Hi All
As a new member I mentioned I was playing around with the planetarium program Stellarium. It is a free program being developed contiuously and has now reached a very usable stage. Version 8.2 is now available for Windows, Mac and Linux.
It is principally designed as a planetarium display and used in computer based planetariums but it has now reached the stage where it can control a telescope and give a view just like what can be seen through the eyepiece. One of its shortcomings was the lack of stars but that will all change in version 9 to be released soon. Version 9 will display 9 star catalogues (if you have enough room to store them). The first 5 contain 9 million + stars.
I have been compiling the development version under Linux and it is simply fabulous. It is the first planetarium program that I have found that will display the trapezium! The ability to add landscape for horizons adds to the realism and digital photos can be superimposed over the stars in their FOV to an accuracy of arcseconds. This effect can be simply awsome.
Another interesting facility is being able to view the solar system from any of the objects defined in the ssystem.ini file. Looking at Mars as viewed from its satellites is interesting.
Truly a great program.

Hi Barry
I use the Mac OS X version of 0.8.2, having been introduced to 0.7.1 by Perth Observatory. I find it is better than K-Stars that I used with KDE desktops in various Linux distros.
It is a great program, with plenty of commercial features, and the main astro package I use.

Hi Barry,
I use Stellarium version 0.8.0 and it is fantastic!!!!
Only problem I find with it is every time I use it, it slows my whole computer down (even after I close Stellarium).
When you zoom in, objects keep becoming more realistic!!!
Here is a screenshot of Orion at low zoom so people can see how realistic Stellarium looks on screen.

Hi Ken?
Version 0.8.0 had some bugs in it and it was quickly updated to 0.8.1 and then 0.8.2 which is the current version. The speed slow down of the computer is interesting. I have had it happen once or twice but I haven't chased it up because all comes good next time I load. It could be lack of memory. A minimum of 256MB is usually OK but the program likes 512 or more. The 3D video display with openGl also needs lots of memory.
I have been playing with version 0.9.0 which hasn't been released yet and since build 1786 (now up to 1824) it doesn't like computers with no openGL drivers. Version 0.9.0 source can be downloaded in Linux and compiled. This gave me a lot of trouble and I needed to patch the source code to bypass the latest development for openGl.. However it now works and the new star catalogues are fantastic. My biggest trouble with Linux is there are no openGl drivers for my video display. When the 0.9.0 version is finished development a Windows and Mac version will be available.
You showed a screen shot of Orion. With the 0.9.0 version and star5.dat catalogue you can zoom in on M42 and see the trapezium. Just like a telescope view.
Three of the things I like about the program are easy adding of your own astronomy pictures, Displaying a real horizon panorama and It drives my LX200. Have a look at one of the screeen shots on my web site showing Pleides setting through the trees. That is actually the same as what I saw through a pair of binocculars yet it is computer generated.

Will the new version allow the user to add comets?
I find the lack of this functionality to be annoying, although it is more than made up for by the graphics.
As an aside, does anyone know of any planetarium programs tthat would allow the display of proper motions over very long time frames?
Barrykgerdes
18-02-2007, 07:14 AM
I don't know if comets are to be introduced for on the next release but this function and adding minor planets is definitely coming. Technically it should be possible now by including orbital parameters in the ssystem.ini file but I am not sure of where to enter the supplied data. I tried once but my data was wrong and it put the object in the wrong place.
In regard to the proper motion , I tried this once, I think it was in TheSky and it worked. I think it should work for most programs that can display the sky over a very long period as the data required is already in the star catalogues.
A script could be written for stellarium to do just this but the current Windows release has a bug that stops the program at 2037. This is an interesting idea. When I get a chance I will write a script to do just this. If it works I will put it in the wiki.

Must say I only checked out Stellarium because of your recent mention of your involvement. Can you give an approximate release date for the 9.0 version Barry?
I can't wait to see the new release, the current one looks fantastic, and will be better still with expanded catalogues, and if the comet thing could get off the ground too.
Keep up the good work (to all involved)

Hi All
For those who have looked at and enjoyed the program there are some extra and improved textures that can be downloaded from the stellarium wiki and from my stellarium site www.geocities.co./wendygblyde . They are zipped files that can be added to the textures folder along with anamended nebula_textures.fab and ngc2000names.data files.
Just copy these over the existing files in their respective folders to give some more accurate size & positions of the existing textures and some additions (for the southern hemisphere).
There are also some extra landscapes in the wiki with instructions for their addition.

