This is my fourth.
But I was lucky to have Glen point out an add here in which Ralph from Tenterfield offered his 3.8 X 3.8 my roll off for sale.
Well a deal was done and it is being erected right now and hopefully complete tomorrow.
Here is a photo of the very start of erection.

Yes David it sure beats what I had in mind building a log cabin.
I need to abandon my do it yourself attitude.
And David when I create the park you can have a rent free place to put a remote observatory if you wish with me as caretaker as after I get the city house rented I will be here full time. I have reached a deal such that others will do my shopping so soon I can get back to how it was years ago when I did this stuff all the time.

And good news to boot I think I have the EQ 6 jiggled enough to get it polar aligned so on the positive I have placed the 115 mm on it hopefully to get it all working later.

It is a good size Alex. Plenty of room for all your gear. Did you get a pier footing poured before the floor was done? I noticed the hole in the floor in the earlier shot.

No pier or even a hole..and I don't plan to dig a hole even...Glen I am so damn clever I worked out that I don't need a hole..my current plan is to drive in some long star pickets maybe eight with two thirds in the ground and one third above ground...then I will drop rocks on them and let them spread under the floor when I have a big rock pile I will pour cement over them to consolidate rock and star pickets ..at the top add some form work to bring to neatly to the floor..I think I can get maybe a ton and a half mass on top of the ground with star picket fingers holding onto the planet.
I plan to name the observatory The Glen Observatory in recognition of all the help and support you have given me on my return to astrophotography.
There will be a name plate front and rear...I will become Alex of the Glen...I hope you approve...please say if you dont.
Ralp is such a decent man...he even bought some cement blocks and cement squares to provide me with stairs..but I do have plan for a ramp in time.

Alex, you don't owe me anything, happy to help out where I can. I do agree the observatories should have a name. In original Scotish use a Glen is a secluded narrow valley, and a Dale is a depression between hills. Maybe they do work for you.
I understand your pier intentions now, thanks for explaining, it sounds substantial.

All complete... thanks to Glen for alerting me to the wonderful opportunity relatively close to home..and the vendor Ralf and his lovely wife Penny for their kindness and hospitality thrown in with the purchase and Dennis for applying his skills as an ex builder re erecting the observatory with Ralf.
I am very happy and like this idea of having others do stuff I can no longer do really. And an extra bundle of thanks to Penny for insisting Ralf put in some stairs for me..apparently with materials ear marked for his next pier.

No fifty for me. But I am having trouble deciding what scope to get..this all came about because I wanted a 16 inch which I have decided against...I cantfind anything out there to give any idea how good or bad they are..I ,today at least, am back to a 10 inch with the flash carbon fiber rods ..heck carbon fiber it must be good... or the more expensive 150 Espirit...but I will just do what I want to do to this new building...cement around the legs and pier foundations as I said...and I was just thinking now it really needs it's own power set up...I have some neat flooring to go in..maybe some lining, and I need to give thought to motorising the roof...mmm yes I better think about how to do that..take my mind off astronomy for a while.

Hi Alex, I grabbed myself a Williams optics flt-132 which I’m really happy with. They’re reasonable priced and I think they are very undervalued for what they can do and the quality its of the build.
I was thinking Tak originally however haven’t looked back since grabbing the flt132 and now wouldn’t get rid of it for any upgrade.
One to put in the mix for you I think.
Check out any of my images from the last years or two and you can see what it can do in a beginners hands.

.....also it’s light enough for an eq6 which is a bonus.

You can never have too many scopes.

So I now have 6 star pickets, another four bags of concrete, a driver thingy to drive in the star pickets and a block splitter of my own rather than borrow from the girls at the main house where they live..not me.
I picked up another solar panel like the little one for the double observatory, lots of 12 volt wire and hope to use the batteries I replaced in the van for something..they don't hold much it seems but if nothing else they can do the lighting as I have three neat led strips that can in the van that will be happy running off that set up...but I suspect another lot like the ones I got for the van will be needed for the new observatory when I set up a desk top in there...but no work today I feel crook from all the running around yesterday...that is a pity as it is raining on and off and I could burnt off some stuff but I just can't do it.

Getting the rocks will be a huge job for me, I have a good supply all piled up near the house but I will need at least a ton, maybe two, so that could be four trips, load unload place in position add concrete. It's like getting a house at lock up stage or the hull and deck of a boat and you think there's a few things to add but it is near done..it's not.
So been laying down waiting for me to be able to move and with the hints of Sun recharge the batteries...The genny key start won't work, and it's not it's battery, and I just can't pull start it today..other days yes...I just want to make a cuppa but it is too much effort..lucky had a long life milk handy so I can keep hydrated...

And I have piled up grass clippings and lots of ash and some top soil for a little garden which will give me an interest.

My neighbour called by and tested the new panel knowing they have a particular problem and I have to take it back to Lismore tomorrow..but on Friday he is going to sort out the 12 volt system in the van so I can use the light..flash eh.
I am feeling better just pulled up about 30 minutes before he arrived so was able to get around.
The cement will have to stay in the car for now I think.
My neighbour is a member here..so that makes it 5 members that I have seen in person.
I am so happy given it has only been a year working on all this...I could have copped out but it is amazing g what you can get done just chipping away..next ..bring down the rain water tank so I have my own supply here.
Thanks for the interest guys and believe me I appreciate the feed back, support and advice.

Yes I will put in shower toilet facilities...one shower one toilet.

Purchased a 4wd winch to motorise the roll off roof and pulled the trigger on the 16 inch and eq8 today, seems both units are available so going to Sydney tomorrow or next day...and work out if the stuff can fit in the car, pay the bill etc. Could not buy the motor lift winch today but they should have one by my return...if not I will have to make something as I can't lift a 16inch onto the mount safely ...I got some stuff laying around that I could make a lifting device but that is time...
The excavator guy came as he promised and he will do the clearing in three weeks and may be put in a fish pond if the clearing gets done faster than we have allowed for in the quote.
I will feel a little safer next bushfire that's for sure.

Everything from guitars to bikes to cars have a sweet spot and I will find it and use it somehow.
I am thinking to run it visual first up..my last three scopes I have never looked thru..
Just been thinking of the work not the pay off... my expectations are really low so the only way is up hopefully.
Then some photos unguided then a focuser at half the price of the scope and oag I guess...not sure about which camera yet.
I still have to bring in two ton of rock for a pier, desks, bed, kitchenette...but I find these projects force me to stay alive.
Then a Caterham and a winch to get in it...after that I will settle down and start another family.

I purchased a cheap 4wd winch to use to motorise the roll off roof but I can not as yet work out how to run cables and I am thinking to get a second one..a motor for each side, overkill power wise but takes worrying about cables out of things.
Changed my mind again re scope...the FL on the 16 inch worries me greatly so today I am thinking 12 inch which with a focal reducer should be much less of a worry. But I think a 12 inch on an eq8 should be ok.. what I am trying to get my head around is if it works ok one should get another focuser which is almost the price of the scope:eyepop: It's getting out of hand really..but I think my current camera may be ok...anyways it's all so close to completion I need to start thinking about the next project.
The good news is, although it may be my imagination, is my legs seem a little better...the other day I was able to reach my feet and put on boots with laces so maybe the work is helping me get a little better..but I still plan to put in ramps for the van and the observatory for my wheelchair as I expect I will need such luxury...mmm maybe another two winch motors so I can use one to drag the wheelchair up the ramp.actually another for the winch to lower me into the Caterham sports car..they seem to have doubled in price since I thought of buying one..I am getting so slack these days but the ramps and motorised stuff is past a luxury thing...almost a necessity...so why not.

Alex, what sort of track system does your roll off roof have? I am sure that collectively the other observatory builders here can provide some advice on motor drive solutions.

xelasnave
15-07-2020, 12:37 PM
There are two wheels each side and you need to push one side and then the other. It needs to be pulled from the middle and that leads to cables hanging over the scope as I see it. Maybe adding drive wheels with two motors...it just surprised me that it is not as simple as I expected..mind you I just did not think but thought having the winch it would be simple..not so at this point.

I will think more and maybe start a thread seeking suggestions.
I am going up to morrow so I may post photos etc.

Alex

glend
15-07-2020, 01:03 PM
Hmm, sort of sounds like it might not be running square, if you need to push one side then the other. If the track is true on both sides it should just roll, but i suppose its much heavier than mine. Is the roof frame braced so it doesn't rack when pushed on one side? Yeah, a photo would help.

xelasnave
15-07-2020, 08:52 PM
It's square well both are but with the small one which has eight wheels each side it goes to the side and then it rubs and gets hard so you push the other side..and I expect that is what is happening with the big one...both just start to rub against the section that guides them...I need to look at it which strangely I haven't done in the context of a real good investigation...I have been more interested in adding pads to the piers ...and burning as much fuel as possible to minimize the fire hazard...so much to do ...I mentioned a tree fell on my fire pump so I had to get it pull ed from under the tree disconnect all the pipes that took me ages to set up so the earth mover can get the rest of the tree out of the dam..all that was a major set back..plus Dad passing left me flat, then the virus I found on top demotivating..and I have not been able to see if the pump still works..it should...Anyways I am getting there, soon I won't have to come to Sydney..I lose three days a month driving and up to double that in recovery time..those trips knock me around you know..where eve4 I arrive I need time to set up again..and that is just stocking food opening of closing stuff and the astro gear I take out of the observatory, break down put away...so so much time is wasted...the only reason I have not made a decent observatory is I did not even know where I would finally live..I can not go back to the old place because of you know why and I cant live in the house I got for the girls...and the neat shack is high on the hill so I struck it off after the main house was hit by lightning..I have been hit once and I did not enjoy it...but I can see light at the end of the tunnel...like half my months go on everything but astronomy but soon I will be full time like in the old days.

I am going to pull back on selecting a new scope and mount and concentrate on finishing off this roll off.
The land clearing guy has not been in touch which is ok because I have been occupied in another's major project but today I slipped away and bought a second winch which should simplify the motorising aspect. I have linked up transport to get additional flooring to put down before I lay the timber plastic wood down...and to pick up materials to construct the ramp.
Hopefully I will get the winches etc installed soon and photos to show what progress has been made.
Alex

xelasnave

Put the winches together which although very simple was a time consuming process.
Checked both with a battery and was able to remove the cable and happily there is plenty to do the job. Dug out the swagging tool but now have to sourse the little things that it works on...clamp thingys..what are they called?

Worked out how to mount the winches and so excited to get on with it woke up at 3 am but could not find any 2 x 3 hardwood upon which I want to mount the winches so I have to wait until a reasonable time to go up to the house as there is plenty there.

My only concern is if the long power cord from the genny is too long as I don't want to have to lift the genny up into the roll off as for me that is a major effort requiring setting up the endless chain winch, but well if I have to...or tomorrow buy a decent cordless drill..I have two but they will not manage drilling steel.

I will be occupied elsewhere until Wednesday so I really want to get most of it done today..I just hope the drill works on the long lead as I usually plug it straight into the genny.

I measured the desks and it is touch and go and I won't know until the winch is set up as the cables may get in the way of where the desks are to go.

I have emailed re the Ioptron mount but still have not decided for sure..I flip between thinking built in guiding is a good idea or not , also I have a Pole master so that feature is not needed..but I will look at the prices for both models so I am a little better informed.

Moisture is going to be a real issue as the inside of the roof yesterday was dripping..there is a lot of open space between the roof and the walls which I need address...that's why the desks will be in like their own cupboard.

I will get a dehumidifier...I have some solar panels that are 36 volt from a grid set up and I think they could charge a 24 volt battery, not sure, but I think it is worth while giving the dehumidifier it's own power in effect .. Anyways shilling thinking about power solutions, I tend to have various set ups..like I have one that only runs the lights another for the fridge another to charge batteries for the observatory...The winches won't need much so they will get a d old 100 amp I will bring up from Sydney that has an old solar panel..the winches draw heaps but not for all that long..

The big problem the roll off seems to have become a storage area and that has got out of hand.,.piers are finished but no work on the pier..in fact I am thinking not to do anything there but run a tripod to get a feel for how high to make it.

Anyways I think I will put on my head lamp and see what I can do out there..gather up the rubbish and tools from yesterday's effort so as to have an uncluttered work area.
Make a list of things to buy tomorrow...might have to skip swagging so probably will use U bolts and ask my shipwright mate to post me the real deal. It's almost 5 am time to get up anyway.

U-bolts are a good idea, much simpler than swaging and can be moved if needed. Condensation is a real issue in higher/colder climates, my two small sheds suffer from it on cold clear nights and I have to keep covers over my lathe and sewing machines to stop them getting dripped on!!

Would having a small fan inside to circulate the air work? Shouldn't use much power.

After today's effort I certainly agree with you re U bolts.

After my earlier post I actually found the timber I needed and after much thinking started after lunch convinced I had thought everything thru, I went with screws, as I had some, I would like bolts but probably over kill.

Anyways I now have one side working, I had my daughter push on the side without a winch for balance and it works really terrific.

In the photos you will notice there are only a few turn on the drum which so far seems to be ok but I thought start small ... The cable going thru the leader box I placed outside of where you would be expect to see it to keep the cable on that side...it looks wrong but there is a good reason for that approach.

I will add something to put tension on the cable so I don't have to adjust it if it stretches as I expect it must and that system will keep appropriate tension in the cable to not slip on the drum.

I can't do more today, well I could but probably no point in pushing myself although everything is right to go on the other side all that I need do is thread the cable and screw the winch to the floor. The pulleys are screwed down already.

Moving the accumulated items temporarily stored is the main deterent.

Other than that have not done anything..oh I did assemble a little wheel barrow and moved a bit of soil to test it... I got the two wheel oldies one causeI can wheel it and still use a walking stick...

Looking at the observatory today I think I will line it and if possible make it as close to "air tight" as possible which means vermin proof etc but even if I get it air tight everything will still have covers...tied at the bottom...in the bush the mice like warm places and so do snakes who will come in after mice...

I may put in a heated floor using 19 mm Polly pipe and a solar collector I have the pipe and building a collector is not a big deal . ..but at least a couple of fans, a heater and a dehumidifier...the fans run via just a panel, I have two in the van, the heater can run when the Genny is on..give it some load as I don't like running it to just take off 10 amps to charge the batteries...and you run the Genny when it's wet and cloudy so not a problem..the dehumidifier via its own panel and battery plus run it when the Genny is going. Summer cooling..fans bring up cooler air from under which should work ok but maybe a little cool only air conditioner for killer hot days..

