Something I stumbled across, an easy way to turn your screen red in Win10:

Might come in handy for some of us :astron:

Thanks for that. I’ve given it a go. Some tweaking to be done for my laptop I think but should work a treat!

I have been using a program for ages called f.lux which initially was intended to be one of those circadian rhythm preservers which cut the blue light at night but it also has a "Darkroom" mode now as well. must give it a proper test to make sure all programs respect it properly.

You can also use f.lux which is for reducing blue light, but also has a 'darkroom' mode making monochrome screen in hues of red only.

There is also this,

BackyardRED, its part of Backyard EOS, but runs as an independent program,
Very simple to use, and gives a sliding control to adjust the amount of red over the screen.
I use it a lot.

Thanks for the advice I didn’t know that about the red background on Win 10 although I must admit I never really needed to look for that feature
I use BYEOS classic version ( best darn capture software for DSLR users !!! ) and comes with a choice of background skins ( I use red )
Later this year I’m taking the plunge and upgrading to a OSC Camera and have test trialed the acquisition software APT ( Astrophotography Tool ) which also gives you a choice of background skin colour like red
My astro Laptop is a HP Omen 15” i7 32Gb ram and also gives you the option of keyboard backlit colour , mine of course is red
Even with all this red background on software programs and red back lit keyboards, my laptop when dimmed down to the lowest level still blasts out the lumens from my little AP outdoor workstation. Most times I have to rotate it away from the OTA to minimise light spill
Artificial light is such a menace even at dark and semi dark sites !!
Thanks again

I use Backyard RED which came with Backyard EOS but it's still too bright - this it's similar to what you guys are describing.
So this seems to work well on my 17" screen:

It's clear red plastic vinyl that can be cut up nicely.
Clear skies.

A customisable backlit keyboard is a cool feature...
BTW, just quickly going off topic, I've added some info to the thread about Stellarium and Ascom sync you might find helpful Martin.
cheers.

I reckon the cool thing about the original post was the high contrast theme he created (in the linked notes). So if you used BYEOS Red, some rubylith (my usual go to at a dark site), or the night mode settings you’d have a more readable screen. F.Lux darkroom is bit different as it seems to create a red light mode with a high contrast (inverted?) theme. Just need to see which option annoys others the most when out in the field :-)
