Finally got round to getting a backup HDD to copy my images. I bought a Lan Server by Ritmo (http://www.satotech.com.au/products_storage_3.5%20ext%20with%2 0network.htm) for less than $100 (plus of course the cost of a 320Gb Hdd). The device comes with both USB and 10/100 Lan ports, if the USB is connected it automatically disables the Lan port. Setup is simple to using a web interface (I was able to set everything up without using the manual after looking up the admin user and password details), the unit can have fixed IP, or get it's address from a DHCP server or act as a DHCP server itself. It also has a simple but effective FTP server inbuilt which works nicely once you get your router and server settings correct and can power the HDD down after a set time. Heat from the hard drive is transferred away by the side cover of the case which has adjustable screws to allow direct contact with the HDD case. The unit comes complete with switchmode PSU and Lan and USB cables. Only downside is that it only supports fat32 which isn't really a problem.
