The LCD on my older Sony VAIO laptop has gone on the blink, literally!
The local repair shop, wants $500 to replace the screen, which is probably what the machine is worth. It was a good machine to take outside with the telescope and still works well with a local monitor ( now a pain in the a...)
Anyone know of a repairer in Melbourne would may be able to do something for me for less than $250????
You are going to have not much luck finding a repairer that can do it for less than $250.
They just replace the lcd screen and that will be well over $250.
What is the model number of the laptop?
You can buy the screen online for about $140 + postage from america ($$$$$).
There could also be some screens on ebay for cheap.

Is the screen dead or is the backlight dead. If its a backlight, turn it on, let it boot and hold the screen at an angle (move it around somewhat) to some bright light to see if you can see dark icons etc on the screen.
Most Laptop LCDs die because of backlight. When its a backlight problem the computer still works ok and you can see very faint images on the screen.
The backlight has 2 major components: a cold cathode tube (similar to a very thin very bright fluro tube); and an inverter powersupply to supply the cold cathode with high voltage.
Either can be replaced by yourself but you have to diagnose if it is a backlight problem 1st.
Post back and tell us if it is.

I ave a sony vaio that the screen cracked on. Looked everywhere for a new screen, ebay etc but couldn't get one for less than $250 (for my model anyway)
I now put it outside and connect it to my mount and cameras etc and control it from PC inside using VNC remote on wireless network .
works pretty well but obviously no good if you don't have network or you want to use it in the field.
If thats the case better to get second hand laptop, look on ebay will be as cheap as a new screen
