Not real impressed with Starrynight at this stage.
I had a few problems running it with the 350D so I upgraded SNP and since the upgrade it will not run my scope any more or even recognise that anything is plugged in at all yet sky atlas pro runs the scope fine.

Thanks Rob for the heads up. I will give it a go and hope that it fixes it.

Cheers Daniel.

Hi Daniel,

Have you tried contacting their support? I think I have seen this problem
mentioned on their yahoo group too. If you haven't already tried you might
find there is a simple fix. Here's the links if you need them...

I was having problems with printing star charts, which now appear to be
mostly fixed.

I have to agree with Daniel.

SN will not install on any of the computers I have running Vista. I contacted SN support and they told me to install the upgrade - the upgrade will not install because the base version is not installed (it won't). Support also blamed Vista for the problem - suggested I revert to XP.

They next suggested I upgrade my video card drivers - I did and still won't install. A friend suggested Catalyst as a possible solution - same result. I wasted an incredible amount of time trying to get SN to work.

I have changed to Voyager which will work under Vista and so far seems to be problem free (not to mention a demo version which is free).

Geoff,

Sorry to hear your still having prob's running SN on Vista. Not sure if you
have been keeping up with developments via their usergroup, but I think
most things are fixed. Unfortunately there are always issues when a new
OS comes online. I read online recently even the second incharge at
Microsoft was having problems with Vista, calling his new computer a
$2000.00 email box. Because thats all he could get it to do.

btw, you can get a demo version of SN for free too : )

Hi Rob

I've looked through the usergroup - not much joy.

My problem with SN is that I can't install the base version under Vista, and any subsequent updates which are addressed at fixing problems such as I have are not possible - they all require an initial installation to update.

The only time I got it to install was on my desktop (Vista) by changing the installation directory to a non-NTFS USB drive (FAT 32). I was prepared to do the same on my laptop, but it bypassed any attempt at installing the program and went almost immediately to the second disk and finished.

Now the same is happening on any of the Vista laptops I have tried this on (all 2).

Don't get my evaluation of the program wrong - I quite liked it when I was running it under XP - I could relate what was on the screen to what I was actually seeing.

If I didn't want to use it, I would not have spent so much time trying. I have finally admitted defeat and found an alternative in Voyager.

Cheers

Geoff,

Have you tried this work around off Imaginova's website. Your problem was
a common problem some months back. Did you try installing under XP
compatibility? as discribe here... From memory this fix worked for most folks

Windows Vista and Starry Night
http://www.starrynightsupport.com/support_trio/index.php?action=kb&article=234

And here are a couple of other links that maybe of help...

Windows Vista and previous versions of Starry Night

Intel graphics cards on Windows Vista
http://www.starrynightsupport.com/support_trio/index.php?action=kb&article=242

Also if you uninstall SN, make sure you kill the "Prefs" folder usually located
here on an XP machine.

C:\Documents and Settings\[YourUserName]\Local Settings\Application Data\Imaginova Canada\

This folder can cause a few problems if not removed prior to re-install

Hope these helped, otherwise Go! Voyager

Thanks, Rob, for the time you have put into helping me find a solution. I have looked at the references in your post, and have found a few that I have not tried - now to find the time!

I was happily setting up in my backyard - almost finished and, not just clouds, but lightning and thunder as well.

I quickly packed up and came inside - read your post - now it is also raining!

Cheers

It's the same up here in northern NSW, just finished packing myself. After I
had setup to a clear evening, went inside to print off a couple of charts, by
the time I got back outside it had clouded over :mad2:

Anyways, if you do find the time... good luck with SN. Let us know how you
got on.

Cheers
