Hi Guys just wondering do you or do you not install all the updates that Win 8.1 provides from time.

I find that the updates can and do sometimes play havoc on the desk top.

The desk top is running perfectly and at a great speed at present and i was considering stopping all future updates, what is your opinion on this please.

Leon

MS say they will continue to support Win8 though to 2023....
This infers the updates could be useful - security upgrades etc.

(Most of us have upgraded the Win 8 PC's to Win 10 while it was free.....)

I have a win7 desktop and turned off updates on that years ago because the updates kept stuffing up other programs, my win8 laptop had the updates turned of when I got it a couple of years ago and still functions like new, I think that there are some 300 odd critical updates pending on that one. If you don’t get hundreds of emails and stay away from dubious websites I think that the chances of getting hacked are pretty slim.

I run WIN 8 and have never updated it. I have it locked, no permission. All my astro software runs fine.

Many Thanks for that I think i might just do that.
Rick the most dubious sites i tend to visit are maybe IIS :lol: and not much more, send about two emails a year but other than that, just look up the odd web page here and there.

PS now that i think about it i am writing this on a laptop which runs XP pro and has not been updated, since they stopped updating XP and that was some time ago, and this machine is running well very well.
When I bought it many years ago it came with a massive Hard Drive of some 120 Gb,s  :)

Thanks Leon:thumbsup:

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't windows 8 in the same ilk as 10 in that you cant turn updates off, only delay them, unless of course you do not connect to the Internet.

Win8.1 was the last windows that lets you choose your updates or turn auto updates off.

I should probably add that I use a VPN so my actual computer internet address remains hidden from web sites which should make it harder for a potential hacker to find my computer. I think emails and attached links are still the weakest link, my daughter gets so many scam emails on her hotmail account.

No you don't have to update all the time as long as you don't mind compromising the security of your computer :)

Just a FWIW for those that run the "older" Windows OS's & want to remain "reasonably" safe with no un-necessary telemetry patches included.

Go to > https://www.askwoody.com/forums/topic/2000003-ongoing-list-of-group-b-monthly-updates-for-win7-and-8-1/
Scroll down for your WIN 8/8.1 stuff.

All these updates are SECURITY ONLY (for those in Group B...Security Only) & are safe to install.
PKCano keeps track of all the safe updates, as do a lot of the others.

You can/should also keep an eye on this page...

Stay safe.
