Ed Byers passed away 27/12/19. Ed was one of the true master craftsmen of the pre-digital generation - known for his exquisite drives and superbly engineered mounts for those lucky few who could afford them.

Couldn't have put it better myself!
His Byer's drives were quality personified!
He'll be sadly missed by many.

Indeed, he was the Roland Christien of telescope drives. Back in the day, everyone wanted a Byers drive :) A good friend of mine even detoured to meet him in the late 80's while on a US tour and had great stories of touring his facility and marvelling at some truly sexy gear wheels he had all over the place. Ed was a bit of a celebrity in the amateur telescope making fraternity and his drive gears were unanimously considered the very best available RIP :)
