Hi all

I'm pleased to announce the countdown launch to the IceInSpace AstroCamp 2008 - IISAC08!

http://www.iceinspace.com.au/iisac/iisac2008/iisac08_logo-web300.jpg (http://www.iceinspace.com.au/iisac)

The IceInSpace AstroCamp event is taking place on the 30th October to 2nd November, 2008 - just over 6 months away. It will be our 3rd IISAC event, and after a very successful event in 2007 (with Comet McNaught gracing our skies!), we're planning to make the 2008 event just as great! (We're trying to get Eta Carinae to explode.. we'll see :))

Please check out the IISAC page (http://www.iceinspace.com.au/iisac) for some preliminary details - of course it will be continually updated over the next 6 months as more information and detail is confirmed - so check back regularly, and put in your annual leave forms now!

Thanks and I hope to see you there!

This thread is to be used for any questions and discussions about IISAC2008 and will be continually updated as the event draws near.

We are hoping to go to this - sounds great .... just a question I live in Tassie and don't want to travel with my Dob - is there anywhere to hire a good telescope locally there???

Hi Rhisaac. The NAS (Newcastle Astronomical Society) might be able to recommend someone, but also don't forget that there'll be hundreds of other scopes there to look through, as well as some large aperture dobsonians giving sky tours.

You really don't need to bring a telescope at all if you don't want to.

With a bit of luck I'm hoping to make it this year.

Have to work out some transportation issues as well or buy an ED80.

Cheers

Yeah, I wouldn't mind going myself, pitch a tent, and beg someone for a look through a really big reflector. I'd have to catch a plane and probably a connecting flight as well. I'll have to think about it, but I'd love to go.:)

Inmykombi
19-04-2008, 01:06 AM
I for one, would have no problem at all if you wanted to spend some time at my eyepieces.

I dont have a dob, so you will have to put up with the images being upside down and back to front....

I am sure as Mike says, that there will be plenty of other scopes there as well.

Cheers.

Thank to both of you!!! That's great .... we will just bring our tent then and help anyone who needs it. :)

I would like to go, not sure yet though. The SPSP was great but it coincided with my wifes OS trip so it was easy to get approval.
What is the average night time temperature during Oct/Nov up there.
Any fish in the river (new hobby)?

Fahim if your wife gets to go over seas, doesn't that give you the right to go to the next 10 camps no questions asked? I know I would be demanding something like that or she would be swimming OS.

Hi all

I've updated the IISAC2008 (http://www.iceinspace.com.au/?iisac) page this morning with some new information, including:

* Prices (http://www.iceinspace.com.au/?iisac#PRICES)
* Daytime Activities, Guest Speakers and Workshops (http://www.iceinspace.com.au/?iisac#DAYTIME)
* Food and Beverage information (http://www.iceinspace.com.au/?iisac#FOODBEV)
* plus some other minor updates throughout the page.

No booking form yet, but hopefully i'll have that live in the next 3-6 weeks.

When you check out the prices for this years event, you'll see that IISAC2008 is more affordable for everyone, and is much better value for families than in previous years.
In terms of food, some of the feedback we received from previous years is that a good percentage of the people are happy to arrange their own dinner - camp style cooking, BBQ etc. So in line with that, the catered dinner provided by Gresford RFB is still available but it is now an optional extra and is not included in the registration costs.

The event is still 4 months away, but with the prices and more information for you now hopefully you can start making plans to attend!

I hope to see you all there.

This will be my very first Astro camp so I am really looking forward to it (especially the dark skies).

It is getting closer, only 4 months away.

I have not been previously (or any astrocamp for that matter), looking at the photos I only see tents. We have a new baby (1 Months old now) and can borrow a caravan to drive from Melbourne which is more suitable. Is this the norm / ok?

Is there normally a 'weather prediction' done a few days before the event as there is no point driving for a day to site when the forcast is gloom?

Looking forward to my first camp,

Regards
Big Dave

Hi Dave,

Yeah a van is okay, we'll tow one up from Albury/Wodonga. You'll certainly have a very long day with a baby if you're going to tow one from Cranbourne. I'd suggest you take two days.

iceman
09-07-2008, 06:13 AM
Hi Dave
Caravans are fine - a few people bring caravans so it's no problem. It's quite a windy narrow road into the camp so just drive carefully.

No doubt there'll be weather predictions posted in this thread - so just keep an eye out. Otherwise search the BOM site for Lostock and you can do your own forecasting :)

Star parties are a great opportunity to meet up with like-minded amateur astronomers for some great conversation and great company, so even if the weather turns foul, people always have a great time.

I look forward to seeing you there!

I was just wondering if there is going to be an Imaging competition at IISAC 08?

Hi guys, no imaging comp at IISAC2008. Maybe in the future.

There's enough to organise without the added stresses of an imaging competition :) The rules, the judging, the prizes... too much!

But I won't rule it out for next year or in the future..

Matty P
24-08-2008, 10:25 AM
No worries Mike.

Alex and I can have our own little imaging comp. ;)

iceman
24-08-2008, 07:19 PM
After seeing all the effort and stress that originally Richard Jaworski, and now Greg Priestly, go through at the SPSP imaging comps, it's certainly not something that can be taken on lightly!

RB
24-08-2008, 07:25 PM
Exactly !
Hats off to anyone who tries to organise these star parties and/or imaging comps.
There's just so much organising and behind the scenes effort needed to run the events smoothly.

has anyone stayed at the Lostock caravan park? How hairy is the drive at night?

is the accommodation ok-dont need anything swish just these old bones cant cope with camping any more?
thanks

Narayan

iceman
26-08-2008, 08:10 AM
I'm pretty sure some people stayed there last year, Narayan. I imagine the drive isn't too much fun at night but as long as you take it slow and look out for wildlife, it's probably about a 25 minute drive.

I'm not sure if they have any onsite vans or cabins? I can give them a call if you like. Otherwise, you can grab a bunkbed if you don't want to camp.

So far, 17 adults and 7 children are booked in.

Keep the bookings coming guys!

With only 2 months to go until IISAC2008, it's time to start planning! Put in those leave forms at work, start buttering up the partner, get the kids excited!

What a great opportunity to observe under dark skies, meet up with old and new friends from the IceInSpace community, and share this great hobby with like-minded people. If you've never been to a star party before, now is the perfect opportunity to get along to your first one. You'll never look back!

We also welcome two new sponsors for IISAC2008 and IISis4 - Australian Sky & Telescope (http://www.astmag.com.au), and The Imaging Source Astronomy Cameras (http://www.astronomycameras.com). We thank you for your support.

Hi all

I've got some really newbie questions

*I have never been to any astronomy meetings before and i'm thinking of bringing the wife and kids along to this one. I know the less light the better, but how much light if any is allowed? i.e campfires etc?? Also is there power available to tent sites? We have 4 children. 1 of them is 1yrs old and we would need to heat bottles etc.
*I have a Celestron Nexstar which I would need some assistance (training) with. Would there be people there who could help?
* So rego for 2 adults and 4 children is $100 + $10 a night for camping?

I'm sure I have more questions so please be patient :)

iceman
15-09-2008, 09:40 AM
Hi Spaceace

- Fires are not allowed at all, sorry.
- Down on the observing field, no white light is allowed. Red lights are allowed, and are usually fine to get around with.
- There is no power available to the tent sites, but there is power at the farmhouses.
- The farmhouses have microwaves and stoves so you can heat bottles there no problems.

I'm sure there will be people there will similar telescopes, and you can also post a "help wanted" ad on the noticeboard that will be there.

Yep.

Hope to see you there!

