Hi jossupp, welcome to the forum! :welcome: :gday:
I haven't heard of the alaris webcam, I just bought the ToUcam last week and am currently coming to terms with how to get the best results out of it with my 10" dob. I've seen some amazing results taken with the ToUcam, it's clearly the webcam of choice for amateur astrophotographers on a budget.. it's got a good light-sensitive CCD chip and is relatively inexpensive. It can't do long-exposures, but you can mod it to do so, or maybe you can look at the ATIK range of webcams that are basically a modified ToUcam that allows you to do long exposures.
I bought my ToUcam from Telescopes & Astronomy (http://www.telescopes-astronomy.com.au). They're on sale at the moment, so it's a good time to pick one up. They're based in Australia, but he does ship overseas.
Good luck and hope to see you back here some more!
Saw this post on the Universe Today forum... might be of use to some of you into astrophotography. It's not to bad, some good ideas and tips , anyway, just thought I'd pass it on.