So it seems I will have a decent wait after I order whatever I order so I probably will set up the old eq6 and get a feel for the best lay out find what works what doesn't.

All good but next two days no astronomy so hopefully finish the motorisation totally on Wednesday or after.

After various interruptions I have just now completed the installation of the second winch. I have not tested it as I need a rest and another battery in place...so with 4000 lbs pulling power hopefully opening and closing the roof is a simple matter.
Next ...I want to place another layer of floor material ..probably form ply ..
Over and out.

If it were me I would go with an electric gate opener motor with gear rack, for a few hundred $, if you have power, but whatever the solution I would first ensure there is a nice smooth rolling/sliding action with the roof when just pushed/pulled by hand.

Thanks but I am invested in this approach and I am sure I can sort it out.
I have purchased some rubber mat that I will put around the drum ...of that does not work I bought some sash cord in case ...if neither of those work I will construct wood drums...if that does not work I will fasten the cable to the drum and put in points where I can switch between so as to have not slippage via just using the winch as intended.

I do want to get one of those auto gates as getting out of the car to open and close the gate is a big deal for me.

The only way I could get it work was to use the winch to wind on cable as they were designed to work..
It means I have to disconnect two hooks and relocate them for the return trip which is not what I wanted but ar least it now works.
I am ordering some 19 mm firm ply to cover the floor and that should arrive next week. The earth mover still has not started unfortunately.

Well after getting the winches working I removed them to add a 17 mm ply overlay floor, which was a great deal of work strangley as I had to cut the ply with a hand saw..so eight foot cuts took five goes with appropriate rests inbetween cuts...then I had to gather up the looklike timber floor from under a couple of tarps behind the small observatory and move the pieces into the roll off observatory for sorting and laying...a happy throw off was I cut the ply to form the wheel chair ramp, I dont really need it most times but one would not want to miss a clear night just because you couldnt walk...
The land clearing guy has not been able to get here yet so no progress on the park.

Alex,
Looks like its taking shape nicely - I sympathise with you on the hand sawing!
I'm a glutten for punishment and think its sometimes simpler doing it this way (but its not). There is no power to my obs yet so I'm too lazy to drag the power cable from the house - which leaves me three rusty saws to choose from - Ahh I only have myself to blame.

Good luck with yours - I'm sure it will be perfect.

Thanks Anth ..I have a flash cordless saw but it seems to wander cause I cant set the cut low enough... something is stuck...anyways lucky cause I bought a new hand saw at Bunnings just to have one at the van..a cheap one but it is excellent...the fake timber floor is going ok got seven done so far, no insulation or glue but I am thinking of nailing them both for strength or rather not have them creeping up and to give it a realistic look somewhat..and looking at the various piles I think I may have to buy a couple more boxes...so getting them free will end up costing afterall.
I plan to line with foam blocks which seems the easiest approach.
After laying the ply floor with no hole for a pier I have had second thoughts and will cut a hole in the ply ..I was going to go without a pier but how can you say no to moving 2 ton of rock and concrete.
Its looking clear here so maybe so astronomy tonight.
The road should be sealed in another 2 weeks and they have put in a fantastic drive way for me so all is going great.
Edit addition...going back into the van I found the perfect mold for the pier, an old fishing rod container....

Alex,
Re cable drives for the roof.
I haven't fitted a motor to mine (yet!) but just pull to open, pull to close.

The ends of the "cable" are fixed to the centre of the moving roof, one at either end.
The cable then goes over two pulleys mounted on the observatory wall and looped downwards.
Pulling one direction moves the roof back and pulling the other side of the loop "pushes" the roof back into place.
I was going to wrap the "loop" around a winch drum to power the set-up....
I can give you a quick sketch of the cable arrangement.
(My roof is 3 x 3 mtr)

Hi Ken
I could not sort out the cable such that it could fix to the centre of the roof easily so I went for two winches one on either side.

I wanted to go for around the drum system like a yacht winch but you need extrodinary tension and I could not achieve such even with additional springs..

No matter what I did I could not make the cable wrapped around the drum work with steel cable. I then tried sash cord to get traction and although it sortta worked the cord turned over on itself..I gave it much time but finally went for just dragging the roof via the winches with cable fixed on and winding onto the drum and moving the pulling point by having a pulley and a hook that I relocate...that works very well...two winches each capable of 2000 lbs...I have dedicated a 120 amp battery for the winches and a 120 watt solar panel...I am making an emergency block and takle more for amusement really and because I just love blocks and takle but if the battery should fail etc I have a block and tackle in place ... plus I plan to have a bench and will use it to move mounts to the bench for work...I can lift them now but one needs to be prepared in case one gets old.

Progress.
I am thinking to use that 8x4 sheet of ply for a little deck out the front as it would overlook the dam and be just a real nice place to sit day or night...great for photographing birds from it or doing some visual whilst inside is running.
I have nearly completed the ramp but I think I will pull it down and move it to run it off this little deck I have in mind..anyways I just now rounded up some hard wood to make the frame and piers and feel rather tired ..so I took time out for a visit here.

Early start 5 am to beat the heat. Had a great run and did not need the usual long rests and stopping was only to think things thru...although simple when you are doing it by yourself and not flash physically you need to plan ahead...like putting the deck up before the last side rail so it slides on flat rather that require major lifting.
Anyways had to share my efforts as I am really happy with how things are going.

OMG. This is amazing. Not to mention cutting a sheet of plywood with a hand saw. You will have time for a Microscope ? To show my unfamiliarity - the hole is for the post, for the Telescope? It needs mounting on concrete ? Where was your scope mounted previously, or at present ? How far from your residence is this?
I am in Awe over this whole thing.

I have more hours in my day than most folk so plenty of time for microscopes.

Yes the hole is for the post or as we say the pier. I have to gather about two ton of rock using my little car so it will take time to finish...but I have a pile of rock up at the main house ..I get it with shopping bags..a couple at a time..six months I will have my two ton...I have already moved a ton for other stuff here to date.
I will drive six or more star pickets into the ground leaving a foot out for each then add rocks and cement until a foot up then add in the tube and more rock and cement until it gets to floor level. Stay tunned I will post pictures.

Look at my thread further down "New observatory (simple)" to see where I house two mounts and scopes.

http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=175986

You will notice a caravan in that post somewhere..that is now my main residence...I was going to build a cottage but the caravan is great...I may buy a flash one later but I just dont have the time to shop at the moment...But maybe something a bit flash in time..I got this one from a lady for free because she heard how I helped someone...I have been thinking about a log cabin as I have the trees on the ground ..maybe but I just want all this finished and tidy..there is stuff everywhere..its not neat the way I like but I can only do the urgent things now. I have to rebuild my fire fighting set up as a tree fell on the pump and all the pipe has had to come out of the dam ..and the second pump drowned..so lots of work there.

Getting there, installed the hand rails which I really need, but best of all fastened the ramp to the deck structure ... Coming up with how to do it took time but I ended up with a simple but strong connection. Getting it in position took some effort and there were times I thought I would need help but it all worked well finally. The ply needs fastening plus some additional inserts but very happy as I was able to have a cuppa sitting on the deck while looking at the birds...it was well worth the effort.
I cant do anymore as I need a trip to Bunnings ...I have settled on buying foam to line it ...all I want is insulation and foam blocks I can stick on the ceiling easy..and the walls...I can add wood panelling later maybe...I best start getting the rocks and make the form work for the base ...maybe drive in the star pickets and see if they will go down as far as I want...maybe get another six.
Addition via edit.
I can not speak too highly about the little Ozitto cordless chain saw pictured. All the hardwood (its like steel) was cut with this wonderful little saw, I wont use it on the ply cause of chain oil getting on the surface that I want to paint...and I have cut firewood with it out of trees nine inch diameter...and I give up before the battery..one of the best products I have even purchased..I bought extra batteries and a charger..cant remember really but only $200 approx ..it was $110 but the other stuff took it to $200...I just can not believe that what looks like a toy performs so well.

Alex, how about a travelator instead of a ramp? A nice conveyor belt on rollers driven by one of your motors. Maybe a future upgrade.;)

I have the electric cord version of that Ozito chain saw, and it is indeed a useful tool. I went with the cord version because I find battery powered devices are unreliable over the years.

I like the belt idea...I don't even know if my wheel chair will fit as it is still in Sydney...but thinking it thru one won't be able to roll up that incline without some power assist..anyways I am thinking to put in a cot and a small bench for a stove and wash basin and live in the roll off...just use the van as a big cupboard.

Yes a power cord..what a luxury...a,though I do use them from the genny...actually I may get one with a cord you can't have to many cutting things...what gets me is I have not had to sharpen it yet..probably less stress but given the time that I have used it why it does not need sharpening is odd...but suits me...it would be good for butchering a cattle or a sheep..just put olive oil in the bar oil chamber...I remember butchering a sheep with a power saw once..inside..the mince meat was everywhere floor ceiling walls..did not notice until the job was done.

Been clear here but lots of dew..ordinarily I would have a go but because of the work I am asleep by eight ..up at 4-30 for a 5 am start you see.

When you think about the time I have on my hands please realise that it was hard won...in law I worked five and a half days a week and most days were from 8 am to 6 pm and in real estate often 7 days a week ...and in that game most days did not finish until 9 pm (own business that's what you do)..heck I can remember an appointment at 2-30 am ( had to be with wifey to receive call from husband re offer)...real estate is extremely demanding if you want to be the best).....:eyepop:

And at 73 years of age I think there is no need to be envious of my situation in the least.;) I know it sounds ideal living alone in a caravan with no running water and days where you stay in bed because you can not walk and cooking whatever you like for dinner or alternatively opting, cause you can, for breakfast cereal for dinner by reaching to the bed head and grabbing the cereal and long life milk that you had the sense to put there for those times where you just wanted to lay down all day.

And thank you for your interest...and please know that I tell my stories hopefully so others can say to themselves..."If that silly old half crippled mug can do it I guess that maybe I could build one myself"...

Thanks Glen..most timely the damn glue did not work and I have been wondering how to fix the situation. I went out and the foam had come away and the glue still wet...I am not sure it will take to the iron but I will wait until it dries.
The glue needs more time I think and I am doing a trial now ..but how to hold these foam blocks in place had me thinking.Your idea gives me an idea.I think some rope and some wood blocks may do it..hold it in place until it dries..I don't mind spending the money on glue if it works.

Thanks you again have helped me.

I was going to use contact adhesive which I thought should be good but the guy in Bunnings said with the heat of the iron it would not work and recommended this stuff I used...I reckon contact adhesive should work..anyways it's going up even if I have to screw it in place..just sent to irritate me is all..

I made sure the foam is well supported ..it can stay there for a couple of days ..heck if it does not hold after 48 hours there is something wrong and if so I will calmly explain that to Bunnings and ask for a refund.

I am doing so many small jobs but it is at the stage where you seem to work non stop and it just gets messier ( I wish I could get some messier objects but ...)...So I picked up the new mount ..eq6...yesterday and it is still in the back of the car unopenned ..when I stopped yesterday I was so tired I could not be bothered to get it out of the car even as excited as I was..I managed to open a can of soup heat it, eat it and fell asleep...today started at 5 am and been going with minimal rests which is great as although I am getting knocked up after a ten minute rest I can continue...sorted out the glue problem..first tried contact adhesive but it eats the foam dramatically... but the builders spray foam does the job...so far.

My daughter helped me get one load of rocks last week but I needed more so I have just got a load in shopping bags..way to go..great to get the rocks into the observatory near the "hole".

Trimmed the door to accommodate the new floor height and fitted it which I was so happy about cause it was heavy and troublesome but I hung it unassisted..had to make up some resin and tiling grout to fill after the cut as there were some holes but I sealed it perfect.mmm although working non stop I realised I had a hour or more on the new microscope whilst having lunch yesterday..it is so much fun..

I have dug a small hole where the pier will go and had to deconstruct some of the cement support for the support piers so as to keep them unattached to the cement for the mount pier.

So today after digging the hole and clearing generally..laying on my belly was the only way I could manage as when I got in the hole I could not sqwat..but was reasonably comfortable on my belly reaching down to place rocks and cement ...so I have laid two star pickets to make a cross laying on top of the ground encased in rocks and cement ... Probably not needed but why not..I have cemented all I can today but tomorrow should be able to fit the form work and drive in the star pickets that the cement will grab onto...I have been thinking to cast something in alluminium to go between the pier and the mount as the earth mover is bringing me a stump to put an anvil on and my forge will be set up in another day or so...I spoke to the guy at the tip and he said I could scrounge for scrap alluminium...Starizona have a unit but not cheap and really nothing I have seen yet looks as neat as I would like..I have not done it before but cant be too hard.

I was going to do the painting but the dust from all the clearing prevents that..the earth mover broke his thumb but started again the next day ... He has cut a track for me to the main house so I dont have to drive down the road now...they sealed the road yesterday and just now sealed the drive up to my gate.
Had the microscope apart and find it is rather flash as it has a second condensor in the base and what seems a polarising set up..I need a step down transformer as inspection suggests I an not do anything inside..the internals are jam packed due to the second condensor.
Lots more to report but too trivial.

I feel really great except for the legs on fire and I argue with them or me and say to myself..if you think pain can stop me your are very wrong..that really helps because by keeping going I win...I think keeping active and interested in projects and new hobbies keeps you healthy...but I have run out of hobbies.

What I did not mention..the earth mover cleared the park and did all I had in mind for the money I said we could spend but I still had a couple of days up my sleeve when I worked out the hours so I asked him to put in a little dam when I had in mind for the fish I mentioned in the earlier thread...wow this guy literally moves mountains, a real worker and so when I went to look I find I have a dam four times bigger than I was expecting..and well within the rules..but the girls have claimed it as their swimming hole...so maybe the sand needs to go there for the beach.

Went out to do the form work just now but it does not fit thru the hole so that is the first job in the morning ..then drive in the star pickets, position the form work, grab the pipe off the van for the pier form work cut it to suit..get more cement from town...and it should be finished by lunch time ...

