I guys, it seems that the more I need to connect to the Lappy the less ports I have, so it is probably a question of what is the best to fulfill my needs.

Would I need a hub that is powered or not, and would it have to be suitable for USB 2 only, and/or for USB 1.1 or both.

Is there anything special that I must look for.

Thank You.

Leon

Get a powered USB 2 hub - USB is backward compatible so a USB 2 hub will work with 1.1 devices but a USB 1.1 hub will not let a USB 2 device work at full speed (I think it still works at reduced speed though). Belkin hubs work for me.

My 2 cents worth - I have a 7 port powered Belkin hub, and I have had no end of trouble with it.

As per Peter's post, get a USB 2.0 hub, which is backwardly compatible.

Thanks Guys while in Office works today I was considering the Belkin Hub, but there was so many to choose from, I thought I had better inquire which would be more suitable.

I only need a couple of extra ports so a Hub with 4 extra would be more than plenty.

Don't these powered hubs come with the expectation that you are going to connect to an AC power supply? Does anyone run them off a battery? If so, details would be good.

I use a 4 port Belkin powered hub works great--dont forget though It will only effectively give you 3 extra ports as it needs to be plugged into an existing port so you lose that one. As for a power supply they generally run on 5 and a bit volts so a 6 volt power outlet on your 12 volt power supply will do nicely. Works for me

Leon,

I use a Targus 4 port usb Hub as per the link.

http://www.targus.com/au/product_details.asp?sku=ACH63US

It connects as normal to your lappy and will give you 4 operational ports.
If you need more power to the hub, it comes with a "Y" cable that has 2 usb connectors at the end.
One is for the tfr of data to and from (black), the other being solely for power (red).
No AC adaptor required - that has got to be a good thing:thumbsup:

All is fine as long as you have 2 usb ports on your lappy if you need the power.

Retails for around $40.00
There are probably more out there by other suppliers also.
