Roll off Roof obs for under $700

Here's my budget Roll off Roof observatory. Nothing flash and I'm certainly no builder but it does the job..

I used this shed from Vidaxl (https://www.vidaxl.com.au/e/vidaxl-garden-shed-grey-195x198x159-cm-galvanised-steel/8719883811048.html) which was $356 delivered. I followed the instructions to get the main structure together, walls, doors, then just made it up as I went with a few sketches of what I had in mind for the roof.

I was inspired by Peter's (pmrid) shed in this thread (https://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=197466).

Hope I haven't broken some forum rule by putting those links in.

Thanks for posting that, Mark. One day, when I have a block of land, there will be an observatory.... In the meantime I will look at everyone else's builds and make plans.

wow thats very simple neat and tidy, how did you get the walls not to wobble?.

Wall wobble? I can process that out of images :lol: There is some flex as the top and bottom bars that make up each side of the shed are in two pieces rather than one. I did reinforce those joins somewhat and it hasn't proven to be an issue, so far.

Also fairly portable if you ever need to move it.

What's the wind like there? I lost a small shed to high winds a few years ago.
What didn't blow away was horribly twisted.

I don't want to think about wind, there's only so much you can ward for. While we do get 100km wind gusts here when the roaring 40's blast out of the Southern Ocean we have a dense tree line on that side of the property that mitigates a lot of it. Fingers crossed.

Looks pretty good. I do suggest bracing the corners of the roof, in a similar way that you have done the vertical supports for the rolled off roof. In the long run, this will help keep the timber roof frame squared up.


FYI I had my last shed go visiting the neighbors during a high wind!

Well done. It looks like a neat solution. As insurance against any possible wind you may wish to consider bolting it to the concrete with some dynabolts, Chemset or Loxins, if you haven't already done so.

Mark you could also consider some 15-20mm thick foilboard or similar insulation and well as some rubber gym tiles or carpet/rug and some bracing for the external timber frame - even timber on edge as a sort of bottom plate.