Still haven't even got the new mount out of the car ..it will only be in the way really so ,lucky I was too tired to open it up.

Good night

I have been stuck in an apartment also ...and I spent many years where everything I did was for others so I feel happy a time has come where I get to do just for me.. I suggest you buy some cheap acres as soon as you can for that time when you retire.

One corner of the roll off will be the "biology department"

I have given some thought to melting alluminium particularly as today I found a stack of old alluminium solar panel mounting frames past their use by date...mmm need some scales to see if there is enough to do the job.

I will need to make a crucible..how big? It should be just big enough so I need to find out the volume of what it is that I will make...interesting how those little things one learnt in science now becomes useful..I have figured that out...I will ready some clay tomorrow and make form work for the pad that my forge can sit on...mmm need a leaf blower for bellows and start gathering cow manure for fuel....I recall Lord Rose made his big mirror using cow manure as fuel...burns real hot... should be interesting to see if I can do it.
But I need a clay crucible..I tried to melt some brass using a steel crucible and the cow manure I used was so hot it melted the steel.
Hmmmm also cut up the alluminium and work out the volume there as well.
But after seeing these videos of Indians making bowls using sand molds I think it is doable.
I can use the top of the tripod as a template but will have to fashion the rest using wood.
Probably make a few molds so mistakes don't stop me...if they are all good maybe someone here could use one.
I have thought to make it using resin...and instead of fibre glass use those stainless steel pads you use to clean pots and pans..that would be real strong I feel...lot easier..but I am hopeful I can pour one and more in alluminium.

Early to bed early to rise...when there are clouds.

Started a little after 5am and..finally got the mount and tripod out of the car into the rolloff, sorted the form work to fit thanks mostly to that excellent Ozito cordless chain saw, moved all the star pickets (6) inside, moved most of the rocks (sufficient leaving back ups were they were unloaded) to the doorway ready to drop in the form work, removed a little more of a pier footing to ensure building and Mount separation, managed to drive in one star picket ...started it with the block splitter then just sat down with a piece of rope on the pile driver and did bicep exercises ...slow but I could no longer get a swing at it and I wasnt going to do that on my belly.
Then I thought the neighbours may not like the noise and took a break for a cuppa and some internet.
Next see if the clay is wet enough to sort thru for rocks etc and make a crucible, and remove the pier mold currently the fishing rod holder on the van, and cut it to size...see if the cordless chain saw does plastic.

Clay is too moist after adding sawdust which was wet unfortunately so its out to dry out but there should be enough to make a crucible hopefully.

Star pickets are in but I held two back incase I cant get some 8 footers to go in the tube. I am going to Bunnings now to try for eight foot star pickets , cement and long bolts or threaded rod for the first connection point...cant pour concrete without them in place.

Getting the tube off the van took a lot of time as the fasteners were behind the gas bottles so I had to remove them first...and pulled the carby apart on the genny and put it back together but was too tired to pull the cord.. so I will try it later..not hopeful and did not have time to replace the plug...later..so now a nice relaxing drive to Lismore and maybe a sit down lunch to catch up on the missing meals of late...:thanx:.need rain all this earth work has created a dust nightmare.

Scored some more foam but forgot to get move builders foam.., new dam completed, crucible made, pier underway ..the photo here is to give an idea of the stages..it is now past this but I needed to take a rest just now and drink maybe even eat something, and forgot another photo...best news coming back to the van and not looking forward to how hot it would be, I tried the genny and it started third pull so my carb pull down did the trick...and I never got around to the spark plug which is usually the first thing I look at...and better still the air conditioner started working so it must have shut down because the genny wasnt supplying power before I shut it down days ago..so happy as to me the air conditioner is new..I have not used it much..

The earth mover cut a track right to the dam so the girls are happy...the pier is consuming an extraordinary amount of concrete..Today I have put in three bags which I thought with additional rocks would have it to the level where I would fit the pipe mold..honestly you just cant see where the 3 bags have gone..anyways there is already a huge mass..9 star pickets a lot of rocks and 3 bags of concrete..might nip into Tabulam and get more and try and get some progress happening. I work and work and there is still so much to do.

Making the crucible was fun and I tell you I am a clever little devil...first I fashioned basically a bowl and could not get a beaker shape, which was odd because I have made them in the past..but I folded the bowl and stuck most of the edges together ending up with a pointy affair open at one end like those ancient vessles they carried wine and olive oil around i..I bet that is how they made them..so intuitive.. but then I filled it with sawdust and was able to fashion a neat unit..added a handle so as to put a brach thru when pouring the molten alluminium.. I will leave the sawdust moist to slow the drying which usually minimises cracks...only took a little over an hour.

Had to take the advice Glen gave to have a rest day for today I did not feel well at all as I could hardley stand not because of legs but just seemed dizzy..anyways spent the time I was awake to think about the alluminium molding idea..first I looked on youtube and find folk melted in a tin can so making the crucible was unnecessary.
I worked late last night adding cement (another three bags) and rock at a modest pace and while resting openned up the new mount box and took a look at the tripod etc to figure out what to make..could be beyond my skill to be realistic...although I was rather tired so possibly a little negative..but it seems the same as my old eq6..I did not check...by this time I could not bring myself to open the small observatory and that was my first job today but I felt it prudent to lay down....however if I can use the pier attachment from the old mount I may just use it so I can finish the pier and start again on putting up the foam.

I am a little disappointed as I thought I could finish everything this weekend. Each job takes just so much more time when you start actually doing things..like the form work ..even though I made it up ready to go on the job I realised that if I did not rim a couple of inches I would not be able to remove it...and I ha e plans for that ply.
Maybe I can put in an hour or two after dark if I feel better.

Alex if your feeling dizzy that is a pretty good sign that your blood pressure maybe too low. Do you have a blood pressure monitor?

I feel so much better this morning. I feel relaxed. I think getting so many things done sent me into overdrive...I got many things done from a "business" point of view, got the park done, a new dam, new tracks, the road got sealed, the microscope arrived, the mount arrived, I bought stuff on the net, and I seemed to be able to work all day and night like once I could...and had time to really help someone with advice...so perhaps too much mental and physical demand and stimulation...however reading up on biology and how energy works at a cellular level (so interesting I just soak it up) I feel I have a new understanding that will enable me to do more than ever before and better manage things without as much effort and minimal risk to health or sanity..I don't like going to the doctor to be honest as he usually tells me things that interrupt my plans..but all is good...I feel lazy today which is always a good sign..that means I am thinking I find and being cunning to get more with less effort...a bit of thinking can save much physical effort...I had a glimmer of how the sort this mount to pier thing so I will make a cuppa grab the sketch pad and come up with something brilliant thereby justifying a lazy day.

Came up with a design that I am happy with so I made up heaps of good clay with saw dust which took ages as there were small rocks in the clay which I needed to remove... and after started building the mold...I think I can do it but sometimes I can get over confident...however I set up the forge and dug out a steel crucible with a handle , I dont like steel because of my sad experience of melting the bottom out of the other one I had...anyways I just need not to go overboard with the blower..I realised I have a petrol leaf blower at the main house which I should be able to use for the forge...

I filled the forge with just all the timber off cuts from various projects of late and topped it off with some cow manure that I had put on my mini garden...I have not decided if I will fire the mold before using it or not..if it is ruff I will so I can add material grind it etc...we shall see after it dries. I may fire the crucible I made and just keep it as an art object cause it looks cool ..melt some coloured glass over it would be nice.

Got the concrete and rocks to about floor level but I had to find a larger diameter tube...which happily I did...I bent the bolts so as to give the grip in the concrete and made up a template to position the bolts so I can finish off the pier with the bolts in place. All I need now is a drill bit a little larger than the bolts so I will pay a visit to the main house and see if I can find one...I suppose I could use a smaller drill and use a rat tail file to make the holes large enough...

It was a clear night last night but I did not have it in me to take photos so I sat on the little deck off the observatory with my binos and enjoyed visual for a long while...it is amazing what you can see with binos..I used my 20 x 50mm which are perfect although eye relief is not flash.

Bolts in place with template and made hole to fill the rest of the pier with concrete tomorrow.
Mmmm the casting is going to have to be spot on....not the best way of going about things but I need to get it finished and out of the way...rounded up enough alluminium this afternoon so getting closer..plus I did have a weed blower...how to connect is next.

Failure on the attempt to cast a base plate..worse still I decided to use the part of the tripod into which the mount fits and just add alluminium to extend it and make a base plate..took a long time to melt the alluminium and the mold was find having made some green sand rather than go with straight clay however the heat of the pour distorted the part from the tripod and I can't see it will be any good...so I don't know what to do ...However lots of fun it is just a pity that I did not attempt to cool it right after the pour as it would have been fine...anyways the pier is complete at least.

So the genny stopped, pulled down the carb and is was dirty again but would not start and no compression...real bad sign, but I thought look at the plug..I pulled the plug cap and out came the lead with the spark plug firmly fixed in it????? Never had that one before..the plug looked ok so I put it back in and made sure it was tight expecting to feel a stripped thread but no all ok..three pulls and away it went...that was last evening..nothing it the batteries at all and a clear night so very happy I had enough to get me thru...and had just enough power to process this morning...here are some photos of the smelting episode...it looked so nice before the pour...the problem is the stuffed unit is rather large and I will need to buy a sauspan to remelt it... Going to have to make the mold out of wood for next pour...or just make the unit out of wood and give it a good layering of fiber glass..

I spent all day making another mold but this time using clay heavily impregnated with sawdust such that when hard you can form it with a file...tried to get everything perfect as I really want this to work without more attempts...my main problem is the failed casting which includes the distorted bit from the tripod is too large to fit in my crucible...I hope to just buy a large pot with a good handle ... I am out of cow manure so I will buy some charcoal...I fired that crucible I made and it looks like something historic and is super cool. Some aluminium melted down into the intake pipe so I hope I can get it out ..still if not the leaf blower from the top will still work.
I wish I had a path and a cylinder of alluminium as the design I ha e is very neat even if I give myself praise...hopefully I get it cast and all can see the simple way I have approached it..better than Starizonas product in my view.

Thanks JP I think more crazy would be the truth.
So pier is full of concrete and only needs sime cosmetic touch up.
This is the first mold, set up and the failure..it looked great when I openned it up but the bit from the tripod had melted such that it distorted making the hole off center.
I am still working on the next mold as I am trying real hard to make it work.

Report:
The leaf blower stopped as I tried to remelt all the alluminium I have to clean it up and test the large ppuring unit to see if it will hold together and work as designed...the spark plug is badly oiled up and I am soaking it in detergent in the unrealistic hope I can save it..I will then try some acetone ..but these days it seems when a plug is gone it is gone...anyways if I can save it I will clean up my alluminium later...maybe even do the main pour if I feel better.
The mold is finished ..the central parts (see photo white unit) are wood ..the rest clay although rather decent could not match the better precision achieved with the wood..will it burn..you bet but I hope not too much..the more it burns the more I will have to machine away...which reminds me I need to build a machine...mmm...at least start finding all the files on the place here...but there will be some stuff to tidy up for sure..I need to make a lathe.

To explain the photo.
The painted part is mainly clay save the circular sections in the center..the pegs.. four little ones are clay and for bolt holes...I have dowel but these were in place and not easy to replace...so I left them..dowel would have been better.
The concrete on the corners is to add strength to support the concrete item in the photo which is heavy and will go on top of the mainly clay unit..the concrete unit has a raised part where the molten alluminium will go and the idea is you stop pouring when the alluminium starts to come out of the smaller hole you should see on the concrete unit.
The concrete unit will sit on top of the clay unit but I plan to use a flour and water paste to provide a seal...so the process should smell like bread baking.
However if it all comes together I will be very happy..if not I will have on more try at casting but then make the unit out of resin and stainless steel pot scrubbers.
Now off to fix this damn genny and get some air conditioning..it was 100 f in the van yesterday which is real hard to take.

The pour went relatively well but using wood was not the best idea as after a lot of burning I think the clay would have produced a closer result...however with a little work I think I can make it work...hopefully.

Many thanks.

Today I had to go to Bunnings and buy a couple of new grinding bits as I wore out the ones I had..the new bits made it a lot easier so I tidied it up rather nice and gave it a coat of my special mix..black tile grout and resin, which filled a few holes and should make it look a little better...plus black is what you need right..maybe the pier is next..as I had some mix left over I used it to seal the top of the cement pier to minimise moisture that can come up.
The bad news..the bolt I thought would connect the mount to the new thingy ..pier cap..is too small so I need to go in again tomorrow ...I want to go to Sydney asap and sure would like to see the mount sitting on the pier before I go...down and back and it would be real nice to get back and actually use the new mount.
I still have to finish the foam fit out but all the materials are now on site and it is not a big job really..the main thing is just cleaning up the mess from building the pier and the fashioning of the pier cap...I wish I did not have to go to Sydney as two days driving will be a pain.

Maybe your are right Glen I don't really have to go if I don't want to these days...plus I don't know if I mentioned it I bought a big bag a grass seed for the park..I put a little out but I really wanted a couple of days of steady rain to give the seeds a chance..We have had a bit of rain and the new dam in filling so all good....but I will try hard to get this thing finished tomorrow...it has taken way more time than I allowed for..however when I look back over the past year I have got all bit done and it should not be much longer one would hope...I am glad I did not get the 16 inch but just so happy with this roll off...the little observatory is great and I will still use it but it will be nice having the desktop in the new spot and a desk for astronomy and a desk for microscopes...and a bench to work on scopes and mounts..it should all fit..
I must go for a drive around the new tracks.I had done when the trees were moved...I put in an escape road from the van ( in case of fire or you know who turning up) and a track on the property going to the main house so now after the rain I can try them.

So good not to have the dust from the clearing so I can appreciate the new sealed road..flash eh.

Hmmmm next need to bring down the water tank and get started on a shower block...plus reinstall the fire pumps and rebuild the jetty...it would be nice to get it all done before Xmas.

TvI cant believe it the bolt I went into town at 7am to purchase to connect the mount to my casting is about three centimetres too long...too early to think I guess...so I worked around it by cutting a ply disk that has become a large washer...actually works well...but in time I will install a bolt of correct size of course...but you could use the mount...if it was not raining etc.

One of the benefit from my racing days is you get an attitude to get to the starting line no matter what..