I'm pleased to announce an additional guest speaker for IISAC2008:

Simon O'Toole
Title: Planets Beyond Our Solar System
Outline: It has been 13 years since the first planet was found around another star like our Sun. In this talk Simon will discuss the 300 or so planets now known around other stars, and how they have radically changed our understanding of how planets form.

About Simon
After graduating with a PhD in astrophysics from the University of Sydney in 2003, Simon spent 3 years as a research fellow in Germany, before moving back to the Anglo-Australian Observatory in Sydney to work on the hunt for extra-solar planets. His research interests include extra-solar planets, stellar variability and late stages of stellar evolution.

Simon's talk will be on Friday afternoon. The full agenda for guest speakers and presentations will be loaded onto the IISAC (http://www.iceinspace.com.au/iisac)page in the next day or two.

Hi All

Im a newbie to this group who just joined today.
Im extremely interested in attending the IISAC this year but am curious
whether there are any spaces still left. I realise its a bit of a late enquiry (nearly end of sept now!)
Also is there anyone based in Sydney? I don't have access to a car
so it would be great if I could hitch a ride. Will pitch in for petrol of course!

Hi Jane

As Andrew said, you're certainly not too late. Heaps of spaces still available.
There will be some people coming up from Sydney but i'm not sure the best to try and arrange that lift. You should probably work out the days you're going etc and then post a thread in general chat to see who's coming from Sydney and can give you a lift.

I took the family up to Lostock Scout Camp (the place where IISAC will be!) last night for some reconnaissance, 1 new moon out from the event.

Nothing really changed, a few things to check with the scout people about, but as I remembered, a lovely dark spot.

Was a beautiful hot day (just as I remembered from January last year!!!), however the swimming hole was freezing! :) Not quite what I remember from last year.. The water was so much colder than last year :) In a month's time it's bound to be warmer. But the kids still loved it.

And man what a beautiful dark sky, despite being very blowy last night. Will post some images later.

Here's a few photos, more coming later.

4 x swimming hole
1 x 7-photo panorama of the lower camping/observing area reduced to 2000px wide (was 10000 pixels wide).
1 x smoke from a burnoff over the mountain. I thought it was going to ruin the night (like the smoke at SPSP this year!) but luckily it blew away shortly after dark.

Just converted to jpeg and reduced for posting.

We've got 91 people coming so far (76 adults, 15 children). That's a good number, but it'd be great if those that still haven't booked can get your bookings in soon.

I need to finalise the size of the marquee and the numbers for catering and t-shirts by mid-next-week, so I'd prefer to have more accurate numbers.

Also remember that I need to receive your payment by the 14th October to receive the early-bird-discount ($10 off the total price) - that's only 4 days away!

The good news for those coming to IISAC2008 (http://www.iceinspace.com.au/iisac), is that the prize pool for the lucky door prize has now increased.

Check out the IISAC page for details of the lucky door prize raffle.

Andrew Murrell put those Calsky lists together for Mike. Or at least he was doing that when I went on holidays 2 weeks ago :)

Andrew is giving a talk on the observing targets at IISAC. It will be based on appropriate targets for various aperture group telescopes. eg. under 8" aperture, 8" to 16" aperture and over 16" aperture.

Cheers

an unofficial announcement;)

to raise some much needed funds for my Relay for Life:thumbsup: i am going to offer a very unusual competition. For a small donation of $2 or more you get a ticket in a very unusual raffle. The winner of the "raffle" will have the opportunity of throwing a Meade ultra wide angle 2" series 5000 24mm eyepiece at a yet to be designated location at the camp. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to toss a $500 eyepiece and not feel the least bit guilty that it is yours!! with over 100 adults going I should be able to easily crack $100 for Relay for Life - and have the video rights to boot LOL. Come one come all:thumbsup::D:thumbsup: the throwing of the holy hand grenade will take place on Friday before dinner. I urge all IISAC participants to take part in this raffle and you have the opportunity to possibly hold a world record for the longest distance for throwing a Meade Series 5000 2" eyepiece:scared:. and it will be officially recorded for posterity on video for all the world to see:lol:

please note the competition will not go ahead until I have surpassed $100 (donations of $2 or more are tax deductable - and I have a receipt book)

if nothing else this is an opportunity to register for ISSAC just to come and watch, and enjoy the weekend. think of it as the sacrifice to the weather gods

(sample image is of a 30mm)

That is a great idea Dave. You should easily get past the $100 mark. It is going to be interesting to watch if it goes ahead.

