RAW to TIFF conversion

Hi all,
Any suggestions on how to convert pics from RAW to TIFF so that they will be able to be read in Registax or DeepSpaceStacker?
I've tried in PS and the bundled Pentax Laboratory software but the subsequent files won't be read in either program.
The RAWs come from a Pentax ist-D DSLR.

DSS crashes when trying to stack 10 RAW files, and I want to maintain the dynamic range in the pics I stack so converting a 32Mb RAW to a 4Mb jpeg is not ideal. But is that my only option for processing?

I have provided some raw images to Mike Unsold to develop RAW processing for the pentax within his software. however, you should be able to convert the imasges to tiff with the pentax software. please note that with the new K10D pentax now makes a standard RAW file. I have the *ist DS BTW.

i'm no camera expert but i do know that different camera mfg's have different RAW format encoding.

Thus one mfg's RAW format is not the same as another's and thus trying to convert when not using the camera proprietary software of mfg's format will not work.

Hi Doug, Seeing you have my camera now, I have sent you a PM of how to save in Tiff Format, I used to do it with my images.

The only hassel I found is that you cant batch process, you have to do one at a time.

I didn't phrase my question well on re-reading I'm afraid! Sorry!

I have batch converted RAWs to TIFFS (and JPEGs) with the Pentax Laboratory software many times and used TIFFs direct from the camera.
But, both of these TIFF files crash both Registax and DSS.

I had hoped to process TIFFs in Registax without compressing them to JPEG.

Has anyone experienced similar problems? Does anyone have a work-around?

Registax4 has produced some strange stacks!!!
DSS is working well with JPEGs from the RAW files.

Have you tried Deep Sky Stacker 3.3.3 beta?
It works with most RAW files.

Hi JJ, tried to download this Beta but it was a broken link. I find it unusual for a beta with single numerical digit, I always see 2. The latest on this website is on the front page of the user group (http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/DeepSkyStacker/).

Try Adobe Camera RAW http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4220 I am not sure if it converts to TIFF, but it converts to DNG - which can be opened by almost anything and then saved to TIFF. If not one step, then two-step conversion may work.

Hi guys and Girls. I have been processing widefield images with my 500d and cannon 50mm f1.8 prime i took last night of M42 and the SMC (incl 47 Tuc?) i think:question:. Upon stacking them in DSS ( 15 x 20 sec exp) & (15 x 20sec) darks, when stacked and finished and when opened in DPP, the RGB thresholds are all on the right hand side of the histogram. And when trying and move them to the left to make them image darker(because at the moment its really bright) the RGB thresholds dissapate and there is no colour in the image. I can reasonably use Bojans method of processing images in DPP and am slightly familiar with how it works and am able to process a single 8sec exposure to remove light pollution etc but with the results i am getting from DSS i can basically do nothing with them. I added all 15 dark frames, 15 light frames, followed all the normal procedures without going in adv settings in DSS. Has this happened to anyone and does anyone know where i am going wrong:(