When putting the mold together it became apparent that it would be sensible to add the little peg which the azimuth controls reference later so I have yet to drill and tap a hole for it which I will do after I have satisfied myself that the mount is pointing South...so far it is level which is good ..there is plenty of adjustment in that department but it was so cool to find it was dead level when I put the mount on having kept an eye on how level the thing was during construction.
I did want to throw some seed around in the rain but I feel I can take the rest of the day off.
Alex
I am very happy with the design of the thing I made...I think it is a better approach than other stuff I have seen...in fact I may get some made to sell, create an astronomy business and offset income against expenditure.

Edit addition...the unit may look a little ruff but that is because I have sanded it before another coat of my magic mix...it works like car bog..dies not need a nice finish but I want to see how good I can get it.

The bolt here is M12..today I purchased the correct bolt and have fitted it..at the moment I am polar aligning the mount via my long exposure star trail method using my nikon...need to find CSP so I can fit the little post that sits between the azimuth knobs...it is pretty well there but I am going for as perfect as it can be and after a cuppa I will take the mount off again drill the hole, tap it and fit the post so hopefully I can go to bed with it all behind me..it's pretty clear here but with the Moon and moisture I am not going to get the mount running..besides my lap top is not with me..if it was I think I would have to photograph something.

So happy that the casting has worked out so well and that the pier is finished...

Unbelievable what a little waiting can do... The damn foam that I could not find a suitable glue...well I don't need any glue now for the ceiling foam as I turned it lengthways and by sliding it in from the very ends of the roof I don't need glue...I did find builders filler foam works perfect for glue and I bought three big tubes of it..but only put up 3 pieces that way..but I still have to glue the walls however ...and need about another 20 sheets..but its as good as done really..next trip to town if they have 20 sheets...still its the little things that keep you at it...I cant set up for 240 volt yet so I rounded up all my spare batteries...so after all my talk against 12 volt thats what is going at the moment...I am not going to rush the layout until I have done a photo run...need a separate desk for the microscopes.. yes..now two of them..someone I helped heard I was interested in getting a trinocular and camera and surprised me..doing favoirs for nothing pays rather well I find.

And basically the observatory is all working as at 30 minutes ago...decided to set up the 80mm whilst I align the mount and set up generally...put the diagonal and illuminated reticle in, check and ready for alignment and pec training, pole master needs a plug for the eq6..I will make something out of fibre glass...set up the Nickon on the 80 mm just to run things simple and leave the 115 mm and zwo alone in the other observatory ready to use if the sky clears..plus maybe a wider field around the spider with the 80 mm and Nikon..I want to do a few photos before I commit to permanent stuff.
Needless to say its very cloudy here.

Thanks Martin...the current set up is just to get things rolling..get perfect PA ..pec training etc. And when I decide on exact furniture and lay out...where the lap top or desk top will sit the hand controller will come back to the bedside table...I am convinced..in fact I did have that all working at one point but my life has been very complex for a couple of years and it's only now that there is light at the end of the tunnel....

I have to get another lap top and another zwo camera...still deciding if one shot colour or another narrow band set up...part of this is to keep me going that's why I keep biting off more than I can chew...been playing with the new microscope and it is excellent ..I am now set up where I can take photos but the little animals are moving too fast...
Hopefully I will get the eight inch set up soon but I think I will have to get a better focuser ..the standard one on the 115 mm would be perfect.

When I bought the mower I also purchased a trailer for it but it was only delivered yesterday. This unit will help me so much over my small gardener type wheel barrow for getting soil and rocks and moving the remains of a few trees the earth mover could not get to ... Well priced I thought.

So I picked up the garden shed that is to house the electrical system..of course the shed I wanted and built the pad to take was not in stock ..so I bought a smaller one which will still do the job and happy on the bright side that I will have a nice concrete " landing" upon which maybe I can put a pizza oven..who knows..
But putting this shed together was just so time consuming ... Over six hours so far and there is small stuff to finish like putting on the roof..admittedly I only had one good hand as I have damaged my left hand however even with two good hands it would still be tedious...what annoyed me was some parts required rivets and so not having one up here I had to make a special trip to Lismore to get one..which broke...hence why there is still stuff to do...
I need another shed for the mower but I think it will now only get a tarp...

Hopefully next week I will order all the batteries, inverter, fuzes etc... In retrospect I should have just used a genny ...and we are only at the start ..no doubt there will be more problems than I have not planned for...

Anyways I am getting plenty of sleep as there have been no nights worthy of opening the roof ...

So happy to finally have completed the goal of clearing the trees and setting up a little park, I feel safer having reduced the fire and snake risk.

Going to rest for a week as my right hand seems a bit sore as well.

Well I found that my neck was swollen to abnormal proportion and found it was cancer which took me away to hospital for the operation back 1st April and ever since I have been bed ridden in effect, sure I go out to the doctors, specialists, physio and very very regular blood tests but the shed you see in my last photo was blown over in a heap somewhat representing my dreams seemingly incapable of resurrection...anyways I embraced the change necessary in my life to get someone to help..and pay for their service..so I did and I can not thank the man enough because apart from tidying the inside of the van and cutting the overgrowth around it he has erected the fallen shed and with it my attitude. So now I am able to order the batteries and associated bits that will be the power system for the observatory. I probably mentioned that I was going to go for a 48vlt system using 8 solar panels that sit idel at the main house...that system required an outlay of $7000 approx and I have now opted for 500 amp hours, 12 volts and 2 new 370 watt solar panels... hopefully sufficient but I need room in my budget for a key start genny ( given I cant pull the skin off a thin custard) and unfortunately Bunnings dint have them st $750 these days and it seems I must go for a Honda at $3500 approx...It is almost a necessity as if I go back to the van while it is cold I need to run an electric heater and key start. I hope to buy and test a kero heater tomorrow if I can find something I like...I am thinking one for the observatory could be the difference between imagining and not doing a damn thing..a side effect of the meds is sensitivity to cold and given how cold the van and observatory get, zero is common, that would kill me I feel.
So hopefully the electrics are completed now that the shed is up...it represents a turning point for me ..a new start..all is good again.

This is mainly a note to myself to collect my thought as truely I am somewhat scattered.:P.

Everyone must be able to tell as I have been rambling on more than usual..if that is possible..

I am on some opiates and I think they are dulling my motivation...I find myself sitting and just staring into the distance... but I tried to stop them but the pain was rather noticeable so I have resigned myself to being a drug addict ..funny..I said to a mate that I did not want a long term drug adiction and he said rather cleverly...A long term drug problem is exactly what you need..the implication obviously being upon the long term aspect..who cares so long as I am alive long term was his point... .so its a trade off...

Well things have bogged down a great deal....maybe the rupturred gall bladder and kidney failure need to be factored in as well as staring into the distance.

..so everything is ready to be installed, what have I not covered??? got all the batteries finally... Rainbow Power Company delivered the last two right to the house..very good of them...had to have friend pick up the solar panels ( saw them for first time yesterday and they are twice as big as expected) inverter, regulator..cables, shed...hopefully we can get started soon...but it is only now that I realise how sick I have been..I went down a little each day such that you dont notice until you cant eat a damn thing and find yourself being pushed around in a wheelchair semi conscious...yes I just thought I liked my eyes closed...you see you can be too positive and soldier on past where one should take oneself.

But today I hope to do a few things...at least drive myself to the observatory, get up the ramp by myself, put the wheel chair inside to make things easier...I dont need one really but they are so handy so I plan to use it rather than a normal desk chair.:Pb..

I have materials to make the dew cover for the scope, have the new lap top so need to place it, set up cables etc, ...I have tried out one camera on some trees but both need testing...also I hope I can climb onto the mower and mow around the van...it is so annoying these simple things are now major undertakings...have yet to buy the genny..just remembered.

There may be a EQ8 r on its way also...that will be fun ..I have two endless chains ready.

The main problem I can see is just imaging...the meds cause all sorts of problems, mind numbing fatigue and I get so very very damn cold at night..I feel cold at 18 degrees can you believe and thats funny when I used to image all night bare foot on icy ground only two years ago..it is debilitating..so it will be a big test..but I gotta try..do or die has a whole new meaning...the girls took my "observatory" bed up to the main house for me so I need another bed in the observatory..that way I can make things easier on myself.

There is a bed in the van but its a long way when you are a little useless.

Anyways I just hope I can stay out of hospital and get back on track.

The girls are going out today and leave soon ...so with them away and not on my case I should be able to get down there...they forgot to hide my car keys cause I hid them first;)

Well today we made some progress and most of the electrical stuff should be finished by the days end.

The solar panels are up and connected, the batteries are in place sitting on a small raised floor, the regulator connected, the invertor connected and everything fixed in place...not my usual connect the wires and secure it after approach, but happily I am not doing anything and just now came back to the main house because I need a nap..so getting very close to having everything the way I want it...
I took the old electrical board from "the shack" that I was going to live in ... It was very handy to mount stuff and the batteries fit under out of the way.

I will add a genny and some shelves for a few things but the main stuff is all there. I do need to add an Earth Stake which I have purchased, to Earth the inverter 240 vlt out put and later the genny...but it is a simple job.

So here are some more photos..I dont know yet what the switches are.. rather I don't know how they should be set or if I should turn them off at times when not there..I will find out when my installer returns after we get out of our current lock down.

I'm assuming your installer will label the switch gear on the electrical switchboard so you know what controls what, and what protects what ?

Yes I will Martin...I spoke to him earlier and mentioned it and he seemed surprised but will explain things at some later time.
That board looks a bit ordinary doesn't it..Certainly could do with some body filler and a decent paint job... I suppose I need to get over wanting things perfect...it is there and obviously is all working as the batteries are at 13-9 volts...inside the shed really needs to be white to match my dust coat and perhaps provide a slight insulation quality..but it will cheer it up.

Well I hope I can get going from here. I fear testing the camera, even though on the trees was ok, I just have a feeling it just cant work first time and I will need some 1 mm bit in the train.
It has been so long I really need to start over...must make a check list..the EQ8r hopefully is on its way which would be perfect timing ... AND I had better buy a single bed which I expect is going to be the most important thing in the mix...plus get the wheel chair in there.
Yes better make a list..I like lists.

Time will tell but there will be a genny in that shed and so sparse times will be covered.
This system was quiet cheap as I kept it under a certain amp (50 amps I think) limit that enabled cheaper regulator etc ... The next level saw a significant jump in outlay...I was going to go 48 vlt to use eight solar panels I had laying around with a storage of a killowatt ???( 1000 amp hours at 12 vlts is the way I need to think of it) but that hit $8000 and as I said I did not need to buy solar panels...this little system cost only, from memory, around $2500 and so the saving of $5500 can see a nice key start Honda genny, say $4500... the genny I used to buy "full bore key start" no longer do key start unfortunately as $750 would buy one at Bunnings.
AND this system only powers the observatory as the van has a smaller system ...mainly just a camp fridge.

I like multiple systems mainly because I have lived off grid for so long that I tend to set up many systems.. say one for lights, one for tv, one for computer...because with one system a failure means everything grinds to a halt and being in the bush that situation can be a long time...Once I ran two systems just for lights but after getting into astronomy went back to candles cause I was happy in the dark with good night eyes.
Actually I just remembered I have two smaller systems that were running the scopes and mounts heaters etc so all up I will have 4 systems all up..

Well I spent a couple of hours at the observatory yesterday afternoon and drove the Earth stake as far into the ground as I could, sitting down using a sledge hammer, and connected the Earth wire ..plus generally tidying up and sorting stuff..AND came down again last night fitted a camera which at first did not respond..The power lead from the new shed was not carrying any power so I plugged the lead straight into the inverter by passing the power outlet board... So after some mucking around had the camera working..However fun when I rolled off the roof..it caught on the end of the shed and there was a moment where it seemed like the end of the shed would collapse..it was getting caught on something but sprung free and opened..I had asked my assistant to trim a protrusion but he bent it and that was what caught up...we will fix it after lock down.
Having tested the camera on some trees I hoped it would work but no ... I needed to adjust spacing but by then it was 11pm and I had had it.. remember this was my first effort past going to doctor appointments...so slow but I managed...also the EQ6r has a slipping clutch which wont go away by tightening..feels like oil on the bits???
Anyways I managed to close the roof, cover everything and called it a night...no photos and they are a long way off..the EQ6r may be taxed with the RASA 11 inch but no worries there is a EQ8r in transit..it is finally on its way...
Will try and sort the spacing today but I have a feeling I will need another bit...anyways a monumental effort and I am very happy that I lasted so long.
It will be interesting to see if I can walk today as my legs are really sore from all the new effort.

Invested more time today.
It took ages to get a photo as I had back focus completly wrong.
AND while working had the car " media" player going but I forgot I had turned the lights on full days ago.. yes I drive with my lights on in daylight...and the car battery went flat so after and exhausting effort an absolutely beat I had to round up an extension lead, battery charger and hope for the best ..by the time I got back to the main house I could hardley walk...but progress.

Alex,
Once you have your EQ8-R mount set up and done some imaging runs , I’d really like your honest opinion of the mount.
I’m still considering some time next year to upgrade the EQ6-R to EQ8-R in the Nexdome down south.
From what I’ve read you will be only doing unguided shorts subs ( 10 sec to 60 sec ) but that ok , just your opinions on the mount in general
I assume your EQ8R is the entry model not the Rh version and you are pier mounting it , not tripod mount ?

More than happy to give my view on the mount..well on anything at all really;)

If you order now it will be May before it arrives so I was told.

Yes the cheap one.. retail $8000 with tripod.

At first it will go in one corner on a tripod..
After that various options..stay with the tripod, put the EQ 8 on the pier that currently has the EQ6 and set up the EQ 6 on its tripod in the corner or cut open the floor and instal another pier...

I nearly went for the $12,000 one (if it was in the shop for sure no question...I think if you got a Celestron 11 inch galaxy hunter long FL you really want as good as possible...but I cant wait around...time is not necessarily on my side... If I were you I would go for the ,$12,000 one as from all I have read I can not see it not being somewhat exceptional...and after $12,000 your next stop could be $25,000 ... AND Martin dont worry about spending it ... One does not live forever ..as in my signature..you gotta go for it..Anyways order now if you can with only a small deposit..ask around what min deposit and expected arrival...nine months that is only x a week...

