sharpness anomaly

I have a wide field image on my desktop; when I drag it into Irfanview it appears much sharper. Anyone got any idea why this should happen?

Usual reasons would be differences in image size or aspect ratio. Irfanview is showing it to your without any distortion or lossy rendering, which is what Windows often has to do to in order to fit you display preferences
