View Full Version here: : Jupiter & Io in some excellent conditions (10th Nov)

Well I've been complaining about the sky conditions in Sydney and now I've had 2 excellent nights in the space of a week :P. My latest set comes from 10th November and after a very brief visual session (even Saturn looks superb down at 30degrees!!) decided to go all out with some imaging. At the start of the session I thought 80% laptop battery and 170GB HDD space would be ample - little did I know I'd run out of both...

I've been playing with Winjupos and finally been able to work out how to extend my data and now starting to really appreciate it. I'm not gunna lie, it took me a long time but finally after trying plenty of different options, mixing different sets and then even adding some IR685 data into the mix, I was really happy to get an output that I could do some extra sharpening in Registax. Frustratingly, adding the IR data really smashed the colour and retained some ghosting around Io so I needed to fix that and ended up using PI & GIMP for saturation, clone stamp and some noise removal.

This is the first half of the night - comprising of a total of 27 captures and 75min of data. The second half was not as good conditions but has the GRS swinging around into view so will be worth the effort as soon as I can find the time.

Also did a rather rough compilation of the data into an animation with Pipp (https://storage.googleapis.com/dso-browser.com/astrophotography/picture-947043eac38e718b31591a118df15ed9-original.gif) - but without the final processing that the single image received...

Details:
c14 non edge
eq8
asi178mm (IR685 filter) 6x 90sec captures
asi462mc (UV/IR filter) 21x 90sec captures
ASICAP
AS!3
Registax6
Winjupos
GIMP

Thanks for dropping by!

nice one David, yes hard to get the edges right with winJupos. Animation looks great!

Hi Dave
Glad I dropped by, the image is great and the animation is more than really nice too.
Did manage to see the transit on Friday evening and get some avi as well but haven't processed yet, as was away for the weekend

Oh wow! That is an awesome capture! Thank you for sharing.
I don't think I've seen Io in such detail before. Brilliant capture and processing!

You're right 10th November was great seeing in Sydney. Sadly I had plans with the family I could not get out of. Always another day I guess :)

Cheers Russell- yeah that’s the trade off with derotating data I guess. Once I’ve processed the rest of the data I’ll re-stack it all and I reckon the extra data will fill in the edges a bit…

Thanks Jeff- yeah can’t wait to see what you captured! My data between 12-3am was defiantly not as good. Seems to be the trend at my place the seeing really goes downhill after midnight but because the ‘baseline’ conditions were well above average on the night it’ll be worth the effort I reckon

Thanks Ahmed, that’s a shame cause it was a beautiful night- best of the year for me at least. Once I’lve processed the rest of the data I’ll rework the final stack and I’m hoping I can get the colour balance a bit better and may even do some masked processing of Io and Ganymede

Amazing image! It has a real 3D stereoscope-like effect.

Thanks Craig! I was really happy with the detail that I could get on this one - I'm working on some more images and a longer animation from the night too but jeez it's a lot of work lol

Looks like the seeing was exceptional.

Deft processing without being overprocessed. Excellent :2thumbs:

Dave,
Great work and super image
Your big rig together with stable conditions certainly has paid off
I was out last night adding some more data to NGC 2070 , seeing was excellent around 12.30am even with humidity up at 85%
I must have a whirl at Jupiter before it’s too late , again haven’t image the gas giant in years
Cheers
Martin

Thanks Richard/Martin. Thanks for your kind words. It’s a funny thing tho about astrophotography the more you look at your own image the more you start to critique it and I’m reworking the data (along with much more from the night) and preferring a bit more subtle processing and colour lol. Still really happy with being able to get a such a good night this far from opposition!