So the girls just got in..the genny for the observatory will have a home at the house...I miss out..but the solar panels and batteries are so good I cant see needing one..So they call at the genny shop and ask questions..told it will be 4 months before they get any stock..damn..damn..damn..But hold on he says we ordered three gennys for the council and they are too small..hang on I will bring one out...you would not believe it but it was the exact one we had decided upon..13 lt tank and four year warranty..so she put on a deposit..why didn't you buy it..she said... I had spent so much money I didn't think the card would take it...but it would have ...so its all happening... pick it up this week I hope... plus I found an auxiliary 11 lt tank on the net ..I may buy two and make genny filling less of a pain.

Happy happy happy.
Today the EQ 8 arrived at the Rural Agents at Tabulam and because they were getting too much stuff the driver rang me as it was being unloaded asking if I could get it immediately...so I rang my neighbour who just happened to be going into Tabulam to pick up his mail, so yet again the Universe lines up to help little old me...And if it had not been raining he would have been working and unavailable...I did need to buy a tarp at the Rural Agents to cover the load, which was good because I needed one at the van..perfect outcome.
The boxes are now in the observatory but unfortunately I cant unpack until tomorrow.
AND thinking more about the genny I realised that I need a key start genny at the Observatory otherwise I would not have airconditioning in Summer...so my carer rang the shop and fortunately although another one had been sold since she placed the deposit there was one left...so she went in immediately and just now came home with the two of them..damn heavy but I have mine now in my car ...So the progress in only two days has been wonderful...

Yes Martin you are as always correct..I have downloaded and printed the manual and read the assembly section twice now...but patience will be the key as it is will be in all things..going down after lunch and unpack and gaze in wonder..actually this rain may prevent that as the track seemed boggy even before the last rain..plus it is coming down rather heavy now...unusual that it is boggy I guess more rain has fallen that I think has fallen... but I dont want to bog my car down there again...mmm really need some blue metal over that track... I know, silly me, I could take the 4wd I got as a bush basher and see if I can manage manual...if so I can finally get to see all of this place thats why I got it but never used it...

Started setting up the mount..it took me from 9 am until 11 am just to free the tripod from many many metres of bubble wrap...nothing for anyone even half fit but it nearly killed me...however it appears that it will fit in the corner I had in mind for it and the HEQ 5 will fit in the other corner, all in a line.
Most impressed with everything I have seen so far...very robust and with three counter weights each at 20 lbs I feel it should manage the RASA easily. I am thinking to add the 80 mm maybe as a guide scope or something to be able to do a visual peek..anyways first need to het the mount on the tripod..I did not try as I was beat and looking forward to lunch...my favorite today a small smoked trout and salad... Getting the new genny out of the car really should be left to someone stronger than me but I like the challenge of a difficult task so maybe after lunch I will do it...somehow.
The big problem is my feet are killing me..I can barely stand up...
Still I feel great compared to only a while back so I will just take my time and keep at it.
But it will be a big performance..I have ramps at the main house so I need to get them into the Xtrail somehow and take them to the observatory electrics shed..unload them return to get my Hyundai with the genny, see if the ramps will hold, then gradually lift the genny up and over the rear, I think I can do this by lifting the genny a little putting some wood under and then the other side until it is high enough to clear the lip...I write it here to rev myself up..it is doable but will take ages..and once i could have reached in picked the genny up carried it into the shed etc...its a 3 kva and it is much bigger and heavier than I expected...

So far I am very impressed. I knew little when I decided that I wanted, rather, needed one, ( the EQ6 could not cope with the RASA due to clutch slippage..although there seems more to the problem with the EQ6 than a heavy scope) but actually did my research after the mount arrived...all I knew was what it would carry and that was what sold me.

I have yet to see if this idea works but I hope to have the HEQ 5, the EQ6R and the EQ8R from corner to corner and maybe another EQ 6 in another corner..so I can have the RASA 11, the 115 mm, the 80mm and either the eight inch but probably just a wide field dslr set up...

Going to polar align the EQ8 very soon, maybe tonight if I can stand up ( my feet are racked with pain for some reason) as I want to make sure things are lined up before I have the RASA moved onto it.
But very happy to be making progress after months of being too sick to move or care.

Most thing are like an EQ6r.
Could not walk today so nothing got done unfortunately.
But everything (pier tripod and mount head are heavy) my assistant was able to lift the head but ot was way beyond me..I cant even unscrew my water bottles:D seriously I cant...well at least today laying in bed I re read the manuals . AND I made sure my DSLR was working and added a foot so it will mount direct to the mount..all in bed..I plan to line the pier/mount up by eye which is probably ok even now but then do a long exposure with the DSLR which will tell me with if I need to move the pier ..if it is ok or when it is in place I will put on the Polemaster and do my first alignment.. then move the RASA into place let things settle a couple of days and do another PA and set up the camera, cable, dew shield heater etc etc
Just hope Tuesday does not deliver crushing news..but if thats the way it is I will just need to step things up..as they say work contracts to fill the space it is allocated.

Mmm. Tuesday and the good news seems so long ago now...

The genny is now Earthed and connected to the battery charger..The air conditioner fortunately works which I was somewhat worried that it would but the better genny and beefy power cord sees it running ok plus the battery charger works while the air conditioner is running not that the batteries should need help on a day that requires that you run the air conditioner.

The jetty is complete and as I write this the fire pump is being set up four feet from the end so as not to get in the way of folk getting out of the boat or from a swim.. it is only a dam but a float around in the dingy a nice day with a icy glass of sustigen should be rather pleasant.

AND we moved the RASA onto the EQ8R and put the camera on and balanced it...I lined the mount up with the EQ6R in front of it as far as the CSP goes so hopefuly all I have to adjust is the dials on the mount and not move it..Later we will put the HEQ5 in its corner so I can polar align it when doing the EQ8R.

Not the place but to add to a perfect day...I received "you have a parcel at the Post Office" email which made me happy cause after ordering a heap of stuff and nothing turning up I really thought I had done my cash.. but at the counter I was handed four packages..another watch ( shows your blood pressure they claim), a wallet that scoundrels cant scan, a little pouch for my pocket watch and a Lord of the Rings engraved ring...but I have been duded because I put it on and my daughter can still see me...but it has done its job as I was hanging to get a ring and kept looking at expensive stuff so buying this cheap one gets rid of the ring wanties and tells me to order something a little smaller next time.

So far a great day with much progress... also my feet and hands are improving with each hour that passes and although still painful not as bad as the mind numbing pain I have endured for near two weeks.

So hopefully next eeek with see gear ready and me ready.

Well if one still wants more proof that I am the luckiest man on the planet here it is....all the mounts are ok...even the most recent exposed to water, EQ6R, had no water inside...one winch motor required intensive care but is now opperational.
The winch motors have been relocated as has their battery to provide clear floor space and more efficient pulling...
So no outlay other than labour which is more than reasonable and really borders on priceless.

My shipwright friend pointed out that we should clean the tracks as any improvement to assist reduction of the rolling resistance is energy well spent.
He constructed some very impressive scaffolding and with the ladder brought in by my other friend he got to work grinding the tracks... well he found that BHP had placed their brand in raised letters on the track and he ground them away...this answered a big question..why does the roof jump about when being winched..it was horrific and I thought it was due to the roof going this way and that..I had to use both hand controllers carefully ss you would get slack one side which you needed to take up..so although not tested as yet I believe this will improve the opening and closing...also the winch motors not only are now out of the way but have a better mechanical advantage than where I placed them originally.
They also fixed my air conditioner in the van which was a ruff job with cardboard and tape and no provision for the drain..all that is fixed.
The grass is cut ..everywhere..and things are looking good.

Well things are moving along very nicely.

The van has been relocated to get some shade and although today was not particularly hot ordinarily the van would heat up as mild as it was...however not in its new spot with the annex removed...and the really neat thing is when I stand looking out I look over the large park like area which feels real good before the annex spoilt the view.
I will need to still make a car port for the van and the car but also to set up guttering for a water supply...so still stuff to do I guess.

It is closer to the dam now and between the van and the dam it is overgrown but getting on top of that should see me end up with a nice little area where I can drag up my little boat..I bought oars so soon I will go for a float..cant go anywhere but to enjoy a float you really dont need to...

I now have everything I believe, scope, mount, filters, drawers, power ...I do need a 40 mtr 15 amp extention lead to get to the genny in the electrical shed..but that is it..at least until I put it all together...I hope I can..my feet and hands are blistering badly because of the medication but I stopped it a couple of days ago and already my hands I could use..I think...so the plan is to get everything set up and then resume the meds...it is a balancing act but I dont think I can do it any other way.

Soon I will move back into the van however at the moment it is a mess again cause of trying to find places for stuff to live.

OH a little humour..today I was working on the car port tightening ropes and fell over right on the ants nest ...I could not move for a while so just had to lay there but not one bite...they are really nice ants...finally I crawled to my car and was able to drag myself up by using the door handle...but it would have looked funny.

So after all this time I think I can say it is finished subject to adjustment and tidy ups...and a water supply..I did have one via the annex but it is no more..I do have a good tank so almost there.

Thanks to all who have followed my story.

By having this thread running it really helped me see my progress and helped keep me motivated under what I call rather difficult circumstances.

These ants are big and black. I always try not to step on them so maybe they treat me nice. I often put food out for them but have not given them names..well not all of them.

Last night I polar aligned the EQ8R and was happy to find I was very close such that I did not need to move the tripod . That would not be at all easy with the RASA on the mount and sixty pounds of counter weights..it seems one to many but I have yet to balance stuff...Sig.Octans was on screen when I looked thru Polemaster using Sharp cap..why Sharpcap? Because I thought I may need to do a long exposure to show trails and therefore the direction of Sig. Octans...I had to attach the camera using blue tack as there is no polar scope hole on the mount.

AND Martin the controls are much better than EQ6 very smooth.

I was able to test the repositioning of the winch motors ( expected to have better mechanical advantage..and they did) and the effect of grinding the tracks ( and painting them) to reduce rolling resistance...both made moving the roof much easier and much smoother...what I did not know but my Shipwright mate discovered was that raised BHP (letters) was on parts of the track so when the wheels hit caused that wheel to jam and the roof jump about somewhat...I think I have said all that before earlier or elsewhere...but I am dog tired..as this morning I worked around the place..filling the huge holes that the tractor left in the muddy soft soil, trying to cut up and dispose of the annex, lay out the 15 amp 40 mtr extention cord, and lay out some exceptionally heavy cable that I want to use on something..for the solar panels which now need to be a good distance away to get out of the shade..( these are the van ones not the observatory ones).the cable is heavy duty welders cable...I was given it by a house owner and she told me her late husband could connect that cable to his welder and weld even the rear gate..so no worries about voltage drop...

I worked rather hard, but slow, for probably three hours leaving me totally exhausted and unable to walk...

Tonight I am designing a set up to gather rain water off the roll off roof...because that is the only decent roof that can take a gutter..only one side will be enough... actually I could fill the tank with bought water..its only for cups of tea..I will use dam water for everything else.

I hoped to go down tonight and balance things and attach the camera and try a capture just using manual focus but as I said I cant really walk..well I can but the pain has me screaming with each step...probably better to rest and hope I am better tomorrow for blood test and doctors as I will have to take myself to town...not in the red car.
So the observatory is getting there still...the work seems never ending.

Alex,
You’ve done incredibly well considering some set backs and limitations
Yes, the EQ8-R needs a offset bracket or similar to hold a camera for Polemaster ( yet another accessory) I watched a YouTube of Trevor Jones ( Astrobackyard )who owns an EQ8-R and used a bracket
Won’t be too long now before your imaging , just need some consistent good weather. Sydney has been starved of clear nights for most of October and November to date, very frustrating
Well done , your almost there

I was going to get the correct unit, then I was going to make one then common sense took over and I realised it only has to been in place for a very short time to get it more or less close...and that was the main thrust as I did think I would be moving the tripod...and maybe by the time I get to image I will have bought or made a bracket or done away with polemaster entirely.

My shipwright friend was constantly saying that he would do things this way or that way, better maybe but given the huge to-do list I run things like blue tack move you forward.

Like instead of building the car port I have moved the van into shade and this morning covered the van with a huge tarp to stop any leaks..that tarp will last a year..I hope I am around to fit the new one..but today with rain promising to drop any second I dont want to be depending on a prefab car port delivery in March.

And that 400 mtrs of Telecom rope sure came in handy...

So much still to do so quiet a few things will get the blue tack approach...its great for so many things...I discovered coloured blue tack..but I have miss placed it..but that opens up possibilities ...cables..camera cable gets blue..heater red.. temporary things.. I like to run stuff temporary before I comit to permanent...and remember my whole existence is temporary so making something to last a couple of decades is stupid and pointless and time wasting.

If you have not noticed I have not been here for a while ..I received a minor infraction but that was not the reason for not being here..moving the van resulted in no reception and so I organised my time to work rather than spend it on the internet.
I have been working very hard usually starting a seven am ..sometimes stopping at lunch time other days if I am doing ok continue until dark.

Although I put in the time the jobs are mostly small but include...painting all the inside of the van..inside cupboards and drawers to make it bright and well illuminated ( which made a vast improvement as it is bright and cheerful now) , created two work benches over the bench seats so I now have a large dedicated food preparation area where as before it was typical caravan space of two feet..not acceptable so I changed it and it now works brilliantly. The other bench desk is big enough to house my desk top computer and both microscopes and my printer..very practical and functional.

The areas under I have placed those plastic storage containers so I have plenty of space..my camper fridge also has a convenient position in the van.
Last week I purchased another camper fridge/freezer which I have placed in the observatory to take advantage of the abundant power there.( Van and observatory have independent system..the observatory having the best system). I was going to replace the old "van" fridge with a normal fridge but the old fridge makes a perfect pantry as mice, rats and ants can not get in..or snakes ...the set up just works so well.
I put in a new gas stove and it is wonderful and its oven actually is usable... I have my cigar box guitar and my electric guitar along with my guitar amp in one cupboard such that the amp stays there when I play..works great.