What a fantastic program Barry, I've really had some fun with it.
I downloaded it to my father in laws new computer and showed him how it works, he has now been out under the skies for two night in a row with his binoculars and peeking between the clouds.
Up to this point he had virtually no interest in astronomy but now want's to come over and look through my 12".

I've used a few programs like StarryNight, Red Shift, K-Stars and the like, but Stellarium is definitely the best astronomy package I've ever used.
The realism of Stellarium is what helps me locate new objects, I can't find using the charts out of magazines. With the help of Stellarium, I had no problem locating the M31 Andromeda Galaxy for the first time. The graphics are superb. I also love the zoom facility, showing photo images.
My only grumble is that I really need to get a bigger monitor, as my 17" Apple display doesn't do the program much justice.
Thanks again Barry

Hi
You have probably gathered that the program stellarium is my pet project at the moment.
If you can use Linux you can compile the latest development version which is being improved and expanded on a daily basis. Sorry there is no Windows version yet. I am working on that.
The display of comets and minor planets is now operational. All you need to do is add the orbital parameters in the ssystem.ini file. Addition of landscapes has now been made easier. The nebula textures file has been updated with arc second positioning and better textures giving seamless integration of the textures and jpeg textures can now be used. Telescope control works well with Meade and most Celestron or any telescope drive using compatable protocol. There are new language alternatives and the user manual has been updated.
The new user manual is still only available in source code. You will need to have Lyx 4. to compile it. However I can provide it in pdf form to anyone interested.

If you have the basic program
and plenty of memory try some of the larger star catalogues.
With 512MB you can install cataloges 4,5 and 6. This will give a very nice display of open clusters without resorting to nebula texture photos.
There are some nice landscapes available too. Use the mars landscape and set your home planet to Mars and see what the solar system looks like from Mars.
The next update will be even better! "Out of This World" you might say.

Hello everybody
I've just upgraded to the newer version of Stellarium & I think it's a great piece of work
Barry I've noticed that you use this with your LX200 & that they list it on their website, they don't however ,list the lx90 ,but they list "meade autostar"
do you or anybody know if this would work with my LX90(gps)
Thanks

18-06-2007, 07:43 AM
Hi Bryan
Stellarium will drive the LX90 which uses the 497 hand control with the LX200 settings. If you need to drive the 494 handbox as fitted to the ETX70 you need the special cable and need to alter the delay in the config.ini file from 50000 to 150000.
The full list of drivers and compatability is tabled in the stellaium wiki on the web site.

Hi All
I haven't posted on Stellarium for some time now so here is some later info.
Version 0.9.0 (the current version) was released in July and has some major changes to the star catalogues with 9 catalogues now available. The location of many files has changed along with some changes to the format of the ini files. Download the user manual for information.
Version 0.9.1 will be released soon but if you can compile it yourself in Linux or Windows the development source code is available from the svn. There is also a precompiled Windows version available if anyone wants to try it out. There are more changes to the files and the display programming has been changed. These changes that have been made will make compiling for Windows and Macs easier.
The program needs an openGL display card with the latest drivers and a minimum of 32 Mb of display memory otherwise it will be very slow or not work at all.

Hi
Compiling in Linux is quite easy. The procedure is described in the stellarium wiki. You need to install the dependancies first and then get the source code.
There is a step by step procedure at www.stellarium.org (http://www.stellarium.org) . All the instructions are placed in the terminal and at the moment the program needs to be run in a terminal because the start up needs to be told where the mainstelib is.
Remember the program will run slow if you don't have the opengl drivers for your video.
If you have problems get back to me and I will point you in the right direction.

Enter the solar system object in the find window, go to it and press Ctrl G. This should take you there. If you now add some sort of a barren landscape the effect is very good.
Incidently there are some data files included now that give you a choice of positions on Venus, Mars and the moon, refered to as cities where you can set your "spaceship" for viewing.

I get a jerky motion when i pan around with Stellarium, i am not certain, i didn' t think i noticed that before, maybe it's a graphics driver issue, i did a driver upgrade so maybe do a roll back and see, though i did see another vista user with core 2 processor report a jerky motion.

