The image is from the HDTV camera on-board the Kaguya/Selene spacecraft of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA).
More incredible images, and video of the event, here:

Great images indeed. Images of great beauty. Neil Armstrong was always thrilled by the sight of earthrise but deep down was saddened by the fact that the inhabitants of such a beautiful looking planet couldn't live peacefully together.
A wonderful image, Earthrise with Oz leading the way. I agree with Neil Armstrong's sentiments, we've only got one planet and there is no way off at the moment.
Very inspiring.

Correct me if i am wrong but given the moon essentially shows us the same side, with a little libration, then the earth would neither rise nor set .... a small amount of up and down to match libration...... the earth would just spin on its axis.

This maybe the case, but an orbiter circling the Moon would experience a rising and setting Earth from it's perspective going round the Moon if it's orbit takes it between the Earth and the Moon.:D

Yup! that is correct:thumbsup: if you have Starry Night you can sit yourself
on the moon and look back at Earth and see this in action.
