Beat the buggers - how to get around loading Astrosoftware at work

I cheated a bit, and loaded up Cartes de Ciels onto the laptop then copied the lot to my portable HDD. I then plugged that into my work PC, and ran the EXE file and the software is working fine - even loaded up the latest comet elements.

At last I can run something without worrying about loading onto the work PC - therefore the IT nasty people will leave me alone:D

I assume you do not use Vista?
IT would be able to block access to removable drives in Vista.

you can currently do it from win2000 to xp - all it requires is the USB ports on or off in regedit script on login or startup, anyone can do it. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;823732

i never found this KB article when I was looking some time ago.
I thought it was only possible with WinXP to disable all USB ports but not specific devices, e.g. storage devices.

Well large 8 -16 GB USB2 stick are < $100 now. IT departments who evenly minimally know their stuff install a product like Tier3 Huntsman - that examines all network IP traffic looking for all packet anomalies, viruses and inappropriate versions of software (detailed inspections down to the dll version and checksum reference and trace how they entered a network and where distributed) - in real time. We did this at a large bank and could instantly see life insurance agents coming into Bank branches and trying to connect with wrong or incomplete versions of Windows updates run, forbidden software, viruses etc basically everything and alert security whilst they were still in the branch.

Basically everything is discoverable to someone with even a modest budget, know how and the correct technologies to control their environment - be careful!

If I want to load anything onto the works computer or server I put it there. Of course I happen to be the IT guy in any case.

quite true - but they have to run an app for that. They tried that a few times about 5 years ago and I kept closing their application before they managed to get a screen. because of the nature of the work I do we need admin rights to operate some software that wont work locked down. As a result, there were a few loop holes:whistle: LOL forced them to come and see me:P;)

Yes I know, I downloaded a few certain internet log files from the server a while back:whistle:. Traced the IP MAC addresses down to certain PC's on the network that had been accessing certain illicite material on the net that was not exactly work oriented, more on the pleasure industry side of life if you know what I mean. I kept the info and burnt it to CD - still have it somewhere as backup. You know in case of dismissal bring out the weapon of mass destruction :D
