Switched to Linux on the desktop - astro software choices?

Hi all,

I've finally put together my first linux pc. amd 5950x and a 6900xt running the latest xubuntu (needed that to get the amd 6xxx series gpu support - originally went for Zorin os but it was using an older kernel).

Just wondering if anyone had any useful linux software i could check out for editing (deep sky and planetary).

I had been using, DSS / CS6, registax, registar, autostakkert predominantly for my uses.

I'm assuming the go is deep sky - pixinsight and GIMP (replace DSS/CS6) - not looking so much for the learning curve on pixinsight but it was on the list to do - i've got a license).

Planetary? i guess Autostakkert with wine? according to the website
- AutoStakkert! is Windows only software. However, it does run fine using Wine under both Linux and macOS. As of yet there are no plans to make native versions for either of these operating systems.

Havent got my head around how to launch Wine just yet - install autostakkert thru lutris?

I have also set up a windows to go usb but only want to use that as sparingly as possible.

FireCapture works fine for planetary capture under linux - no wine.
You could try PlanetarySystemStacker - https://github.com/Rolf-Hempel/PlanetarySystemStacker for processing. Look over in Cloudy Nights - there are some good threads for this.

PixInsight does most of the processing I need - at least for deepsky.

I am in the same boat (Mint)..
So far I installed CdC (it requires internet access for additional files).

There is also Ubuntu Astronomy package (https://sourceforge.net/projects/ubuntu-astronomy-16-04/) (haven't tried, but will soon, bootable (by Rufus) from USB stick).

I have used Kstars Ecos on the Ubuntu laptop with success.
Does everything required including star finding , imaging, sequencing filters and controlling PHD for dithering . Also used on the raspberry clone. There must be some image editing software on the Indi / kstars user forums.
AStro pixel processor is good but have not tried it on Ubuntu yet.

thanks so much for all the replies and suggestions :thumbsup: that has given me plenty to work with. had quite a few issues getting PixInsight up and running but appears to be working. Also interesting on the capture side of things I hadn't really heard of capture options so that is handy too if(when) i decide to wipe windows from the lappy.

+1 for KStars. Is a really good package for image capture. Very powerful and it's free.
