Which USB port is COM 1?

I have a Dell inspiron 1520 with 4 USB ports. ASCOM is asking me which port I am connected to. How do I know which port is which?

Open "Control Panel|System|Device Manager"

Click on "Ports (Com and LPT)"

If nothing is plugged in to the computer, there will be nothing under this heading, and depending on the operating system, the heading may even be missing.

Plug in the USB connection and wait until it is recognised by the computer.

Something along the lines of "Serial on USB port (COM N)" will appear. That is the com port to enter into the ASCOM dialog.

I am assuming you are using a USB to Serial adapter, or similar.

If nothing appears under the Ports heading, then the connection is not recognised by your computer. If so, let me know the sequence of connection from the mount to the computer.

Thanks Geoff, It turned out to be COM 4, which is great, because now my pc is talking to my mount and vice versa.

All I have to do now is work out why PHD is not detecting my ToUCam.

I had the ToUCam plugged in to the USB port last night. No luck then.

Today I went out to Jaycar and bought another USB to Serial (DB9) Cable to connect the long exposure mod to on the ToUCam to the pc and see if that talks.

This begs another question.

I am using a USB to serial (DB9) Cable to connect the telescope to the pc via a RS232 cable.

I Have bought another USB to serial (DB9) Cable to run from the long exposure part of the ToUCam to the pc.

The cable comes with a driver disk ro run it. If I am adding another cable, will both of them run from the already installed disk, or do I have to install a new disk for every cable I add?

Unless this is a specific astro cable then the drivers were installed the first time and all subsequent USB/Serial cables (of that type and brand) should work.

Barry - once again, |Control Panel|System|Device Manager|. Under Imaging Devices, if your ToUCam is plugged in to your computer, there should be an entry for it - if not, you will need to install the drivers for it. Did your ToUCam come with an installation disk? If so, unplug the Cam, run the installation program and then follow their prompts.
