Can anyone recommend a fold up chair or stool to take to Lockstock?

Been using a chair from the dining room, apart from the legs sinking into the ground, its not going to fit into the car and the usual Big W camping chair is a bit low.

Thanks

Depends if you want to spend any money..

The StellarSeat is about the best i've used, but it's about $179.

If you've got a gas lift chair at home, they're ok. You just need to make sure you can get in close enough to the scope, and that it can go high enough when the dob is pointing up.

I've used an old gas lift chair at home, works a treat and easy to adjust.
Great on the old back too.

We agree with Mike

IMO The Stellar Seat is the best seat by far and is well worth the money spent,
We Have a 12" Dob and can view seated with the scope almost at zenith.
It also folds down neatly as well.

To see through my mounted binoculars, I use old office gas lift chairs with the backs and arms ripped off.

HOWEVER, to sit back comfortably and admire the sky (naked eye or hand-held binoculars) to the zenith, I picked up two chairs on special from Clark Rubber. Normally retailing at $49.95 I think - I got them for $39.95. Aluminium folding, having a high back right up to a padded head rest, designed for outdoors so it has a plastic webbing which is quite comfortable to sit on - probably get quite moist in the dew so throw a towel over it(?). But best is that it has five positions from sitting up looking at horizon to leaning back looking at the zenith. They just fit in the boot of my small car on top of all the other gear (gas lift chairs have to go on the back seat!)

Thanks for all that!

I have a gas lift chair and with the back off, it should fit in the car. Brilliant!

Thanks again

That's just what I do - invert them on the back seat - I've got two for me and my star-gazing partner (when present). I've left the wheels on - that will be fun when the wet and muddy conditions return again!

Another vote for the Stellar Seat Observing Chair. The best $177 I've spent. Made in Japan - nicely finished. Folds down flat. Good range of heights, plus comfy to sit back on. A great investment for my lower back.

I've got one of the stellar chairs too ... as mentioned they fold flat, carry well in a vehicle, etc. It replaces the 2 different chairs that I used to carry to get the range of heights that I needed for observing with my dob. One of those was a bar stool which obviously did NOT fold flat, so the space saving in travel in huge!

A word of warning though - these chairs are SO good that everyone else just can't help but want to sit on it. I bought mine last July at the Qld Astrofest, and even as I was carrying it (still in cardboard box) back to my scope & table setup the vultures (oops, I mean my good friends - you guys know who you are!) began circling ..... what's in the box, get it out, lets have a look, etc. I was in fact the 5th or 6th person to sit on my brand new chair.

I also use it for BBQ's - at home, and at other peoples places - by setting the seat relatively low and leaning back and relaxing against the "back rest". I find that if I get up and move other people will always try to adopt it to sit on. At one gathering recently a friend planted himself on it in great comfort and seemed quite reluctant to move when I returned until I smilingly suggested that unless he wants to reimburse me the near $200 I paid for it he can move his bum back to his own seat.

Yes, these chairs REALLY are that great ..... yes, be prepared to chase others off them .... and Yes! it's all worth it.
