After getting the new D40 I thought that I'd chase down a ML-L3 remote shutter device for it so that I could set off the bulb function remotely so tha camera shake was negated.

I couldn't find one to be had - all the local camera shops are out. Dang!

Anyway - I downloaded a TV remote control program for my JasJam phone (Windows Mobile) called NoviiRemote and a profile that a bloke has written to emulate the Nikon ML-L3 remote control device via the irDA port. I figure that I always have my phone on me, so...

NoviiRemote: http://www.novii.tv/pocketpc/classic/

Nikon profile: http://natemc.com/phreakysoft/NoviiNikon.zip (his webpage is at: http://natemc.com/nikontriggerppc.php#nevo

There is a Palm version too if you want. If you get adventurous, the HEX for the signal is:

0000 0069 0005 0000 004B 0447 0014 003C 0014 008C 000F 09C4 0050 0000

Works like a charm. I've assigned the function to the big "select" button on the front, so when I point the phone at my camera and hit the button I hear "Click"! I wait a while..... and point again - "Click" - it shuts the shutter.

Very noice :)

I gather that there are plenty of other profiles that might suit a Canon as well.

Cheers
Chris

ohhh that's nice! Very cool and geeky :D

Next time I want a cable release for my pentax SP1000 I should go build a solenoid (or some sort of mechanical movement operated by electrical current) and buy a PDA