Barrykgerdes
22-01-2008, 07:29 AM
Hi Dennis
To get sound you need a script to run.
Here is a script "audio.sts"
image action load filename "audio1.png" name im01 alpha 1 scale 0.38 xpos -0.6 ypos -0.6
audio action play filename audio.wav output_rate 44000 volume 1
wait duration 3
audio action play filename audio.wav output_rate 44000 volume 1
wait duration 5
image action load filename "audio2.png" name im01 alpha 1 scale 0.38 xpos -0.6 ypos -0.6
audio action play filename audio.ogg output_rate 44000 volume 1
wait duration 10
Use a text editor to put the above script into the file audio.sts and place the file in the scripts folder.
Make sure SDL_mixer.dll and SDL.DLL are in your stellarium folder
Run Stellarium, press "m", scroll through to scripts, select the audio.sts script with the arrow keys them press "m"
You can use *.wav files and *.mid files, *.ogg files and probably others that I have not tried, adjust the "wait duratiion" for the length to run the sound in seconds.
As for the jerkiness what is the top RH reading for fps. If the reading is above 15fps your openGL driver is working. If it is below 4fps it is not working. You may need a driver. Vista is notorious for nil OEM drivers for openGL.
Barry

Dennis - if you run an ATI video card, go to the ATI website and download the Catalyst application. It manages the capabilities of Radeon cards and enables OpenGL under Vista for you. I needed to have it for Starry Night Download Edition - which, like Stellarium requires an operational OpenGL driver.

22-01-2008, 08:59 PM
Hello again, well i spent the day doing some trial and error, put xp back on and then tried Stellarium and i had the same jerky motion, exactly like Vista, so now i am thinking either the graphics card which is Nvidia 8600 gts, one of the newer ones and the frame rate is ok, openGL working, or more likely the Intel Quad core processor. Ive seen some issues with the odd software and multi core processors.
Maybe with the release of version 1.0 it will be gone, there are lots of multicore processors coming on the market, particularly Windows based PC'S.
After all that no big deal its still a great programme,my friend who is a big Starry Night fan recons Stellarium is better and so do i.

Does anyone know how to turn off the nebula and cluster photos in Stellarium, and go back to plain star fields like the rest of the sky? I find the integrated images rather unrealistic, and difficult to equate to what I see in the scope.

Hi Jason
The easiest way to turn the nebular textures off is to edit the [astro] section in the config.ini file and mark:
flag_bright_nebulae = false
flag_nebula_ngc = false
The nebula button will turn the other nebula circles on or off. Also adjusting the nebula names magnitude will reduce othe clutter on the screen.
If you find the nebula too bright you can also change their brightness with a graphics program. The brightness of the milky way can also be reduced in the config.ini file
Experiment with the settings in the config.ini file to set the display to your liking

Hi Barry,
That is the way they are by default, and changing them to true has no effect either.
I also tried changing:
flag_nebula_display_no_texture =false (default) to true, also with no effect.
And:
flag_nebula =true (default) to false, again with no effect.
The only thing that gets rid of the textures is to change the filename of each texture so the program can't find them. This would have to be done individually for each and every texture, which makes it tedious if you want to turn them on and off!
How about a check box in the configuration window to turn textures on and off in an upcoming version?
I absolutely love the program btw, use it all the time.
Cheers,
Jason.

24-01-2008, 10:13 AM
Hi Jason
That is strange. It works correctly for me. have you edited the correct copy of the config.ini file. Its location depends on your operating system but for Windows XP it is in the Documents and settings\your user name\stellarium. If you only change the Default_config.ini in the stellarium data folder it won't change the operational config.ini unless you erase the existing copy.
Get back to me with your results and we will try to find the cause.
In respect of the star clusters. If you load a minimum of catalogues up to 6 the program displays the clusters better without the textures. In this case to preserve the other data I have created a simple blank nebula 128x128 bytes black, blank.jpg. I then substitute this for the original texture. This gives a very good representation of textures like M44 and N4755 etc.

I did a clean install of 0.9.1 (previously had installed 0.9.1 over 0.9.0, over 0.8.2!).
I still can't change anything to do with textures. On/off, scaling etc. I am editing the correct config.ini (Documents and Settings/Jason/Application Data/Stellarium in XP Pro), as other changes I make, like flagging names, changing the grid, all work ok.

