Hi All.

I know i do things a bit different than the general main stream, however i thought you may be interested in the way i focus for auto focus lens.

I am only refering to the Canon range of lens here, as that is all i use, but thought you may find this interesting as I'm sure many of you use the Canon Lenses
I use the custom functions in the 5D, and have only the center focusing square operational, which is red, and the focus sound can be heard when the shutter is pressed half way on the TC-80N3 Remote.

If i want to focus on an object which is not visible to me, I first find a reasonably bright star close by, guide the star to the center of the red square , while i press half way on the remote, when in the right spot the lens will focus in auto mode and the sound of focusing will be heard.

At this point i sync the star with the Gemini had controller and there you have it, switch the lens back to manual, and focus is set, this can be done with a lens up to about F/5.6.

I usually refocus at each One degree drop in temp, and i must point out that i also use a Canon Angle Finder attached to the 5D, that certainly makes life easier.

However an interesting thing happened. last night, I went through the procedure mention, and found my star to focus on, and was going to slew to the object to image.

For some strange reason i forgot to slew the scope, and the lens was still on the focusing star, and pressed the remote to take it's 10 images, then found that it was auto focusing itself for each image, because it was still in the red square of the focus screen, and that was at F/4.0

So, if only using reasonably fast lenses, up to F/5.6 and from 28mm to 450mm there is no need for focusing software, because it works every time and is always spot on.

Cheers Leon

Hi Leon,
Thank you for this post, as a new and proud Canon user, I found it potentionally very interesting ..
To be able to use other lenses with Canon EOS ( I have a few Russian and Zeiss lenses, all of them very good performers for 24x36 mmm film photography)) I am thinking about this:

or this (which is the same thing)

Hi Leon,
I do things similar to you in most of this, but I can never get it to focus spot on with any of my lenses. with a crescent moon or more there is no probs but just on a star or even venus its always out. Maybe the 5d does a better job of it or that my camera has been modded but I always have to tweak the lense closer to the infinity mark after using autofocus on a star..
Go-figure..?
cheers

I think it is due to a fact that focus circuit is not using the main sensor.. and if mirror is slightly out, you have a problem.
In old film days, I had to re-adjust my Practica mirror position, to achieve good focusing (I have build a special microscope for this purpose, to be able to monitor the image in the focal plane (where film was supposed to be) and the image on the screen. After mirror position adjustment, I applied the shelack solution to fix the mirror lower position (I did not have the access to locktight or anything similar then, and super glue I considered dangerous to internals of the camera because of evaporations).

So, it seems that third-party focus software that uses downloaded images is the only way to go if the camera itself is not accurately mechanically adjusted.... It is a pity there is no any freeware for canon as it seems it is the case at the moment...

bojan, i have never actually seen those adapters for the screw mount conversion, to EOS Canon, looks like a very handy piece of equipment.
But as i mentioned earlier, i have never used other lenses, for this type of focusing, so i would be running blind here.

I have recently purchased a 350D and I got one of the m42 / EOS adapters from eBay for about $20 delivered. Works fine. I did not get the style that allows autofocus to work, they were about $60.
All my Super Takumar lenses now fit the 350D giving me a wide range of views to play with...

cheers
Mark

That's a good start Mark those Takumar Lenses are pretty good stuff, too.
