Hi there, i have hit one of those brick walls again, I have finally managed a half decent video of jupiter, but when I try registax or autostakkert the file is not recognised,so what format does it need to be?
Please, i have a nikon D7200 and windows 10

I don't have an answer because you have not supplied enough information such as file format you are recording in, I am Nikon, and have No problems.

Is the extension .MOV ( Apple Quicktime)

You need to supply all the information in a question.

Try opening with VirtualDub. See http://www.virtualdub.org/

If file opens then export to AVI using VirtualDub.

Does the file open by double clicking in Windows? If not you may need a codec from Microsoft for your Nikon Camera. Just search Microsoft camera codec. See https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/download/details.aspx?id=26829

The above codec pack is from 2014 and supports up to Nikon D7100. May work with yours. I used this codec pack on Windows 7 but I think Windows 10 includes it as I have not had to install it under 10 for my old Pentax and Canon.

VirtualDub is a great program that does capture as well.

I actually got the video into registax and started processing, then when i got to stacking it got to 100% and said there was a access violation.
i ahve tried autostakkert and every video i try says invalid code divx

divx :( dont use that ever
get PIPP (free) put your source video into it and save it out to SER of BMP frames. they will load with AS! and should with registax. I've never known a camera to have divx codecs built in so stop doing whatever you are doing to the files from the camera.
Just use PIPP, no need for codecs garbage it just outputs compatible files on its own.
