Getting accurate focus sometimes is tricky using the LCD screen or electronic viewfinder. So I am interested in using a laptop to setup an EOS R mirrorless camera and also at the same time I can run the Polemaster I have.

What software is considered the best for controlling Canon cameras?

Backyard EOS is one I hear of a lot. Would you recommend it?

I also use a Sony A7riii but its probably expecting too much for some software to do Sony as well as Canon or is it?

I use BEOS and I find it excellent for what I need to do. Been using it for years.
It looks like your camera is supported so download the free trial and see for yourself.

Sounds the go. Do the free trial.

I guess also I could simply tether the camera to my laptop using the Canon apps for that as I don't want to use it for DSO imaging at this stage although I might but more for focusing. An ipad might be good for that too.

BEOS has features in it to help with focusing. The usual FHWM and some zoom functions.

Good luck Greg and have some fun.

Yep, go with BYE, great for DSO and planetary :)

I currently use APT Astrophotography Tool. It will allow me some upgrade to many higher-end cameras for the future.

You can use the free Canon EOS Utility which has a reasonable amount of functionality to get you going.

There is also the free Canon Connect on IOS in the Apple world which connects via BT I think.

Hi Greg,

Digicamcontrol supports a multitude of camera models from Canon, Nikon, and Sony. It has an astromode, scripting etc... It says it supports the EOS R and the A7rii. I suspect it would also extend to the Ra and A7riii, but the software is free so try it.

Here's a list of supported cameras. There is also an associated forum for discussion.
