Wireless router setup

Anyone know how to get these damn things to connect to the net? I have a linksys Wireless-G 4 port router (WRT54G) and cannot get the damn thing talking, I know it works as I have had it working before on my older computer, but I cannot rmemeber how I set it up or what settings I used. This thing is seriously pissing me off.

press the reset button, go to their web site and download manual for it and enter their admin code and password, then set it up from a lappy directly connected and change the parameters for the net and add security etc if there is the fire wall etc. then plug it into your modem and the rest is history, you should be able to access the wireless net side of things very well provided your setings have not changed. I have to do the same as I was off the air (still am, using cable at the moment). Off to get a new wireless modem myself.

Okay went to the website and printed off the ENGLISH manual then tried doing what it said but the website kept timing out. I am a little more annoyed with it now so I am going to leave it, before it ends up being the next piece of space junk.

The most important thing for the computer that connects to the Router is that you set up the address and DNS to "AUTO".
Do not put an address in it, as this causes the router not to talk to the computer.
Try that first before anything else.

By default, most routers are set to "Auto" as Gama stated. The ISP hands you a dynamic IP address and allocates a domain name server to you automatically as well - UNLESS you have specifically asked for a static IP address (like I have). All you typically need is to turn your computer on and it should pretty-well automagically find the wireless router as long as you have the 802.11 hardware installed and try to connect. If you can first talk to the router via ethernet and log on to the router admin module, all you should need to do is to set your given ADSL account's login name and password that your ISP gave you. Save the setting and see if it connects to the ISP via ADSL. If that is OK then disconnect your ethernet cable and try your wireless connection again.

The interesting thing is, the router goes through the setup okay, but when it tries to connect to the internet via the ADSL modem, it doesnt work. It keeps saying to turn on/off the modem and try again.

Andrew - did the router come already set up & pre-installed by your ISP, or do they want you to run some software scripts to set it up yourself? Do you have your login name and password? What brand of router is it?

You may need to put gateway, and or DNS settings in your router or your PC network setup. Sometimes DNS server IP's don't get correctly passed from the modem to the router and on to your PC. You can also set the modem to Bridged mode although it shouldn't be necessary, if you can see the modem via the router but can't browse the net it's most likely DNS settings that are the problem.

The router is a WRT54G by linksys and the modem is a D-Link DSL-302G if that helps

Have you set the following in the Router admin software?

Automatic configuration – DHCP.
Local IP Address: 192.168.1.1 (the manual states this is mandatory).
DHCP Server: Enable.

I am with Optus and they do not require either a "Domain Name" or "Host Name" so I made these up.

Hi Andrew,
I had a similar problem when I switched plans 512 to1500 broadband.
Even though all looked well(ADSL and PPP lights on) and procedure was followed modem would not connect. Drove me mad. Contacted ISP(TPG), went through their diagnostic protocol - turned out there was a fault on my line which the Telstra engineer fixed at his leisure!!!!!
Perhaps that's your problem too.

Could be, but I have another problem now, I cannot connect to any of my webservers via FTP, they just keep coming up saying they could not connect, might be a reason why I cannot get the router to work out? Any ideas?

without seeing the setup, i would hazard a guess that you have to give the wireless router an ip address in the same range as the modem and put in the address of the modem as the gateway

that is - if your modem uses 10.1.1.1 then make the router 10.1.1.12 (or whatever you like in that range) then in the gateway setting enter 10.1.1.1

the wireless router should handle dhcp for the rest of the network in say the 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 range ( or even the 10.0.0.1 range)

Also when you attach a router to a broadband modem that gives it an IP via DHCP, the broadband modem must be powered down for 10 seconds so its MAC address will be refreshed.

Every time a new network device is directly attached to control a broadband modem you have to reset the modem to re-validate the new MAC address of the new physical device, or alternatively tell the router to clone the old MAC address, but I believe its better power cycling the modem to improve line quality (at least every month, more often if there is alot of sunspot activity degrading line performance).

Okay time to bump this thread again.

I have managed to get the router to work, BUT, I cannot access the internet through the desktop computer, but I can connect to the internet via the laptop. This would be okay if I just used the laptop, but I also use the desktop and need the internet connection. Any ideas?

One other thing that may be associated with it or not is I can view the laptop s shared files and folders from the desktop but cannot access the desktop via the laptop.
