you just want a decent replacement for the s500.

And yes, both types of EPs will work well with just about any scope.

pinpoint stars, more contrast, better colours, and sharper planetary views. that what my comparison between a 9mm GSO and a 10.5mm TV brought out :)
let your budget be your guide :)
I dont really use my 9mm any more :poke:

Andrews are getting 2" 15mm 80 degree FOV soon at $149.00 sounds like a good deal.
Lee told me that he has placed orders for over 100 already so get on the phone and order one asap.
NEW 2" 80 [degrees] 15mm f.l. eyepiece, available soon $149.00 Each

I've got mine on stand by .

Bottom end recommendation, gso 15mm plossl.
Top end recommendation, Pentax XW 14mm

The tv plossl is a good choice, and any of the above will be a vast improvement over the s500.

Cheap ultra-wide for a fast scope; brave move. Be sure to let us know how it performs. (I'm still hopeful one day some one finds a cheaper alternative to Naglers, XWs and the like; but I know I'm only dreaming..)

I'g go the TV plossl. $ 145 plus postage from Bintel. They work great in F5 (or so I'm told) I'm about to find out though. A 20mm should be here either tomorrow or monday.

Does anyone know what the Synta brand super-plossl's are like? Andrews is clearing the super-plossls for $49, and the normal plossl's for $29.

No Idea on the quality. Low end of the scale, considering their price.
I could be wrong though.

by the pricing i'd say gso or s500 level.

l had a couple of synta ep's supplied with a scope l bought a while back both 1.25 and 2" and they were without a doubt the worst ep's l have ever looked through.

The prices are clearance prices, so going off price alone wasnt a good idea. :P

Was looking to see if anyone owned any. Mick might have just solved that riddle though. :)

I am on the same venture as 'John the Vindictive one'.

My intention was to buy a Meade 15mm Plossl. From what I have read about Meade Plossls they are extremely good to excellent for their price of between $65 and $150.

Don't know which one to get as I know some of the Meades are no good at f5.

Ken, Bintel still have series 4000 Plossls advertised for $89.
The 15mm & 20mm you should find ok at f5.

Thanks John, I am thinking 15mm as it's middle of the range and I can Barlow it to 7.5mm. Problem then is My Superview barlows to 15mm so I will end up with 2 EP's at 15mm.

i generally dont take the barlow into acct. wouldnt the SV barlowed not look as good as your 15mm meade anyhow. there fore it souldnt be a problem. :)

Why don't you hold out till the Star Camp, then try out various EP's.

From what I have read there are two breeds of Meade s4000 plossls.
The older ones made in Japan are said to be excellent, whilst the newer made in China ones as said to be on a par with typical Chinese plossls.

If it was my money I would be sourcing some of the 5 element Japanese types aka Celestron Ultima , orion ultrascopics, Antares ultimas from OS.

I couldn't testify to this but the latest 4000 series from china are shockers...according to plenty of user reviews.

The series 5000 plossl by meade...well, some rave about em' & some hate em'. Meade QC still leaves a lot to be desired? If your going to spend upto 150 bucks on a 5000 plossl you may as well spend that on a TV plossl. No QC probs with them apparently?
