Hi Guys,

I know we have been here before and there may not be anymore suggestions after the ones you have all suggested but i need a fix for this. Sorry in advance.:)

It was pretty good of late and now it is doing imore often.

This is Win 8.1 and is only a brand new build of some 6 months.

So other than a total re-install anymore suggestions, maybe :shrug:

Hi Leon,

When I have received that message it has been overwhelmingly due to MS choosing to take over the video card drivers.

I would check under Systems > Display > Advanced option > Display adaptor properties > Properties > Driver Tab - Driver Details - check to see the "Driver Provider" is actually AMD or Nvidia as per your video card.

You may also want to check your video cards website to check your running the latest version of the cards software.

Ps. Also under Display > Advanced display settings, check to see the monitor is set correctly, ie Display1: S24B370 and not a generic PnP.

Thanks indeed, yes i have heard that drivers can cause an issue.

Hi Steve the Driver Provider is actually Microsoft, and the Monitor is set with Generic PnP.

If this needs changing how do I go about this or should I just leave it alone, I am no Computer expert Steve. :shrug:

Hi Leon,

Change it or leave it alone, its up to you. Its not going to cause the PC to blow up or anything drastic*.

If you don't...
Generic video drivers - You will get that system crash from time to time.

The generic PnP setting - the colour palette and rendering speeds might be less than optimum. The colour etc will be good, but not as good as it could be if the PC knew the monitor in use.

How to change...
The screens you need to change everything are pretty much the same ones you used to check the drivers and monitors.

The PC has just suffered from MS updates and their zero care factor for user settings. I would guess everything is still there, just not selected. The monitor and drivers etc should be within a drop down lists within those screens and its just a matter of reselecting them.

A matter of a couple of clicks, rather than reinstalling everything from scratch. However I have no idea about windows 8.1 and the last time I was paid to do that sort of thing, I think Bill Clinton was still in power... And while I'm happy to muck around with my PC, I'm less than keen to try via mail on someone's else new and shiny PC with my antiquated knowledge.**

The trouble shooting seems to be done, I'm sure others more up-to-date than myself will be able to point you in the right direction to make the switch back to the correct hardware settings for Window 8.1. Or the interweb will have instructions, now we know the problem it should be easy to source some instructions for changing Monitor settings/drivers for your operating system.

Ok, Steve thank you for your suggestions, I have removed a couple of USB drives from the Computer as these used to show up each time on start up, and were connected full time.
Not saying this is a fix, however since then things seem normal but only time will tell.

Not sure about the use of the USB sticks, if they contain a operating system on them or not. Within CMOS you can set the boot sequence, normally SSD/HD/USB/CD etc, that should insure that you boot from the SSD every time unless it fails to read. Then the PC will try the other bootable devices as listed.

Make a note of when you get system crashes, either after an application such as Excel has been used recently or 4k video's on YT, PC left on for days without a restart, MS updates etc.

You might see a trend forming about the crash and that might get you a solution as well.

Ive run Win 8.1 on my home admin PC ( non Astro ) since 2016
Microsoft sent a warning last week that this version is no longer being supported ( so basically on your own )
I’ll probably reluctantly upgrade to Win 11

I run Win 10 on both Astro laptops, no issues at all

Leon, sorry mate I think that you are wasting your time asking for suggestions on how to fix W8.1. Save yourself the grief and upgrade to W10 at a minimum otherwise you are just running around chasing your tail.

Thanks Simon, I have been told that, and there is probably cause to do so, but i do like Win8.1 and a bit set in my ways at my age i suppose.

So when Microsoft ceases support for Win 8 early next year does that mean they wont be needing reports on computer crashes, which might mean that this stuff will cease, No--Yes:shrug: :lol:
