Wi-fi connection

No doubt a stupid question but …


Is it possible to connect a laptop by wi-fi to two different devices simultaneously? e.g to a SynScan wi-fi adapter and a wi-fi-linked camera.


I know that there are solutions that use just one wi-fi connection e.g. Eagle 3, ASIAIR, etc but I wondered if there was a way of side-stepping them by getting the laptop to directly connect to two wi-fi devices.

Use a WiFi router to connect all the devices together. Just like how most homes use WiFi on the router hooked into the NBN etc. Or use your home WiFi network.

Not a silly question at all.

Hi David, yes that is correct.


You could even have the laptop on wi-fi too.


You need to make sure that all the IP addresses are on the same subnet so they can all 'see' each other. The assumption is you can set all the IP's on each device, or if DHCP is enabled for all of the devices, then that should be fine too. You are on the right track and a quick ping to each device from your laptop will let you know it's on the network.

Oh, the wi-fi router only needs to be a simple home network one.

First I'd look at the camera and the syn-scan to see how their network is setup, (I'm assuming the network setting can be seen/adjusted). Set them to DHCP if possible. Same with the laptop.

For the wireless devices, put in the wi-fi password and they should connect to the router and get an IP address. If all goes to plan then check each device to see what its IP address is, and you can use that to connect to the devices from the laptop through their software.



If one or more of the devices cannot be set to DHCP, then you will need to give them IP's. Make them on the same subnet as the routers local IP address. eg: If the Routers local (LAN) IP is = 192.168.1.1 then:



Camera IP = 192.168.1.2
Syn-scan IP = 192.168.1.3


The subnet mask should you need to put that in, would be: 255.255.255.0


You don't need a gateway unless you want internet access on one of the devices. If that's the case, use the local IP address of the router as the gateway address.