Hi Jason
Lets try something else. Which were the textures that you could not turn off. I will try to duplicate the conditions. My nebula_textures.fab file is more comprehensive than the distribution copy and I have modified the ngc2000.dat and the ngc2000names.dat files as well to allow search and display of IC's and and other non NGC objects. I also compiled my own source code so there may be some differences. I will install the distribution copy and see what happens.

hi Jason
I have had a look at some of those items and spoken to one of the developers. It appears that some of this is due to early code still in the program that will be fixed before the full version 1.0.0 is released. This could be some time yet. The next bug fix release will be 0.10.0.
I believe M1 and M42 should appear as they do when flag_bright_nebulae is false as this is supposed to be a level they would appear in a dark sky normally. The cut off level is set by their actual magnitude. However not all the nebulae have this data in the program core and are displayed only by the nebula_textures.fab so they are completely off when flag_bright_nebulae is false. M45 appears almost unchanged because it is that bright in a dark sky.
I agree that a dynamic key input should however be able to turn all the textures on or off and I have passed that info on.

Excellent, thanks Barry.
I do love the program, and as I said, use it every day.
One thing that would be great is the ability to import 2-Line elements for artificial satellites so those of us who are keen satellite spotters could use it for pass predictions.

Barrykgerdes
25-01-2008, 04:02 PM
Hi Jason
At the moment the only calculation for satellites is done by a comet orbit routine. This is accurate enough for comets and and minor planets etc but is not good enough for earth orbiting satellites. When someone writes a routine to use the TLE's for display in stellarium it should be great. In the mean time two or three of the users have written TLE conversion programs that extract all the comet elements useable data into a form that Stellarium can use for comets and minor planets but it is not suitable for near earth orbiters.
I wrote one in QBasic that uses the TLE data but it runs into the accuracy problem although it appears to work OK. Also if you want to catch a satellite with the telescope you need to update your TLE's regularly.
I have just compiled the latest SVN build #2807. There has been a change to the Time zone reference and the default is now GMT so you need to enter your time offset in the config.ini file. This method however may change before the next release.

Hello Barry
I just loved that multi image of Beaumont Hills you did, perfect really.
Is it hard to do ? i would like to give it a go at home here, i am afraid my computer knowledge is limited so i would need dummies instructions on how to attempt it.
Oh by the way the jerky panning view i was having in Vista is gone.
It was hardware related and not Stellarium or Vista.
Cheers

Hi Dennis
Making a panorama from your viewing location can be very satisfying particularly if you align it accurately on the horizon. You can watch stars on the horizon setting or rising through trees etc.
The essentials to make a panorama are a digital camera that can be stably mounted eg on a tripod. Take a series of about 15 pictures evenly spaced around the horizon (preferably on a grassy area so a good ground texture can be assembled). These pictures can be assembled in a panorama program, there are a few free ones out there.
Then using a good graphics program, The Gimp (free) or Photo Shop CS (expensive), carefully remove the sky (make an alpha layer) to give a transparent background. For good resolution the panorama should be about 10000 pixels wide and about 1000 pixels high. The panorama is cut into eight or ten equal sections. Each section is then re-processed to a square modula 2.
These textures are then put into a folder in the landscape folder and a landscape.ini file is generated with all the displaying details.
If you think this is too hard give me you pictures and I will make them into a landscape. Its quite easy once you have made the first one. I have made three or four for different people.

Hi Barry
Thank-you i probably will do that for the first time, what resolution should i take these images at, 2 mega pixels or higher ?
I was planning to set the camera up in the back yard where i would normally place my telescopes, and that way get a true representation of what i see in the sky at my location.
Is that the way to do it Barry ?
Cheers

Hi Dennis
2 Megapixels will be sufficient. The final practical size of the picture sections wiil be either 1024x1024 or 512x512 so 2 megapixels will give plenty of resolution to work with,
Yes placing the camera on a tripod at you normal viewing position is the way to go. Take lots of pictures I suggested 15 as mimumum but my landscape is made from sections of 44 pictures!.
If you have items in the foreground that stand out take more pictures as double images will appear in the preliminary panorama and one will need to be digitally erased. If you look at mine in the west there is a mast in the forground that needed to be totally removed and then re-inserted, also there were guy wires for the TV aerial to be removed.

My web site www.geocities.com/wendygblyde (http://www.geocities.com/wendygblyde) has been up dated with an edited suite of nebula textures. Most of the textures are the same but I have removed many of those no longer required. The main change is the improved the coords on a great many of them so that they overlay the stars of the much larger star catalogues.