Just a question. Say you win the raffle, do you have an option of keeping the eyepiece instead?

And can we try to catch the eyepiece at the opposite end. :P

Hi Monte,

You bring the brew, I will keep it cold, and you can gawk at my telescope for as long as you like.

Cheers,
John B

PS: It gets very very hot out there, so we need a lotta brew :D

I couln't find a definitive answer in the thread anywhere, but has anyone taken a Next-G Nokia phone or (more importantly) Next-G-enabled PCMCIA lappy card with them to that area recently? The only way I can safely go is if I can get a reasonably reliable internet connection to check on work things Thursday and friday while I'm there. The way the Next-G system is rolling out (over CDMA) means that signal strength changes constantly in any one location - usually for the better.

Anyone?

iceman
23-10-2008, 02:05 PM
When my wife and I went up there a few weeks ago, the NextG worked fine in Gresford but her battery had run out when we were at Lostock so I wasn't able to check it there.

Could probably call Lostock Dam Caravan Park and ask them. At most it might be a 10-15 minutes drive back up the road to get the access.

I tried using my NextG PCMCIA card at night and it didn't work from the bottom farmhouse. I didn't try it at the top of the hill or anywhere else.

Omaroo
23-10-2008, 02:25 PM
Thanks Mike - I'll give them a call.

It'd also be nice to have net access there - so that we could download any necessary drivers or whatnot for people if they needed them.

If the worst of the weather is in the middle of the week we should be OK - even benefit from it as it will clear the air!

That's my positive spin on it anyway..........

It's also about meeting new interesting people and catching up with people we don't see enough.

There are just as many stars on the ground!

I'll still pout if it's cloudy but to be fair this year has been pretty good as far as the weather goes on new moon weekends.

26-10-2008, 09:44 AM
you are not wrong in saying that. I have never mixed the family and astronomy before - this is an experiment that (if lightning added)could create a monster:scared: or create an understanding of what I like:shrug: and probably is the best example of the company I keep  .

She has never been camping - and this offers hot showers and clean toilets. So she gets to see a mob of obsessed astronuts - LOL - Oh no Michael from bintel is bringing me some astro goodies:scared: might have to head that one off from the pass - oh and secretly get those serial usb connectors from Gary when she isnt looking:whistle: astro wife dollars are 1/10 ratio

where n varies from 1 to 10 depending on what you can get away with

26-10-2008, 09:06 PM
Ha, same equation just reversed....

For every dollar you spend on astro gear he gets to spend 1/n th of it on his own hobby.

But even better, he gets to pay for whatever you sepnd!

So support the economy, and spend, spend, spend...

Going via Echuca / Parkes for a look to get into the mood. If anyone else is going that way look out for a White Territory at the Dish about lunch time on Wednesday - Dont be shy, the wife and baby don't really bite!

Hope the weather reports are wrong, but will have a good time at my first astro-camp anyway.

Unfortunately Andrew Murrell has rolled his ankle and won't be able to attend IISAC2008 :(

John and Gary will still have their 18" scopes there for the night sky tours, but unless someone local wants to (and has room for) take up the 25", it'll have to stay home this time around.

Hope your ankle gets better soon, Andrew!

Every forecast I look at is different.

Thursday looks to be ok, clearing after an early shower. And Friday shows a thunderstorm in the afternoon. So thursday night *should* (?) be clear?

Friday, maybe it'll clear after the storm.

Saturday, too early to tell.
