I would love to take my 2 scopes to my Grandchildren's school, they are having an astronomy month.
But unfortunately, here in Qld, they have outlawed things like this unless I have a "Blue Card" .
I understand the need for them, to keep kids safe from pedophiles and other nasty characters, but when teachers and parents are there also, I am at a loss as to why the law is so strict.
I will get a blue card, but it will be too late for the eclipse I think.
Mike.

The ASV is setting up a number of telescopes on the top level car park at Victoria Gardens (aka IKEA Richmond) for a "gold coin donation". If it looks cloudy, I might set mine up on the second from top level, that way if it rains I won't get wet  I'm only half as dumb as I look you know
This is pretty central to most of Melbourne and should have adequate parking.

Details are still being worked out but the usual sidealk astronomy thing I do in conjunction with local council's full moon "Moonwalk" program (on, or near, actual full moon) may include a public "lunar eclipse" component this time around. I'll post again when things have been sorted out.

Hey Mike,
That's not quite true, if you are a guardian of a child in that school you do not need a blue card to work at that school, you would be well within your legal rights to attend, if in doubt google child protection and look at their web site, it is quite clear on this. I have a blue card so i can attend schools with my astronomy which I do quite a bit.
cheers, Dennis.

Last weeks 1st qtr viewing was a washout but the skies have cleared and we are looking forward to a cloudless evening, just like for sidewalk astronomy night.
We will be at Brunswick Heads on the terrace reserve betwen the road bridge and the foot bridge from about 6pm.We are encouraging visitors to bring their digital cameras to take pics through the telescope. We will also have some animations and movie clips on the Moon and Eclipses in general.
Any extra scopes of course are welcome!
Warren Taylor will be setting up at main beach Byron Bay if you are down that way

Haven't heard of any public events. I might head to Mount Cootha, Brisbane with my binos. Looking forward to seeing the tourists reaction to the eclipse.

I've done my bit to arouse awareness of the event.
I printed up heaps of handouts, with reference to IceInSpace of course, and put some lunar eclipse images on disk and had them running as a slide show on the mini dvd player. Lucky Greg wasn't there because it took up a lot of counter space on the coffee cart.
LOL To every single customer I asked "How would you like your coffee and did you know there is a Lunar Eclipse on Tuesday night?" Amazingly just about everyone was interested and wanted to have a chat.
Today I went to all 3 local schools and left handouts for the teachers.

Onya Jeanette.
Yep, I've annoyed the whole town about it, every school kid has a flyer, and the flyers are up all around town  and it has become the talking point in conversation at the General Store.
Just gotta hope the sky stays clear for the event I've organised. We have Gale force winds forecast, but wind won't block the eclipse. Only cloud will do that. I don't care if we all get blown away, as long as we can see it :D

I've been annoying everyone at work about it too.. sending them links, putting notices on the noticeboards in the kitchens ;)
Yesterday I was actually contacted by someone I worked with 6-7 years ago.. he got an email from one of his current colleagues, who was telling him about the eclipse and linking him to the IceInSpace article. He had a look, recognised the name and sent me an email :)

Hey all:hi:, not sure what Iam doing here but looking at some of the gatherings posted here and wanted to let you all know that I am having one on my roof as I usually do. We dont have anything fancy just people and roof and tonight snags. This is my first day on this site but I have been gathering people together for lunar get togethers for a while now. Happy viewing and I hope you get some great shots with your equipment, look forward to seeing some.:)

I was at the ASV public event with my C11 (and first light!). There were about 20 scopes set up, at one time my wife counted 35 people in the queue to look through mine with similar numbers at many of the other scope plus a number of people just standing around, so I would estimate we had at least 300 people there at the peak.
The early stages were clouded out, so I kept "my queue" entertained by swinging the scope around to the city and zoomed in on the Medina Hotel...couldn't see anything interesting though :(
Then the cloud started to lift and I swung back. Unfortunately with the XW-30 the Moon almost completely filled the view, causing some people to remark "I can't see anything" so I moved it slightly off centre to make the edge and a couple of stars visible.
I think everyone who attended had a great time and although we were there for 4 hours the time seemed to pass very quickly. The laser came in handy pointing out Jupiter, the shape of Scorpius and how to use the pointers and Crux to find south. Perry of course did a wonderful job keeping the crowd informed. If the sky had been clear from the start I think we would have had a couple of hundred more. The 20 scopes we did have was barely adequate for the number of people, even 30 would have still left very long queues!
