Lately, I am finding my Windows10 systems have marked my folders Read Only so that when I try to run an app that needs to create some intermdiate files - such as DeepSky Stacker - I get error messages to that effect. But if I copy the data to a USB or SD card and continue the operation from that location,, no problems.
More confusing is if I enter the Folder Properties and unmark the Read Only tab, it reinstates it immediately. Nver seen this before.

Peter, have you tried running the programs “As Administrator”.

Hi Phil, yes, I have. And it doesn't alter its behaviour. I am wondering whether it is some sort of anti-ransomware thing installed by my AVG anti-virus software - whereby an invader is denied any access to the data other than read-only. Has anyone heard of this sort of thing I wonder?

Check your anti virus. I've had weird issues in the past with AV "smart" features taking on what you can modify/run or not. Once I couldn't run executables from a mapped drive. That got me scratching my head for months until I saw a post on a forum saying "You wouldn't happen to use XXXX AV by any chance would you?" ... and bingo.
