Firewire PCMCIA power adapter info needed.

Ok techi gurus, heres a hairy one for you.

I have a PCMCIA firewire cardbus that I would like to use with a power adapter. Unfortunately there is no brand name on the box and no details as to what voltage, amps etc to help work out which one to get. I would ring the Jaycar office where I bought it from but unfortunately they are not open on the weekends. Either Saturday or Sunday. :eyepop: Yes I know that is a bit bizzare, especially when they are in Maroochydore, the local shopping meca.

Anyway...here's a picture for someone to ID.


I have another firewire card with an adapter. The adapter for that is Output 12V and 1 amp. I don't like using that particular cardbus as it gets VERY hot. The adapter is the correctly rated one as specified on the back of that box. Would that adapter be suitable for the cardbus in the picture?

I'd say it's the same 12v 1amp type but you must check it's the same polarity, unless it's AC (but I doubt it).

Do you know the catalogue # on the Jaycar one Paul?

No it only says PCM1394 above the price.

It's got me buggered why a manufacturer would put a power adapter port in the card yet not include the type of adapter needed on the box somewhere. Sheesh.

I wonder if the power adapter is device dependent and not cardbus dependent? By that I mean that if I am using a camera that requires 12V @ 1.66amp then that is the adapter I get. :shrug:

Firewire devices will accept anything between 9v and 30v. The plugpack would not be used for the card itself, just for the power wires in the external cable to power the external camera.

Hi Paul

I have x2 Firewire PCMCIA cards and a Belkin Firewire Hub.

One card was purchased card only.
The 2nd card was purchased bundled with a 12V 1.0A mains adapter.
The Belkin Hub came with a mains adapter, 2V 1.66A.

Both cards work with either the 12V 1.0A, or 12V 1.6A mains adapter and the mains adapter's are marked centre positive.

Like you, my cards get quite hot when in use.

BTW Dennis, I think I've worked out what my connectivity problem was (after many emails back and forward to Stefan installing new drivers and firewire management programs and heaps of head scratching :rolleyes: ), an intermittently crook cable by the looks of it. :mad2:
