Hi all - just had an email from Apple stating that the new system is arriving. Should be brilliant.

What caught my eye was the theme - it's astro-oriented!

Hey fringe_dweller,
Is that a Robert Louis Stevenson quote in your signature?
Who is Kearn? Character, literary critic (Doris Kearns!!??)

Go the Mac by the way!
Although all the useful astro software runs on PC!
I type this via Vista on the PC as my trusty eMac sits to my left pumping out Punjabi MC.
A mate has a new model iBook - a work of art as usual.
If only the price became right!
Recently attended a work related medical conference at the Adelaide Convention Centre, 2 of the US visiting speakers used PowerBooks and Keynote for their presentations - what a breath of fresh air. The rotating cube transition getting "Ooohs" and "Aahs" from the audience.
I love Macs!!

*i include full poem at bottom

hmmmppff!!

its my christian name dude  true! its an old gaelic (garlic) early version of kevin i think, hence the name surname kearns is a deritive of say 'son of kearn' like jones is son of john? good ol industrial revolution first census driven mess up! so they are all my children, wow!

i think i heard at one stage mid year, I dont know if it is still true, but a few months ago, with the newer the intel duo macbook pros, they had 25% of the laptop market in the US! up from there usual 3-5%? i think

Escape at Bedtime, by Robert Louis Stevenson

The lights from the parlour and kitchen shone out
Through the blinds and the windows and bars;
And high overhead and all moving about,
There were thousands of millions of stars.
There ne'er were such thousands of leaves on a tree
Nor of people in church or the Park,
As the crowds of the stars that looked down upon me,
And that glittered and winked in the dark.

The Dog, and the Plough, and the Hunter, and all,
And the star of the sailor, and Mars,
These shone in the sky, and the pail by the wall
Would be half full of water and stars.
They saw me at last, and they chased me with cries,
And they soon had me packed into bed;
But the glory kept shining and bright in my eyes,
And the stars going round in my head.

Another happy camper!

Market share is growing - I have converted 3 people in the past year myself..... none have looked back since.....

Be nice to have some more astro software though..... can't bring myself to put Parallels/Windows on my new black MacBook though - wouldn't be right....

Anyone bought this upgrade yet? I've just been stonkered by the Leopard guided tour and can't wait to upgrade. The ability to read through & preview most types of multi-page documents (page to page) without physically opening them is great. The Time Machine backup system is incredible - there is nothing else out there in Windows land that comes close to its usability and sheer elegance. This OS is going to be fabulous. Can't wait to pick it up this week.

On a side note - I just bought one of the new Apple keyboards and a new 2-d scroll mouse for my Vista box. The best k/b and mouse I've ever used. They take a little getting used to but the low-profile "ceramic-feel" keys are terrific.

I have it.... it is good - I can't use Time Machine effectively as I'm using a laptop without a connected HDD.....
Quicklook is cool, but haven't really found a use yet!
Stacks are no good - I find them annoying and useless to be honest - google this and you'll see what people are saying....
Overall a good upgrade - not the same wow factor as Tiger had though.

I think I'll agree with you on the Stacks front Lee - but the QuickLook tool will be a real boon to our staff (graphics studio). I'm interested to know if multiple Macs can utilise the same network storage device for Time Mchine or is it limited to a directly-connected volume?

The Spaces system is what I've really been waiting for. After being a Linux user for years I really miss having multiple virtual desktops available. Now we've got them on Mac too. Yay! You can have you mail open full-screen on one, browser in another and Photoshop in a third and just flick between. Much nicer than a single desktop and active windows.

SO are we happy campers with this OS?

With Leopard (10.5) or with OSX in general David? If the latter - yes - absolutely. Arguably the best OS there ever was. if the former - we'll find out this week.
