G'Day,
Has anybody tried this http://free.download.earth.googlepages.com/au-google-earth?gclid=CKKy-oncgIwCFRhqYAodTxkRyA
It's absolutely amazing,I was able to see my house including garage, cabin in Woy Woy,also went to my town of birth Belfast Nth Ireland and Dublin, the detail is out of this world. Reminded me of the movie "Enemy of the State" I suppose it also a bit scary,if we can see this what can the Authorities see.anyway it's worth having on your computer, for going on trips around Australia etc:BTW give it a bit of time when you zoom in or out, wait until it updates for more detail.
Cheers
Arthur

Yes Arthur I've used it and it's an amazing application.
It's been discussed on here a few times.

yeh it sure is. I showed my parents for the first time on the weekend.. showed them their property/house at Bellingen, my house at Wyoming.

Will even be able to see where my brother is living/working on Ko Samui in Thailand, but haven't done so yet.

Also useful if you overlay light pollution maps :)

Where do you get the light pollution maps from, thanks.

http://www.lightpollution.it/worldatlas/pages/fig1.htm has all the light pollution maps, covering the whole world (hard to overlay) or for regions (like australia). I think I overlayed the oceania map which is a small download of 1.2Mb that extracts into a 280Mb TIFF.

Here is a better capture showing night sky brightness with several popular AEST observing sites included:

the cbd area of Sydney has even higher resolution than the normal maps. Check out the area around Darling harbour and some of the eastern beaches...

I have the LP map of Victoria, and the Google Earth Map of Victoria.

Now, how do I make Layers in Photoshop?

Check the patch of light in the Bass Strait off Gippsland! Must be the oil and gas fields - but that's a lot of light!!

If you have downloaded and installed the free google earth application, you can overlay the light pollution map straight into google earth:

*Save the picture you want to overlay (LP maps linked earlier in this thread)

*Open google earth and move the google earth map over Australia/New Zealand, whichever is relevant for the overlay map you are pasting

*Click 'Add > Image overlay'

*In name field write 'Light Pollution', and click browse at the end of the 'Link' field. Browse to the .jpg file of the light pollution that you saved in step 1. Move the 'Transperancy' Bar to halfway between clear and opaque.

*To line up the picture, you can move the overlay by dragging it in the centre green box on your google map. You can adjust the size and line it up properly by dragging the four corners. Adjust it so that it lines up nicely.
Refer to this image for what it should look like: http://img180.imageshack.us/img180/8421/step1rw0.jpg
*Click OK and Voala!

For those that don't have google earth installed it can be downloaded for free from http://earth.google.com/