Simple but I dont know how I went without I built a ramp and a hand rail..before I added the rail it would look as if I was walking a tight rope with my arms outstretched going up or down without a stick...with crook legs and sore feet my balance is very poor...although I now mostly just use a walking stick and mainly using the walking frame to get to my cars..I get around the place on my ride on mower..it has a trailer so I can carry my tools, food, water and walking stick...so when I go from the van to the observatory I detour and cut some grass..and happily I have the grass under control.

I set up the large water tank with all the necessary plumbing (pipes from gutter, tarp, to two stroke pump, to van etc) and have a stationary gutter system to collect water off the slide off roof on the observatory..very clever even if I say that of my own design..also I set out a large tarpolin on higher ground to catch rain water and drain it to the large storage tank...again rather clever how that works and how I collect the water thru a 19 mm pipe with no skin fitting....little things that would take days to set up and make work..nothing to an observer but most satisfying to me getting around these challenges with limited resources in man power.

I rebuilt a drowned two stroke water pump to get water to the van from the big storage tank as they are some distance apart...that was just so satisfying..I had to chisle crud out of the float bowl, the tank was near unsavable...put it together pull it down over and over until finally it sort of ran then that gave me hope to persist ..now it runs perfectly...U should have just bought a new one but the challenge appealed to me.
The water tank for the van is just a plastic garbage bin and it has a small 12 vlt pressure pump to get water to the sink and shortly to a camp gas shower. I have a 44 gal with a bilge pump for washing hands etc by the ramp so its rather flash.

I put up a hamock overlooking the dam and happily there is a cool gentle brease from the dam thru the trees..it is nice as you can see the dam over your feet.

I demolished both piers in the small observatory as I am going to now use that structure for something else...a work shop spot I expect...that is the latest project.

I finally managed to get my little boat in the dam but have yet to work out how I can get in and out of it.. but its set up with oats, pump etc...

I have only this week got to doing stuff in the big observatory ..because of the rain there was little point putting astronomy first.

However I have set up three mounts ..HEQ 5 with 80mm, 115mm on EQ6R and RASA on EQ8R I have cleared the spot for the other EQ6 and the eight inch which I will most likely use for visual..but they all fit comfortably ( subject to seeing how it all works in practice.
Yesterday I trialed each of the zwo 2600 on the 80mm and have everything ready to go for the 80mm either in narrow band or OSC...
I have yet to fit the electric focuser to the RASA and make sure the cameras have correct spacings.
The old EQ6 is on a desk ready for a pull down but the eight inch is still in the van..it will need heaps of attention..I cant remember a thing about it..but I plan it for visual...something to do during exposures..although if I can get the three scopes all capturing at the same time it will be busy...mmm I will need another lap top.
I purchased an excellent little trolly desk for a lap top but I really should get one more .maybe two more

My two cancers in my right lung have stopped growing and one has possibly shrunk by a mm....anyways I am not dead although the side effects of the meds makes death an option...the worst is the pain in the rear part of my feet..at times it could make you cry but fortunately does not effect my driving..on that note the red car (MX5) is just getting better and better as I learn its capabilities and my limits.

My blood pressure went crazy high but we are getting on top of that...

There is heaps more that I have done or purchased but I think I have covered most of it.

I hope everyone is doing well and staying safe..me up to jab three.

Hi Alex. Nice to hear from you and great to hear that you are doing ok. It seems you have been very busy and its admirable what you have been able to get done. I will have to shield your post from my wife. She would probably say if an old fellow fighting cancer (and winning) can get all that done what the hell have I been doing! Anyway, hope you start posting some images soon and welcome back. You have been missed.

Alex,
Great to hear about your activities and progress. All positive news including your health at the moment.
Sounds like the big observatory is ready to start imaging once this dreadful cloudy weather eventually leaves us all
I took your advice ( don’t put things off ) and will upgrade my rig in the NexDome on the South Coast by July. A new EQ8-R pro mount and a 10” f5 carbon fibre Newt.Maybe a 2600MM later in the year or early next year. The existing 2600MC is still serving me well.
Best always

To be honest Richard I look around me and wonder how I get so much done particularly as I recall the effort associated with each task..special thanks goes to my friend and assistant for just so much that when I was real crook was beyond me...particularly finishing the little electric shed and setting up the whole electric system professionally ( he is an electrical engineer) and he moved my van with his tractor to the new shaded spot near the dam..that would have been hard for me with just my Xtrail...the list he took care of is huge...but my secret is keeping a book that lists the job, the time it will take, if it can be done at night or when its raining, the tools required and materials and cost. With this book I can sit down and say I have 45 minutes to spare..look for a 45 minute job, assemble the tools check I have the materials etc or add stuff to my shopping list...planning is the most important part of the job and by allocating a specific duration that it will take you make it happen in that time..so often jobs that should take a couple of hours blow out to take the whole day if you dont watch out...also if you reach a point where things get stopped because you find you dont have something have another job that you can move to right away rather than sit out the rest of the day doing nothing.
I have been running into time consuming holdups ( I bogged the white car up to the doors ..insane was like quick sand...and that took three days digging jacking winching and building a road out of the mess) and I lost 2 weeks because my blood pressure went thru the roof and I needed to rest...but in those times you can plan and assemble stuff for when you get moving again.
When you are old or in poor health your biggest problem is making excuses as to why you cant do it...you can ..it make take longer and you now need a crane and a trailer when once you just picked the thing up ... I love the challenge of just getting a fire pump or generator out of the car..I need a ramp, a pulley and a star picket in the ground to attach the hauling rope...to move sheets of form ply to my work bench I attach g clamps, attach rope then drag them there with the ride on mower..once you would just pick it up...accepting that things will be harder but not impossible it the key...
Anyways although there is still heaps to do I am back on track and indeed further ahead from where the cancer took all that time away...again I thank my friend for helping clean up the rat crap etc from the months of no one being there to take care of things..it was just so heart breaking to see everything ruined...but a couple of days of hard work from my friend (I was still very crook and was no help) and I could see I could start again.

I am having a rest this morning but going down to start setting up the RASA later...I might take the red car for a spin to the river and back...just to relax...but it is so nice to be able to talk to folk again..here..
Anyways while I have been resting I watched youtube vids on installing the electric focuser ... But I need to get going as time is finite and precious.

Pulled the cover off the RASA and found this huge green frog had made under there home..I put him outside and he looked ticked off...I am thinking he may be the same one I found when we moved the van.

I got the focuser fitted with a little trouble lining up the screws and twisting away with an allen key that came with it but it was too small..I thought it seems like a long thread but it wasn't turning..and putting it on so nothing rubs has things off centre... a little but
if perfect it would have metal on metal contact..havent run it yet as I ran out of time..need to cook my dinner..plus I want to check my work later so....

I may go down later to polar align the 80,mm set up and take some test shots to see if I have round stars... there is lots of cloud but it seems to clear I have noticed recently..not good enough for serious imaging as it may be clear but it is just too wet... but to test the things and do a polar align it could do...plus start organising things in general... but things are starting to look good.

Good idea with the job book Alex. Great way to organise and prioritize your time. I would do it too but fear it would fill too quickly (if the wife gets hold of it) and it would become encyclopedic in size :)
I like your attitude that things that are awkward or hard for you become instead a challenge. You are following your signature statement to the letter.

Hi Mike
The photos of work in progress are of the work in progress and show a very disorganised situation but I will put them up as I find them..I take heaps of photos so it will take some time...however here is me in the hamock and one from the hamock looking towards the dam which I have handy because I sent these to a friend r cently...and one of the bow.
I will see what else I can find.
Alex

Here are some taken during repainting.
Alex

Some more showing the food preparation bench and yhe computer / microscope bench in place but still being set up...the microscope has been moved to the other day nd and the second one added since these were taken and things tidied...these were just progress reports for my daughter I had not intended making them public.

I just noticed I thought you wanted a photo of the bow..but it was the boat..I dont have a photo but I will take one and put it here..it is just a tinnie..well not just a tinnie in so far it was a special build many years ago and a very robust unit..it is in a mess cause I cant get in it to clean it and it is half full of water which I only started pumping out earlier...I will get one with water and one without.
Alex

The first photo was showing her the new chair I had just assembled...the microscope is under its plastic cover if you look hard...and the food preparation bench is being used as a work bench here with multiple projects and stuff being sorted ..the fan for example was being adjusted to go in the observatory...its all neat and tidy now..the photo of the ramp was to show the hand rail I had put it but you can see the blue barrel which holds wash up water and acts as a wash stand..I use a gold pan as a hand basin..it has a bilge pump inside to supply water at the flick of a switch..very flash..the cheap car port was for the MX5 but the poor thing has been out in all this rain..but I found that it did not leak so it stays out....the car port is being used temporarily now for other things.

The photos dont tell the story really..like the work to put in each of those benches you would not believe...I had no one to help so when cutting them I had to build a special jig so they did not fall and damage themselves splitting at the last cut..then getting them from the work bench into the van was something ...lucky they fitted firdt go.

I wont waste time or energy feeling sad angry or envious ...well why should I as I really am the luckiest man on the planet... .the hamock is wonderful as happily there is always a gentle breeze that comes from the dam even on very hot days.

The bottom wrinkle across my neck is the scar from the thiroid cancer removal ...it looks as if my throat was cut..well I guess it was really..looks dramatic in real life.

Someone once said to me that I must be either a good fighter or a good talker because I did not have one scar on my face...I wonder what they would say now.

Nothing like hopping in/on after working cause you can swing and fan yourself with out a fan:)

OK I am taking a break and will take my meds and see how the blood pressure coped with a couple of hours doing light work.
So here are more photos...
1. A shot of part of the dam showing a little of the jetty and boat.
2. The boat after 39 minutes ( or more) of pumping.
3.The stationary gutter set up...not secured other than by ropes so as to be able to move after selecting the best spot.
4. The gutter drains into this tank as does a collection tarp..I took a photo of it with a wallaby eating grass alongside but it was a video so no photo unfortunately. You can see the two stroke pump I fixed that pumps to the bin in the next photo.
5. Here is a bin that I use to hold the vans water supply..it has a 12 vlt pressure pump to give me running water and has its own little battery now but I will be wirering it to the vans 12vlt supply in time...had to do it this way for a good reason at the time.
6.An other photo of the boat full of water and the jetty and dam.

Thank you Mike
It lacks elevation unfortunately but I did have the choice ... I was going to do all this on one of the hills but our hill tops get more lighting strikes than I find acceptable. ...lightning has already blown up the electrical system in the main house...well the inverter was all that had to be replaced...and given I was struck at the other place and found it most unpleasant I can accept less altitude...I was going to refurbish a very neat two storey shack on the highest point on the property that has electrics etc but the lightning just worried me too much.

It probably seems odd that I prefer living here rather than in my nice two storey house in a flash Sydney suburb but I love being alone and well out of town...I have a mate in it to look after the stuff so it is all ok.

I am so happy to see it all coming together with your enterprise ... Good on you for going for it ..from your biggest fan.

Yes and that is the way it should be.

As you know most people approach things on the basis of why it can not work..they havent got the money..or their wife would not approve...I think both you and I take the opposite approach looking for why it can be done.

The world gets out of the way of a man who knows where he is going.

Just to round off the photos, and this is a good idea which no one uses...and you may find it useful...if you need water just keep buying tarps... a distant shot of my tarp water collection unit...which having done its job might now become a temporary "shed".

The way you connect the 19mm pipe is my idea and as such very clever...I post a photo showing how easy it is...

Alex

Thinking about my comments I meant the lack of money or the wife's thoughts should not be used as an excuse...they are considerations certainly but for many are the Goto excuses when they should really confess that they are too lazy to make the effort.

I got it from Kings the 4wd folk ..I have purchased trail cameras, jump starters, a camp fridge freezer and can not recommend them too highly...and they throw in stuff...with the jump starters they threw in tyre deflators.. handy for folk into 4wd....and with the gas hot water service a canvass toiletries bag with a 12 month warranty...Honestly I dont know where else you could get a 12 mth warranty on a toiletries bag..I am impressed.

When set up this will be fantastic... pure luxury.

Sometimes I think astro photography is there to build your character by extending your patience beyond that of other humans.

Last night I started on the long road to pulling it all together.

I have three mounts and scopes in the observatory ( four actually but one is not standing so I wont count it at the moment) and rather than starting at the top in the hair pulling game on the RASA I thought to start small and build skills with doing the 80mm set up first..It has been more than 12 months and I have forgotten most everything ... Simple stuff like what this cable is for and where the cables attach to the roll off roof after the resort due to the storm damage..my goal last night was simple..polar align the 80mm sitting on the HEQ 5 mount...cant take more than 30 minutes;) then off to bed ..with the cloud imaging was not going to happen but even with the cloud this was the best night for ages..

Happily the roll off roof now opens smoothly thanks to my mate grinding the tracks and taking off the "BHP" humps... note..need fittings to hook cables onto..mmm yes I remember buying the bits but where are they now..ok later. So happy that it opens smoothly as before it was worrying the way it lurched side to side due to those little bumps.

I had the HEQ 5 mount pointing in the general direction but cause of cloud coming in and out off the sharpcap screen and the Moon light I just could not get a long time exposure to show those arcs that help me narrow in...in the end I used the live view blew up the image by 600 and looked at the stars, now very pixilated, in each corner...finally I could see the direction to move the mount and where I should find Octane:P

So now open Polemaster ... I could get the first part done but when I got to the second part the clouds gave me white out...so I would start over while waiting for them to clear and again got thru the first step but a white out preventing precision...
OK close enough will do at least that is something ..the mount does not have to be moved which was my concern...I can at least try each of the new cameras..the one shot colour zwo 2600 was to go on this rig so open sharp cap to play around...after trying a relatively short exposure I get a message saying the camera has disconnected..so I go through my usual routine..restart the computer..mmm no..try another cable..mmm no..ok lets try the mono camera..mm same problem...do a goggle..Cloudy Nights happyily has a thread..you need to power the camera as usb power is not enough..but I thought that was for the cooler and as I didnt not need the cooler I didnt add power besides which damn power box is it..I have a few a box full and reading amps near impossible in the available light..why cant they put that on in huge letters..I will as I am sick of going through the damn things with a magnifying glass..anyways adding power got things going... reasonable and at least I have the power sorted.

So lets take a snap something..no star alignment yet (no goto) or finder scope ( maybe I should have done that but no too much of a hurry) but it cant be too hard to frame up M42 just point the scope and watch it appear on screen...well it was not so easy cause I could not get it on screen... lets add a finder scope..now which one? This one ok but then the cloud played with me again...it must have taken an hour setting up the finder scope..unbelievable..

Seeing I have the mono camera with its filter drawer lets change the filters...damn it all the filter drawers except one are the wrong size...by now it was 1 am and all I had captured was 20 subs of 8 seconds using iv cut filter...but that will be helpful as I am using a new computer so I can go through the motions.. inspection, stack even run the image thru Startools and see what unexpected problems I find...I like to tidy up but last night I could not I was near colapse. I only pushed it because earlier I had a good blood pressure reading ..there are open boxes of cables, power boxes, finder scopes, cords, ropes bed sheets ..you name it...BUT it was fun..I felt so happy to be doing something..just playing around adjusting etc made me just so incredibly happy...and if I get a sharp image of M42 core to show a result from the new camera it will be great...oh I could not find my focuser mask cause it has been do long...ironically the thing I opened the observatory to do, namely do a polar align on the HEQ 5 mount, was not achieved but close enough in this case is a big deal as next time getting precision will only take minutes..the mount will not need to be moved..

I have so much to do I am near overwhelmed but I take the approach to just keep on keeping on and at least I am busy and interested in getting out of bed.

Alex

What I forgot to mention...

Before I even opened the observatory I went to start the genny..odd I seem to have left the choke on when it ran last..how could I do that ..how could I not notice???? oh well no matter..but now it wont start..mmm maybe the plug is now stuffed..yes it was sooty as.. but lucky last shop I had bought two new ones...
But getting at the damn thing set up so you need to take it to the dealer just to change a plug I feel.

Such things may not seem like a big deal until you have limited movement so you may not appreciate just what a pain it was changing that damn plug ...anyways that set the tone for the night and really I should have know right then that nothing was going to be easy.

Maybe today if I can recover I will unpack the new gas camp shower and get it set up but in truth I just feel like taking it easy today.

With a any new set up as you know, issues are part of the deal and yes it’s a pain in the butt. However once resolved you forget about them very quickly
In regard to the 2600MC and 2600MM they do require separate 12V power supplies. Relying on the USB just doesn’t cut it
I just made up my own 5m lead with 2 core 1mm black flex from Jaycar, 2.1 mm centre positive plug , cigarette plug and Powertech MP3575 12v to 230v power adapter. The camera has ran perfect and cooled for 18 months
Just address and tick each problem off and in no time you’ll be up and running
Wishing you clear skies up there at Tabby

Thank you Martin you are so helpful and an inspiration to everyone.

I wont let small things ( or big things) stand in my way.

Ordinarily I would have had the power supply available and I actually spent the early part of the day putting a plug on a 240 to 12 vlt power box to power the mount..I am trying to run everything from a 240 supply which actually comes initially from a 12 vlt system..my main reason is to avoid accidents via reverse polarity which, even though one is careful, do happen..it can be a devestating accident sometimes ..and if the electrical system fails, and they do, I can just turn the genny key and continue.

It seems only like last month, to me, that you got that "new" camera...and your images are most impressive..you probably dont need to go narrow band but it is just one of those things you need to do..playing with the 80mm last night I wondered why I went past it . so easy ro manage and great captures...I fear the RASA may not deliver ..I already suspect I will need new filters..anyways I will give it a decent run
But the manufacturer leaving off a cable management system given the camera placement for such a scope and to sell it with a manual focuser is unforgiveable in my view.

Anyways back to work.

Thanks again for your input I always greatly appreciate it very much.

OK got moving and have near set up the shower and I hit Bunnings at opening this morning to get the gas bottle and a small 7 amp battery that as small as it is will run the pump I expect..I have the same battery for the boat pump and it runs for hours and I dont expect to dpend hours in the shower...
I also purchased another garbage bin to hold water...in time I will do away with the garbage bins approach with a decent pressure pump that can bring water from the main storage tank...the things that become redundant with all my systems electrical or plumbing then serve as back up systems...when in the bush the more back ups the better as I hate having to drop everything and rsce off to town to getting something working...

Progress today...tidied up the observatory which means it now looks a mess;) but it is a challenge to make a place for everything ... But getting there.

However I did, on top of that, set up the gas camp shower.

A simple thing to do but surprisingly time consuming..I selected the tree that one end of the hamock is attached to and I expect that I should be able to shower laying in the hamock...that seems strange but oddly appealing.

I got everything in place, even the water storage, a lovely Bunnings garbage bin but my feet are playing up and the pain took me out before I could finish and fill the bin and do a test run...these feet are so demoralising as they totally stop me ..in my tracks...but it is up and the suffering was worth it:thumbsup:

Folk take having a shower for granted but unless I go to the main house I have to boil water on my little stove and sit on a chair with a cake of soap and a washer.. oddly you get a great wash..but a shower in a hamock will be hard to beat I bet:lol:

My foot pain is back unfortunately and rather debilitating but with all the talk of batteries and charging etc I realised I had forgotten to install the voltmeter my assistant had wired into the system to let me know the volts in the battery bank.

It was hanging by two wires ... Not ideal

So I found some masonite and set up to make the housing using the jig saw however I saw a facebook video this morning showing cutting a square hole with an angle grinder so I went that way. Lucky there was a square hole in the board that housed something in its pripr life but perfect for the voltmeter.

After some filing it finally fitted so I screwed it in...what there is no reading!!!???...what could it be???..something major?...no it turned out due to the constant handling both wires on the voltmeter had come off only after I had screwed it in..however whew...that could have been a message of something very very bad.. so I fixed it and screwed it back in place...looks great and I can tell at a glance if I need to start the genny..

Lucky I purchased a new inverter when I did .it has been sitting on my bench still in its box but I find the fan in the current inverter in the van has stopped .it still works but prolonged use poses a fire risk so it must get changed today.

I went to the main house for lunch and the wind picked up dramatically and when I get back to the van the tarp that I have covering it has been ripped down the middle so it must have been rather wild down here.
The annoying thing is the time it will take to tie down a new one...it is not an easy job for one person as you have to run around getting everything lined up..
I may just leave that one there and drag a new one over it..I can use the rain water gathering tarp...although best to leave it set up for its job.

So although slow the show moves forward.

Alex

So I figured that I needed to cover the van just in case of a leak so dismantled the rain catching tarp..I did not realise just how many ropes and tie downs but it takes a fair bit to tue it up to hold water for obvious reasons.
But the main problem was as I had not used it for s couple of weeks it had leaves and a fair few tad poles swimming around...so I had to catch them all and move them to a new home... I can not snuff out a little life as most folk must know.
So I dragged it to the van and got it up and tied down on four corners which is a bit slack as it needs more tie downs really but I was exhausted by this stage and hoped that it will do until tomorrow.

But I could not change the inverter...but as I was trying to recover sitting alongside the inverter I heard the fan start up.. do things were not as bad as I thought..I meant to turn it off anyways but I can't remember ...I had taken out the last steak and there were just vegies which will be ok..so I guess all you folk reading this must be very envious of the exciting life I lead.
And as promised here are photos of the way you can fix a pipe to a tarp..two pieces of wood which hold the tarp is place secured by some screws thru the timber...saves buying an expensive thru the skin fitting...sure it is not high but it is collecting and the water drains to another tank. ( Having trouble loading the photos..but I will try later)

The rain together with my foot pain returning has slowed progress however the rain forced me to do something about pumping out the little boat as it was close to sinking from all the rain yesterday 85 mm at least...and seeing it is such a big deal to get onto the jetty for me I thought I would use the opportunity to fix some grab handles to the jetty which may enable me to get out of the boat once in it and having tied it up so it can't move and so I removed the handles from my fridge as they are not needed and take up space and took them with my chair and drill and hex driver pump and battery in the trailer behind my ride on mower to the jetty and set up the pump and then got to work to instal the handles but then the sky openned up with insane heavy rain and not being able to move fast I got thougherly drenched gathering up the tools and battery etc and with this rain and my track deteriorating I decided to go up to the main house and stay with the girls so I changed into dry stuff grabbed a few things and threw some toiletries in my new toiletries bag with the 12 month guarantee and came up to the main house to avoid getting stuck at the van ..that rain was the last straw and I only just made it out without getting bogged again..then after dinner and not wanting to disturb the others I decided to brush my teeth..in the dark..unfortunately the tube I grabbed was not tooth paste but deep heat rub I did not notice and put it on my tooth brush and brushed away..man it stung and took ages to get rid of and now I can't stop spitting. ..but never brush your teeth with deep heat rub as it does not ease the pain but multiplys it....alex

Sorry about your mishap but I did have a chuckle
I wonder if Deep Heat would cure a tooth ache ??
It definitely would eliminate bad breath !!!
A great story to share around a camp fire with a few ports

So it stopped raining so after a while I thought to come down to the observatory..let some water runn off the track to pick a passageway.I made it in and plan leaving after I have given the batteries a charge.

I should make it out ...harder getting out than in... If not I will ride the mower back up..I would stay but all my meds are now at the house...

Happily the batteries held on and the new fridge full of food did not stop and my smoked trouts:) and lamb roasts are still frozen solid..

I half expected to have found stuffed batteries and ruined food..but no thank goodness.

I was very surprised to find 13.5 vlts in the batteries and I wonder just how much power comes on a rainy day from the panels ( 2 x 375 watts) ...the fridge must take 4 to 5 smps ...I will put in place something to find out exactly..it was on the fridge that I turned off in the van and with nothing on those batteries now show 14 vlts which is amazing.

I expected that the boat would have sunk and I think it did ...however except for a lucky turn of events..the water got so high that it floated to on top of the jetty and I presumed sunk there and as the water went down it tilted such that most of the water drained out I have left it there as it seems responsible enough to seek the high ground...totally consistent with my good luck.

There were a few spots of water in the observatory but I keep everything covered just in case...the more you prepare the more good luck you have.

So I am so very very happy.

With the continual rain I have not done very much other than set up three scopes each with their own cameras, power boxes etc so I don't have to "borrow" stuff to run any particular rig.

The fourth scope ( 8 inch Newtonian) has been pulled down as the mount needs attention..just a service really but it needs to be done and before I really start to put that set up together ( visual or live viewing via a big monitor) it is best to make sure the mount is perfect..it's an old EQ6 but an excellent mount due to me tweaking it for over a decade.

I mounted the RASA on a EQ 8 R via its tripod resting on the floor as putting in a pier for it will have to wait as it won't be easy and requires much thought and planning to do it after the building is in place.

Although early days I need to leave the observatory when taking photos as even coughing shows up with little worms ... surprising ..I mean I knew but to experience it first hand brings home how a solid floor is like a drum.

Taken care of lighting, put in a heater and a fan ordered another lap top table but it is mostly down to adjusting stuff..the 80mm is ok, as is the 115 mm butvthecRASA has a little way to go..then everything run and worked before cables get tied down etc.

The RASA is not a plug and play unit for someone who does not know what they are doing...I had to shorten an extension tube to reach focus ( thank goodness for the angle grinder, smooth file and two grades of fine sanding paper and a good gauge).

Needed a dew heater strip and now realise it needs a decent supply of power...so that needs to be sorted...the dew is terrible ..ordinarily I would not open up but I need to do star alignments, work out focusing, polar alignment ..generally trying to have things working for the future when the moisture is less..I hope.

I built a cable guide which took me all day but I have come up with a far superior design to what's out there and I am thinking to do it in "Blender" and have it printed but fortunately the thing I built seems to work well but my new design will be much better..

.I need to remove the dew shield to change a filter and I am considering putting a little door in the dew shield however it now comes off and goes back on with little fuss so I will hold of any action to think it thru...

There is no fitting on the RASA to attach a finder scope ( or guide scope more importantly) so I bolted a finder to a piece of scrape wood and taped the thing on...so ruff you could cry but it is doing the job whilst I wait for a bit to come from Bintel to make it decent.

I installed the electronic focuser but it did not work..I had ordered a second focuser for another scope and tried the controller that was for it ( the actual focuser is on back order) and happily the motor is ok but I have yet to refit it.

The focuser Mask so far has me beat..no pointy bits in the image??? So I blow up some stars and focus manually which so far is working well..to read stuff you could think manual focus is impossible with the RASA and yet I am doing it and there is not even the rubber cover knob on the focuser shaft...

The place is mainly a mess because I won't fix anything permanent until I can do a few nights...no matter how well you think things thru problems will still show up when actually doing real work...so lots of duct tape until the dust settles.

The tasks seem unending but it has more to do with the rain..firstly I don't like working there when it is racing and so far it rains most of the time..that is apart from my health issues which takes a lot of time away when things are not too good...I don't admit it but the reality is I am rather sick and have been bedridden most of the last year..so it gets in your way.

On the bright side, apart from getting sore swollen feet at the moment I feel not too bad.

The pain in the feet is demotivating but I just tell myself it is all in the mind and of course it is really...I am now taking morphine sulphate and it does not help in the least...but no pain from the cancer so that is wonderful.

AND last night for what ever reason could not find Octane star for polar align...having polar aligned a couple of months ago I thought now that things are near complete do another...so blue tacked the Pole master to the mount..that's right no where to put it on the EQ8 ( I relented and have ordered the fitting from Bintel as the blue tack is not entirely satisfactory..I know I am probably a little precious but I want to leave the camera on the mount and blue tack just can't be trusted in that roll...in the end I did a couple of time lapse and polar aligned that way and of course at that point Octane magically appeared..I just do not know what happened but it took ages to finally use the Pole master set up but having been careful I found I could get away with 2 minutes unguided and the only problem I feel now is balance..but I ran outta time..however as I plan doing subs under a minute until I get the guide scope sorted I am extremely happy..

I am re building a 70 mm Orion guide scope ..the objective literally fell out and it has sat in the drawer for years..I was going to take it back but after so long I thought fix it myself..I tested on the dslr and the lens is not too bad so I have ordered a helical focuser and will see how it goes for a wide field ..270 mm fl I think..but mainly for a viewing scope alongside the guide scope...not for full on visual but I do like to have something to have a peek..a check Sortta..

I have had to relocate the microscopes to the van because at the moment there is stuff everywhere...

