My Acer Aspire 3610 has 3 USB ports on the LHS, and one on the rear. When I originally set up Starry Night, I used one of the ports to connect the lappy with my SkySensor2000. By trial and error, I ascertained that it was port 4, and labelled it as such. A few weeks later, when I came to connect SS2K, the laptop decided that this port was now port 3! OK, for the past year it has been port 3 every time I have used it, until last night, when I couldn't make a connection. As rain threatened, I packed up in disgust, and went indoors. This afternoon, I decided to check out the problem, and again by trial and error, I have determined that the port is now number 8!!

What gives? How can these ports change of their own accord? Will it change again at the equinox, and again with the next full moon, or will it wait until Jupiter is in Sagittarius, and miraculously change again?:screwy:

If there is a computer psychiatrist out there who can shed some light on the means by which this can happen, I should be most grateful.

I had a similar problem with a USB hub, If I unlpugged the cameras and then plugged them in again while the computer was running, the computer would insist on loading the drivers for the camera, despite the fact I had plugged them back into the same hole in the hub, Now to cut a long story short, that hub died of unnatural causes, the new powered belkin doesnt care if I unplug something and plug it in again. Ill be watching this thread too , may learn something from the IT gurus...:)

I have asked around quite a bit about this problem, and no-one has any bright ideas. However, one person I asked, questioned whether there was a USB to 9 pin adapter involved, which there is, and he surmised that this might well be the problem, but could offer no explanation as to why it might happen.

Don't any of you IT experts have any idea what the problem may be?

Hi Guys,
Windows is a beauty for rearranging hardware resources.
Normally it will reallocate the ports if you insert the usb device into a different port than last time.
The only way to stop this happening is to disable "Plug-n-Play in CMOS.
But, this can lead to making hardware more stubborn to install.

To check which port is being used, insert device into usb port, then open hardware mgr to verify what it is set to...
Hope this helps:)
