Well I have to share my Laptop crash experience with you guys as it's been driving me nuts all week but received some good news at least today that it's "fixable" and it will be better and faster than before be it costing me $300!

So...took some great images of Jove last Friday night, and did some minor processing just using Registax early Sat morning. Normally I process each of my AVI's by opening a seperate Registax Window and then I compare each AVI in Registax before selecting the best one and splitting into RGB in AVI RAW and going to Astra Image.

The avi's appeared to be some of the best of Jove I had captured!

After doing this for all 4 of I left them all open and closed the laptop cover to put the machine in standby mode. This was at 7.30am. Took off for a great day of rock climbing and got back all excited at 6pm only to find the laptop beeping like crazy and programs and windows opening all over the place!

No amount of key strokes or control alt del's made a difference so decided to do the dreaded "turn off" which did not work!.... so took the battery out. Then tried to restart the unit but got the message that Windows had not shut down correctly. Ok I thought, easy, will start it in Safe mode. No good! kept going back to the same message with a blue screen message flashing in between! Trouble I thought. This aint looking good. Then figured how to get it to start by first looking for a CD recovery/boot disk rather tha going to the HDD. Nope....no good! After about a dozen times I gave up.

So, into the laptop doctor......after 4 days have informed me that the problem was caused by bad sectors on the HDD and they recommended a replacement HDD.

Being only less than 2 years old very dissapoined. So will be upgrading to a faster HDD with 40 more gig and faster ($160), will get all my data back inc. all my e-mails and hopefully all my Jove AVI's ($35 for data recovery), latest virus protection stuff ($50) and the service fee ($65) and hope to be back on Jove Sunday (get it back Saturday afternoon)!

p.s. Lastly, I have found that the laptop can get very very hot underneath. The guy in the PC store recons that this can be because the computer is charging the battery. The battery I have lasts about 1 hour now after 2 years (half of what it use to do). Just wondering if there is a smarter way to manage the heat that this laptop is generating and if this related to battery charging at all?

Well the saga continues.....picked up my laptop, although in theory it works I still get an error message and it's as slow as a turtle!

Back to the laptop doctor tommorow and hopefully it will not be costing me any more $'s! PC problems can be very very frustrating!!