Anyways that is a brief report...there is more but typing this has made me tired thinking of what I have done and all that still needs to be done.

The deep heat rub error reminds me of the time ( just after starting to stay at my late father's house ..now my city residence;) ) when I found what I thought was flour to add to the rissoles I was making but it turned out to be tiling grout. I often wonder just how they would have turned out...but apparently would have been poisonous..but you would think they would taste crook...mm but what if for some reason they were tasty...I could have died saying they were the tastiest rissoles ever.

It only seems like I do a lot because it is an account of weeks of work all at once ... the fact is I need to spend a lot of time in bed these days..

OK feet are doing their best to bring me down...as I always say there is always a bright side..so I have to lay in bed with my feet well elevated so I tried playing the guitar on my back with my eyes closed ..great for practice..for what ever reason guitarists are driven to look at their left hand and fret board...well I have broken that habit and for whatever reason my playing has improved.

Anyways my parcel came from Bintel.

Can't lay around so went with the top down and picked it up.

I pulled out the fitting to attach the Polemaster camera..but I forgot I had ordered it as I was hoping John had turned up a helical focuser..I looked at the Polemaster fitting and thought it had to be the worst helical focuser on the planet and turning it around did not move anything in or out...but when I seperated the parts the bevel thingy gave it away..hey this ain't a helical focuser...the other thing John sent me was a unit to fit my finder scope..needless to say something needed work with the angle grinder ( an absolute must have tool for every astrophotographer)....so after delicate adjustments it all came together..I enclose photos which is near as good as being there...

Edit..photos are not uploading so I will try later..much much later

Just looking around today and trying to determine what progress have I made since the last post...

Well the old EQ6 Is now really truely fixed and has a place but I removed the eight inch to do some work on it but the testing of the old mount shows it is like a fine wine aged to perfection..but remember I have pulled this mount down countless times trying to blue print it...I have actually polished the gear teeth with a tooth brush and tooth paste in an effort to make them better and real smooth..anyways this time I did not have to pull it all the way down and adjusted the gears externally...I was going to have the eight inch on it for visual but not so sure now.

Other things?

Well the biggest job since last posting is that I drilled 2 inch holes in the floor close to each mount ( although not near the old as 6 yet) enabling me to bring extention leads up from under the floor to a five place power point for each mount set up so things are rather neat now around each mount ( three of them have their own power for mount, camera, heaters and lap top power. It was a big job for me and at one point I managed to get stuck under the observatory but could not figure how to get out..I could not back out but finally realised just to crawl to the other side but my walking frame was on the side I came in so getting onto my feet was fun ..but I like being put to the test keeps me active...all these leads go back to the power shed and each lead has it's own power point...everything runs from the batteriesvia an inverter so everything around a mount is 240 volt running thru whatever to get back to 12 volt...240 makes it easier to get power around from here to there... but of late I run the genny while I am imaging because the weather has not given much Sunlight and my policy is not to run down the batteries..a few dollars regularly in petrol is still better than destroying $2k of batteries by being too thrifty.

I now have the eq5 carrying the 80 mm triplet with zwo OSC 2600 and it works well although perhaps could do with some attention in the back focus department.

It will run unguided and I have been doing some casual sessions..being so wet and misty I have yet to get serious with this scope and rig..or any of them really, ..just as well as I still have things to sort out...like the light pad for flats..no ideas for it yet.

The 115 mm with zwo 1600 mono and filter wheel ( 8 pos) is now working well on the eq6 on its permanent pier and I have done sessions where I run both the 115 mm and the 80mm...seems easy but like most things it is busy... I have yet to run auto guide on this set up because I took it off to run on the eq5 with the Nikon but for what ever reason the mount played up .. it is just a matter of putting it on it's bracket...I have an old asiair to fit at some point mainly to release a lap top.

The RASA now has the electric focuser working and zwo 2600 mono with fikter drawer but I am waiting on a guide camera for it..not that will stop me..also a new ring type dew heater coming..the RASA requires so much after market playing around it is tiresome....I have back focus sorted ( only took some work with my angle grinder) but that spacer is between the camera and the filter draw which must be changed but at ,least it works...but probably a relocation will be benificial pariculary at 2.2 fr....I have ordered a asiair plus for it but when it will arrive is a great unknown.... I relocated the solar panel that provide power to the 120 amp battery dedicated to the two winch motors thinking having the motors separate could be a good idea but one night they failed ..why not sure but I cut into their wires to add a charger that I can access from inside.
Better to find out now.

I took the wheel chair out but hope to put it back in when things settle a bit more..I now have two little lap top desks and two big desks one of which I hope to remove as things get tidied up more.

But although it feels like it's all done one finds days go on just little things..fixing cables for example...however I am rather happy with all that I have achieved so far and even though the imaging has been in wet conditions and made short every night by cloud I find it thourerly enjoyable just "mucking about"..

AND a tip folks..get yourself heat pads..usually at the chemist..they make all the difference stuck on your shirt and handy if you find you don't have a dew heater for a scope..I need many more dew heaters but the pads have saved me both on the Nikon and on the 80mm ..And I bet they will be used on the guide scope very soon..

Thanks for listening.

I have been mentioning things in other threads but thought to add updates here.

I hope I have not left much out...

The idea of standing the RASA and EQ8 on the floor was wishful thinking..my idea was to put it on the central pier but that would mean my alluminium hand made casting of the connection between the mount and the pier would be scraped..and looking at that casting reminds me of what a huge task it was for me and is a little reminder that if you work at something long enought good results follow...I am rather proud of it and so I cant not just scrap it...and if I move thecRASA there I would need to make another one just for the RASA...mmm which is a good reason to move it to the middle I guess..a second casting should be easy.

So I made three holes in the floor and built a concrete pad on the ground under pinned with star pickets driven into the ground and more star pickets (3 for each pier) inside the pipes that also become form work for the concrete... such that now the RASA and EQ8 via the tripod sit on a very solid foundation. (When I say I it was my assistant who became my hands...but supervising was the big part as although it seems simple you must measure measure measure and then measure again...interestingly When the RASA was back in place but on top of the piers the pa was only 37 minutes out on the horizontal and elevation was with in seconds...it pays to try and be perfect..happily these days I thought that was not too far off and rather than be disappointed I took pride that it was so close..but I just knew the elevation would be off because I only guessed the level on thectop of the front pier..but 37 seconds showed it was a decent guess...I suppose I could move thexrasaout of the way and sand it down to get it perfect...I guess I will have to I cant just leave such a glaring fault there and me knowing it is there...I think Ibshould sckip my sleep and get onto it right away.

A chap offered some 250 mm pvc pipe but I could not wait and so purchased some steel pipe 150 mm and filled them with concrete around three star pickets.. very strong and stable..I was not sure that the pvc 250 mm pipe would happen but on calling at the Rural Agent was given 2 mtrs of pvc pipe that the guy set aside for me....so I have decided to use that pipe to put in another 3 pier system to place my EQ 5 mount and 80mm refractor...it will be identical so I can change the EQ 8 and EQ 5 around...

So today I purchasered all the star pickets and most of the concrete to do this additional pier set up,.. my assistant may do it on Thursday but if not I will start when I finish sorting the winches...the new fittings are well on the way and if I had it in me I would have finished today but I really need to take it a bit easy as after all I am 75 ..it's not like I am only 65 is it..

I added an Asiair plus to the RASA set up and I am 110% impressed...I can now lay in the van and control everything...so impressed I have ordered another two Asiair plus units to go on the EQ6 with the 115 mm and on the EQ 5 with the 80 mm...I also ordered the final EAF so all three will be controlled via my phone...so on a good night there will be three flows of data...I am not sure about merging the data from all three into one image..I did get some software but it seems too clunky to be of practical use..anyways three different objects in a night is the way of it at least for now.

The changing of filters on the RASA is a real pain so I think I will just use it with the ZWO 2600 OSC ( not happy with this compromise but I do have a filter draw on the OSC and I may get one of those fancy filters if I can find something that handles the RASAs fast action.... and get a filter wheel to handles the 2 inch filters I bought for it and place them on the 115mm...that way I won't have to go into the observatory other than to get food from my second camper fridge which lives in there and pick up the USB sticks with data for processing in the van..the 80mm has the ZWO 1600 mono and eight place filter wheel waiting to go on after I fit the EAF.

So 2 Asiairs and one EAF are one the way.

Now the roof needs to be controlled from bed as well...so I am making a fitting that will enable two cables to go on the one winch..( need two fittings as there are two winches) when one is pulled in the other will go out..now this is proving difficult as I have spent two days and can see another two days before I get it to work however the pay off will be worth it as the current set has me relocating the cables and for me it is simply dangerous..I waddle around like a penguin and how I have not had a fall is testimony to my extreme good luck...I really need the new wheels in place to do useful testing...

AND...

I am waiting on new wheels that should be a huge improvement...if not I will need to add more wheels..but it is a terrible job as you need to Jack up up the roof so the runner will be off the track by at least five inches..I have yet to work out how to provide safety measures so the roof does not slide off...It is one of thosecthingscwhere you think itsxweightvwill hold it in place nn not me..I can already image trying to get something liked that back where it should be.....the new wheels may be here tomorrow..so I really need to start to work out the safest way to change the wheels..but I will drill inspection and or lubrication holes...and if I can change the set up so I can change wheels with out a huge jacking that is worth while..a chance to create a system to add more wheels...honestly the sound of dragging the roof at the moment is over the top .it it so loud .. it is like there are no wheels at all...anyways it will be made right...I asked the neighbour ages ago and they saidctgey do not notice..but they must..a clean mower going back and forth.. scull dragging the roof...

Further to control the roof I ordered an Arduino started kit..it's here but unwrapped.. so I can learn about how to set it up..I know at least I need relays and must write some code..it will be fun and great to stop me getting old .. I once dabbled in basic so I am prepared not to get frustrated or give up.

Also as I plan doing mega stacks in a Sortta lucky imaging approach I asked my daughter to build a decent desk top computer..which is complete and we are now adding softeware a second screen power box etc...powering it needs attention but that can come later..next week as I have enough for this week...I have had no time to play guitar and that is so important to keep the old brain working I believe..it's really just numbers at the bottom of what you do when improvising..feel comes into it but numbers are the rules.

I must take a break now as I have been now imaging more or less all night for three nights and I think it prudent to sleep more today as tonight holds promise...but what I do is set up to take say 1.5 hours and watch some sort of history video so I nod off dreaming I am part of history and set the alarm so I wake up before the mount decides to park...this is where the system needs refinement as I have to wake up to change a filter...so finally when it's is all set up I can open from bed program each Asiair set them running and go to sleep...OH..I just remembered I need a monitoring camera so to see what is going on in the observatory while I am in bed...

Anyways when this is all working I will be able to put more time into the microscopes as they are not getting used and I have so many little ideas I want to work with on the photography side...

Anyways sorry to be so brief and not showing step by step ..if any one has a specific question I of course will do my best to answer.

Changed the camera in the RASA to the OSC and although not tested I think back focus etc is ok.

Good stuff Alex.
All the code you will need is already written and available, I'll compile you a list of useful projects shortly.
There are a heap of simple Arduino learning projects. There should be a ton that come with the IDE from memory. Work with the "blink" sketch first, play with it to get the feel. Other examples will include relays & end-stops etc.
With a genuine intent to learn, the only stupid question is an un-asked question. ;)

You have
bread board & hook-up wires (used to easily make circuits - bit flakey sometimes coz of the friction connections. good for prototyping)
remote control & receiver, silver bag I think - cant tell. (not needed for now)
clear bag of LEDS and other LED matrix's (not needed)
clear bag of potentiometers and a buzzer (not needed)
resistors (useful for pull ups)
battery holder (not needed)

main board and USB - start with these
the board has an onboard LED that works wit the blink sketch.

Thank you very much John.

I will get to it as soon as possible...needing the wheels machined may be a blessing as it will slow things down a little...all this at a time where something else in my life is going crazy ...but it is fun to get up early and have ever minute of the day planned...today is all astronomy..another tri pier set up..but not sure if other projects can be addressed but if I can get that pier set up complete then all three scopes will have solid bases...one project complete can't be a bad thing...but the day I nail this double winch drum will be the best day of my life..so simple but so time consuming...

Hopefully a guy calls today to fix my 4 wheel drive as I have some projects that need it in the mix.

Thanks for your support in general but specifically with this Arduino thing as given I have no experience in this area having you on side will be the key to me making a success of it...I really am looking forward to learning in this area.

Anyways it's off to work now.

Hoy hoy hoy

My assistant came over yesterday to put in the second tri pier and bought with him his collection of Arduino and bits..sensors..something that ran music..all sorts of things to help me comprehend the game..he also had his lap top and showed me the programming aspect..he changed a flashing led light from one milsec to two milsec...very impressive.;).but I got to see a "scetch" ( Arduino jargon for a program I believe) but most exciting of all he looked at my box of bits that caused me grave disappointment and openned a little packet to show me that I did indeed have a board..in the kit the was a bread board ( an empty piece of material with holes that you add bits to create something ) which I thought was my Arduino in waiting...and he even connected it up to his lap top with the cable from my kit...so I have learnt stuff that I don't even realise I have learnt.

He is an electronics geek and is just so excited that I want to learn...and with him and you John I have a chance ...can you teach an old dog new tricks is on the line here..I hope you can.

Sorry mate, it's hard to know what you don't know until you know it :)

You need to load that blink sketch onto it yourself via your laptop.
Open the sketch in the IDE (arduino program).
Select your board type and com port from the tools menu.
The arrow button will compile the sketch (code) and upload it to the board. You can see if there was a problem in the log at the bottom.
Then play with the values and get a feel for the "setup" and "loop" concepts.
Then you can add an LED and resistor from your kit (you'll insta-kill the LED without a resistor). To calculate the resistor value: http://ledcalc.com/ you'll need about 270ohms (red-purple-brown+gold/silver) hook em up on the breadboard (push the legs of the LED and resistor into the holes of the breadboard paying attention to it's internal connections - use the hookup wires to connect that to an appropriate pins on the arduino) Be sure the LED is around the right way or it wont light up (wont hurt it though to be backwards) and configure the sketch to use the different pin.

NB there are so many important concepts I've glossed over or skipped completely for brevities sake so do yourself a favour and read through the docs above first.
