"Images Plus" software for DSLR imaging/control

Hi All, reading some online DSLR tutorials I see Images Plus software for camera control, focussing assistance etc is recommended. Any thoughts on this. :shrug:The latest says it's for visat and controls the 40D. Looks like it would do what EOS utility would do if it worked on my pc.

I use ImagesPlus for focus assist and camera control for my 350D. It does have control for the 40D as well.

It's a great program, and can be used for post-processing as well (calibrating, registering, post-processing including DDP etc).

DeepSkyStacker does most of the above as well, but has limited post-processing functionality. It is free though!

I'll second IP for all round DSLR control, though I use DSLR Focus for most things. Unfortunately it doesn't, and probably won't, support the 40D. Another option is MaxDSLR

I'm wondering/hoping :shrug:also that with this I wont need EOS Utility which I have now exhausted all efforts to ever get to work. The camera control features on IS apparently allow auto download of RAW images etc, which I'd been told you otherwise need EOS Utility for... ?

Still shouldn't need the EOS utility Rob. Use a Card Reader to get them onto your machine (which is a better way to download them rather than direct to the laptop MOO ) and then IP can read the CR2 files directly.

Have you considered you may have a corrupted disk with your EOS utility on it. You are quite welcome to borrow my disk to load what you need. Apart from the drivers I'd imaging the rest is pretty much the same.

Thanks Paul, but the disk is fine, it installed EOS on my sons XP laptop do trouble at all. It's just this damned diseased Vista lump that wont play ball (though from contact on Canon forum, it's clear that Visat isn't the problem as it does work for some).

Do you know if Images Plus will allow the downloading I want to do?

If you use ImagesPlus to control the camera, you set it to download the files directly after it's taken them. So you don't capture to the card at all.

I don't use any Canon software, except the driver disk support etc that IP needs to be able to control the camera.

You'll end up with a directory of CR2 files on your computer ready for processing.

I agree with keeping the images in the camera---much easier than trusting computer and camera to keep communication going and not stuff up the session.

As for the drivers, you can download them from the Canon website. that way you're sure to get the latest version.

I've never had a problem downloading the images from the camera to the computer, only takes about 1-2 seconds. It takes about an additional 10 seconds to convert from raw to jpeg if you've got the "display image after download" option turned on.

I have and its a PITA. I don't know why it happens, but after a few or many downloads (depends on the mood of the equipment) things jam up and I have to switch off camera and IP and restart. Maybe some persistence on my part would get to the bottom of things, but I took the easy route.
That said, IP is great for conversion, calibration and stacking. Also good for focusing.
